As usual you do a wonderful job of bringing distro closer to the viewers. I had a great deal of trouble with Mandriva itself, wonder how this would be. I downloaded the CD version with an lxde DT as default. Its like Arch Linux you have to build everything from scratch. Then why Mageia?
I have to say, having installed it to my hard drive, boot up is really quick for me. <3 Probably even slightly faster than Ubuntu. Which is what this replaced for me. xD
@Mkbu: Well, have you visited Mageia's bugzilla or subscribing to mailinglist or even joining #mageia in leguin . freenode . net in IRC to ask about your issues?
When I first started with Linux a friend or mine told me that .DEB packages where better than .RPM packages since .RPM had a lot of dependency problems.. But to be honest I've had the same problems with .RPM than with .DEB. I was told that .RPM was modified to fix those problems. I even found Mageia to be very fast when installing.
I used both Mandriva (Well, I moved to Mageia) and Ubuntu and I am happy with both of them.
@JaimedotTorres@JaimedotTorres I have used very long back during its release of 10.04. But got really bored of Gnome and was wandering for something new, and found PCLOS, and PCLOS taught me what KDE is all about. But the trouble was they do not have a 64 bit version even in mid 2011. So pushed my limit for something alien and I found it and loving it in all sense and that Distro is called the great CHAKRA Project.
will you ever do a review of Arch Linux? i've had a dabble with it but i'd love to hear how it performs for someone who may be slightly better at installing it :)
@ZomZilla I did a review of Arch over a year ago, and have been using it as my primary system every since. :P I also did at least 3 install tutorial videos on it. Meant to do more, but things keep coming up. :)
Hate when these new derivative distros come out. You just gotta download 'em and have a play :) Long weekend here, so if I get a chance I'll run it up on a spare machine and try it out. Always enjoy your videos - fantastic stuff. Cheers!
@thisweekinlinux Yep, I've been testing Mandriva 2011 Beta 3 KDE and the panel, the behavior, the whole system feels like a new OS, not a Kde based distro, I believe they also implemented LightDM or something Like that for the login Screen and all the drakeconf tools are there but QT based instead of GTK
@Jmlevick I probably will take some time to take a look at it when it becomes a final release, just to show the differences and because i haven't touched Mandriva in a VERY long time. :)
@sesaruoosama I've been meaning to look at one of them for a while, but every time I start looking at them, I get frustrated because of the "only free software" policies.
@thisweekinlinux Yes, it sucks a bit and some things were not very well thought while building them. I was trying gnewsense in a live cd, after looking around i tried to connect to the internet; to my surprise it only accepted dial up and wireless connection, i haven't use dial up for years and i have proprietary wireless tools on my laptop and could not recognise my ethernet connection. i gave up after not knowing what to do. i was hoping that these weren't as bad as i thought.
speaking of purism, mandrake mandriva and mageia actually managed to use a theme for both gtk and qt apps so they look same ages ago, it is still same ugly as it was in mandrake, which is cool!
Just downloaded & tried out the live cd (downloaded the Europe1, Gnome version). I worked pretty good. No major hangups. Went online with it. Also checked out the Libre Office suite (a wing of openoffice). Looked pretty good. I give this os a thumbs up!
@VDRO I have to use Windows (until recently, XP, now 7) at work, and it's fine, I just don't prefer it. I've got OSX on my Macbook Pro, and I've grown to like it a bit, but I miss the customizability I used to get out of Linux distros (that's becoming more rare, with Unity and Gnome 3...)
The answer to your question: no, I wouldn't be interested in trying it out since I am not fond of KDE at all. But that's one of the great things about Linux: diversity. :-)
Doesn't look like a bad distro. It's obviously still a bit rough around the edges, but with time I'm sure it'll get better. I have no plans of personally using it, but I'm sure that down the road I will be able to recommend it to people using Mandriva.
@EpikEthan I would definitely enjoy that. To be honest, any sort of filmmaking or photography is starting to interest me at this point. I'm really enjoying using a nicer camera and editing the videos and photos. :)
@thisweekinlinux Yeah and also I've noticed that your style has changed over time as well. I sound like parrot, but your videos are very professional and strait forward. Because of this, it's very easy to follow your tutorials. Right now, I'm installing Arch on Virtual-Box and it's VERY easy, and I've only been using Linux for less than year! About to download this now but cant make up my mind what version to get. I know this is traditionally a KDE distro but I'm really more into XFCE and GNOME guy.
Should I go with KDE just to get the full experience or are the other versions more than just quick respins?
@KevTechie I haven't had a chance to check out the Gnome version yet, but it shouldn't be a big deal to install any of the other desktop environments on top of whichever one you install from.
@robvelor exactly. :) I looked at the 7D when I picked up the T2i, but it was almost twice the price with no lens, and the benefits didn't justify it for me. I'm planning to invest more in the glass. :)
Never used Mandriva or Mandrake, but if I ever wanted to use an rpm based distro I would probably use openSUSE. It has YaST which appears to be very similar to DrakeConf from your description
you know, I spend a lot of my time on distrowatch and reading around the linux sites and even in IRC chatrooms with developers, and i still dont get as much information in an easy to process fashion as you give, keep up the good work, "you have my comment, and MY like"
@Motosuna1982 From what I understand, Chakra makes the installation process a bit easier. I don't remember if it has a graphical package manager or not.
With either one, if you're comfortable opening up a terminal, typing in "sudo pacman -Syu" to update, or "sudo pacman -S packagename" to install something new, you should be ok. :)
@renegade8164 haven't spent a lot of time looking at it yet, but it seems interesting enough. Looks like they're combining a bunch of features from iOS into the traditional OSX. iOSX? :P
@thisweekinlinux Yeah, it's looks more beautiful, and I think it kills Gnome 3 Shell now with 'Mission Control' (A combination of Expose/Spaces/Dashboard). I think Mac OSX Lion bit it's more nicer then a hybrid-os as windows 8 I think.
this 'tainted' is a really ambiguous for the non-technical (should i say non-religious), like the 'restricted' drivers ubuntu used to have. to quote torvalds himself: 'the user doesn't care!'
anyway, mageia is great, they even fixed the l18n bug with british english that mandriva has had now for ages. i really would like to use it as my main linux desktop, but since it's so young, i think i'll stick with debian testing for a while. :)
@sameyieyir I completely understand where you're coming from. I've been meaning to look at Mandriva and a ton of other distros for the last year and a half, and other things just keep getting in the way. I'll admit, I do tend to favor Ubuntu-based distros and Fedora, because (according to the stats over at Distrowatch), they're the two most popular distros, and have been for a long time.
However, I do intend to cover more non-Ubuntu distros in the future, it's just going to take longer to do.
Mageia looks promising. I cut my teeth on Mandriva about 5 years ago. Those were tough times for me (learning the Linux way - Migrating from Windows). When I switched from Mandriva to Ubuntu, it was like a breath of fresh air. Very interesting. Thanks for the first look & background on this.
@ReducedOxygen Yggdrasil. It hasn't been updated in a while but might still work... Another one is Kanotix which is a bit more up to date. Crux is more usable but still interesting. Also BasicLinux which needs two 3 1/2 floppies...
@ReducedOxygen ... Don't really know which one would be the bestest weird distro, however I do have Ubuntu Satanic Edition on mine. Satanic has several tweaks that just make the icons & desktop look pretty awesome. Also, an evil startup sound. But for the most part, it's just Ubuntu w/a few tweaks.
@420timetoburn ... Whether Satan is real (or not) isn't the point! Has nothing to do with the topic at hand (re: the original question). This was in reference to the question referring to "weird operating systems". The Satanic Edition was the only one I could think of. There may be others.
Brief, informative, and tantalizing review about Mageia. Thank you for your videos.
Just one observation though: I sorta felt like you were a typewriter. You began the video positioned in the center of the frame, then you started to slide to the right. A quick edit and you were back to the center or the left. Repeat and again you started to slide to the right side of the frame. I noticed in part because I watched your Advice for Aspiring YouTubers: Look At The Camera! video on TWILTalks recently
@ulsigem yeah, I was a bit antsy when I filmed this last night, because I had just drank an energy drink, but also, it was sort of a "jump cut" effect. say one thing, move somewhere else, say something else. Where I'm using such a zoomed in lens, my movement area is very small, and the depth of field is very shallow. Probably not a technique that should be used with my setup. :P
Bout time Old man. haha kiddin... nice review man... Mageia goes alright... lacking some software titles though with no alternate 3rd party repos as far as i know of yet
@ulsigem really? Odd... that repo was definitely enabled, but when I searched for "flash", that didn't show up. I even enabled the Tainted repo and checked that as well.
I would assume it's because I'm running 64-bit and there isn't a 10.3 version for 64-bit, but it should still show up on a search....
@thisweekinlinux You are correct sir!! It seems that the 64-bit version does not have it. I was looking at the i586 repository. I tend to run 32-bit versions of distros. My apologies.
Gwenview is a photo viewer that is part of the KDE suite. Counter-intuitive I know. They normally would call it something like Klearglass or something with a K thats kludged in there somewhere.
I use to love KDE back in RedHat 6.2 days. That KDE was really really fast. Much faster than Gnome, but something happened in the mean time and KDE became something I didn't really like.
Pretty much since I've used Linux, through all the distros I've tried I always settle into Ubuntu or Mandriva, so I probably will try this out., as it's interesting to see new blood on the Mandriva fork.
@Sylinic Rofl, his beard is exactly like mine before I shaved... Also I will most likely try Mageia, I found out about it when it was being tested before version 1 and was gonna try it out just haven't had the time. I am actually rather surprised myself that it is still on Gnome 2 but it makes sense seeing as many people do not like the Gnome-Shell or the Gnome-Fallback mode which isn't quite the same as the Gnome we all grew to love.
Ubuntu got broken during upgrade from 9.04 to 10.10. I went 9.04 to 9.10, then to 10.04, then 10.10.. repositories corrupted, multiple installs ensued. All this hassle because of java crashing, and not 9.04 not supported anymore.
Got back up and running using eeebuntu nebook remix 9.04 -64bit AMD.

Hmmmm, it looks nice and polished. Perhaps I should give it a try. Ubuntu 11.04 seems to not like my desktop or my laptop.

@erikdravn how come? What are your problems with Unity?

Bout time Old man. haha kiddin... nice review man... Mageia goes alright... lacking some software titles though with no alternate 3rd party repos as far as i know of yet
Linux4UnMe 8 months ago
@Linux4UnMe I did notice they are lacking Flash in their repos, which is a bit sad, but not terribly difficult to get around by just installing it.
thisweekinlinux 8 months ago
@thisweekinlinux There is a package in the nonfree repository:
flash-player-plugin-10.3.181.14-1.mga1.src.rpm
According to the Mageia homepage, the repository should be enabled by default.
Hope you're feeling better. Have an awesome day!
ulsigem 8 months ago
@ulsigem really? Odd... that repo was definitely enabled, but when I searched for "flash", that didn't show up. I even enabled the Tainted repo and checked that as well.
I would assume it's because I'm running 64-bit and there isn't a 10.3 version for 64-bit, but it should still show up on a search....
thisweekinlinux 8 months ago
@thisweekinlinux You are correct sir!! It seems that the 64-bit version does not have it. I was looking at the i586 repository. I tend to run 32-bit versions of distros. My apologies.

Maybe the Mageia developers hate Gnome 3. :P

Just a quick correction, despite the name Gwenview is not a Gnome but a KDE-Application. (and the default KDE-Imageviewer) no GTK there ;)
Tarnus88 8 months ago 2
Gwenview is a photo viewer that is part of the KDE suite. Counter-intuitive I know. They normally would call it something like Klearglass or something with a K thats kludged in there somewhere.

:/
i'd try it this instant. but not enough info on wifi drivers ><

ahhhh... mandrake was the first distro I used, in those times I didn't understood why mandrake wasn't the same as knoppix, I was soooo young

love the new format!

@thisweekinlinux 2:22 "GIMP and Gwenview...". I know the latter starts with G, but it's a KDE app written in Qt. Just a quick correction :P

@jakublojewski my mistake, thanks for pointing it out!

I use to love KDE back in RedHat 6.2 days. That KDE was really really fast. Much faster than Gnome, but something happened in the mean time and KDE became something I didn't really like.
TheMeanEYE 8 months ago
what's the name of that 3rd and not that legal repository?

@blackoutworm "Tainted"

So I assume you're feeling better now?
TheiBurley 8 months ago
@TheiBurley feeling a bit better, yes. Still congested, still coughing a decent amount, but getting better every day. Thanks!
thisweekinlinux 8 months ago
Pretty much since I've used Linux, through all the distros I've tried I always settle into Ubuntu or Mandriva, so I probably will try this out., as it's interesting to see new blood on the Mandriva fork.

Your beard, is fucking glorious.
Sylinic 8 months ago 69
@Sylinic Rofl, his beard is exactly like mine before I shaved... Also I will most likely try Mageia, I found out about it when it was being tested before version 1 and was gonna try it out just haven't had the time. I am actually rather surprised myself that it is still on Gnome 2 but it makes sense seeing as many people do not like the Gnome-Shell or the Gnome-Fallback mode which isn't quite the same as the Gnome we all grew to love.

Nice!

YAY!!! Kinda mandriva review. <3333 you Jordan. :D

@Latvian4ever not necessarily better, just different. :P It's all a matter of preference.
I've been meaning to try out Chakra myself, though.
