@nextlifearotti you are correct. in modern military saluting is only used from armed force to armed force. so P.O. to P.O., or Soldier to Soldier. and in fact there is a rule connected; if you have a cap/hat etc. (military head wear) you may salute, if not you can only nod your head.

where does the salute come from; many years ago, knights had to lift the mask part of their helmet to see a respected person in the eye. that move is the ancestor of the salute.
