  • For me, Toby Stephens is the epitome of Rochester. There is no other! And no matter what Jane may think, Toby is HAWT. :-D

  • @LoomofDreams Agreed! Thank you for your vote! :)

  • haha... toby of course :D

    "do you think me handsome?"

    jane: "no, sir"

    me: "hell yeah!"

  • @Barbatipu I have that same reaction!

  • My one and only perfect Mr.Rochester is George C.Scott in the 1970 movie!

  • TOBY !

  • I've also seen all five versions and for the longest time I would have said Ciaran, but then I saw the 2006 version. Toby all the way!

  • Toby all the way! second choice Ciaran!

  • Timothy Dalton FTW

  • Favorites will always remain Toby and Micheal :D

  • Ciaran Hinds!!! Love him!!!

  • Fassbender and Stephens

  • toby is the best!! :D well I think ^^

  • Ciaran Hinds, hands down best Mr. Rochester! He is so passionate and his eyes tell all. Love it!

  • So I loved all Rochesters, but my favourite is Timothy Dalton!!

  • after seeing the five versions, for my Toby is simply the best

  • a Ciaran Hinds - Toby Stephens tie ...

  • Toby he is the best Mr Rochester there cannot be anyone else

  • Tobi!

  • MICHAEL FASSBENDER! :D <3

  • @myAFlmCfLyRomance. Wanted to knw which is YOUR favorite and why. Or perhaps like me u r hoping n waiting til Gilbert is the next Rochester (though he is a little too perfect)

  • This music was from Ann of Green Gables so it made me think how Marilla asked Ann 'would you want to marry a wicked man? Anne replies ' I think I would like it if he could be wicked'. So I think Fassbender, he seems more wicked but every word out of his mouth is poetic.

  • @ThiiNatawii Love your response! I am so excited and impressed that you used an Anne of Green Gables reference!

  • I'll go for Michael Fassbender. I don't like him that much, but he is an impressive Mr Rochester!

  • I like how Ciaran Hinds and Orsen Wells played the Mr. Rochester Part, But Michael Fassbender and Timothy Dalton are so handsome!!!

  • Ciaran Hinds for me. I also like the whole movie the best too.

  • . Timothy Dalton's Rochester is the kindest of them all he loves Jane and he shows it. The scene when they are parting is just brilliant. Toby Stephens is the charming and sexy one, he really teases Jane and adds playfulness to the character which was quite new.Michael Fassbender’s Rochester was the darkest one, he really portraits the image of the tormented man in search of salvation. They were all so phenomenal that I can’t decide, although Ciaran Hinds’ Rochester was very good as well.

  • Timothy Dalton- please let's be realistic, nobody can do it better, he simply did it!

  • Timothy Dalton is the best but Toby Stephens is really sexy!!!

  • Timothy Dalton - no contest.

  • I liked Timothy Dalton

  • It is close between Toby Stephens and Timothy Dalton. But even if Toby Stephens is a better actor, and I think 2006 is the best interpretation of the novel so far, he still feels a little too modern for Edward Rochester. Timothy Dalton was so much Rochester that he made me laugh thru the whole series. I never thought of Bluebeard before, but when they visited Bertha in 1983, I felt they should have a look at the other rooms in the attic just in case.

Timothy Dalton wins with one nose-length.

  • Hard to pick one, but I'll go with Michael Fassbender. I loved the way he played Rochester in this dark, modern version of Jane Eyre.

  • I love Toby in the TV and Michael in the movie versions. There. Best of both worlds hahaha.

  • Mr. acting-genius Toby Stephens! (naturally^^)

  • Timothy Dalton by far. He displayed the emotional range in his portrayal of the volatile but sensitive Rochester the closest to the book. I have yet to see Fassbender. Ciaran Hinds was too angry while William Hurt (one of my favourite actors) was too bland. Toby was a close second but found him too likeable. Rochester had to be a delicate mix of masculinity, rage, passion and sensitivity.

  • Toby Stephen 2006 Mr Rochester!!! nobody can stand against his sexy handsomeness...

  • Toby Stephens. Even though he is a little too handsome for the role, I loved the way he completely understood the character and managed to transmit Rochester's feelings and emotions.

And now talking about the looks I have to say that when I read the book I quite imagined him more like Timothy Dalton (plain and with strong features, almost ugly).

Well, I still prefer Stephens though. Brilliant acting.

  • @PATRIICIA89 how can you describe Timothy Dalton as plain? the rest of the description is in place, even though, instead of ugly, I would rather say handsome/beautiful, charismatic- but not perfect. :)

  • Micheal Fassbender<3

  • For me, my Rochester is Ciaran Hinds.

  • Now your next project is to find out who is the best Jane Eyre>>>

  • @nikemac84 yep, that is what I was thinking!

  • I have seen all five versions that these actors played in. I am keeping in track with the book/novel. In it, it specifically says that Mr. Rochester was in his early 40's and that his appearance no way rivaled that of Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise or Luigi diCaprio. Therefore, my perfect choice for Mr. Rochester is Cirian Hinds. The other actors (except for William Hurt) are just too young and handsome. Also, Cirian Hinds' portrayal of Mr. Rochester was closest to that of the book.

  • @nikemac84 Thank you for your vote! I have seen all five as well, and each film has their strengths and weaknesses. For example, I love the gypsy scene but only two of the films include it.

  • @nikemac84 oh com'on how can dalton who was 37 be too young for the roll? plus, was Mr Rochester in his early 40's or late 30's. the other thing, Dalton is a handsome man- figure wise but he is not somebody whom we could call beautiful, because his beauty is quite imperfect, he is very charismatic though and is owner of those gorgeous eyes and toll proud appearance, when it comes to eyes they should be dark, but timothy's eyes do match description otherwise.

  • @nikemac84 I agree that from the book's physical desciption Hinds's appearance - sans moustache - seems closest but certainly not in his portrayal. I also disagree that the book specifies that he's in his early 40s - it implies that he's in his late 30s. Toby Stephens was 36/37 in 2006. Dalton and Jayston were 37/38.

  • William Hurt and Michael Fassbender. Do I really have to choose?

  • @TheAshenQueen5139 Yes, I'm afraid so. I understand your dilemma. :)

  • @myAFImCfLyRomance

Okay, I'm going with Michael Fassbender. . .

William Hurt, I am so so sorry.

  • Of course, only Toby!

Nobody touched women's hearts, as he. He is perfect

  • Toby is the BEST

  • TOBY STEPHENS, of course!

He IS Edward Fairfax Rochester forever.

  • Toby Stephens!

  • Toby Stephens!!! *___*

  • Toby Stephens. No one else.

  • You left off Orson Welles & Michael Jayston! (And George C Scott, but there's no competition there anyway.) Uh. My vote's for Toby Stephens anyway. :) Haven't seen the new film yet (5 months & 8 days left) so don't know about Fassbender.

  • @doctortrax Yeah, I only included the five most recent portrayals. Thanks for the comment & vote!

  • O, TMT (the magnificent Toby) of course!!

  • ahh Toby !!!

  • Toby forever

  • Michael Fassbender :)
