  • Fun to hear this again.

  • Our fraternity band played this song at all parties. Hello Steve Bennett wherever you are.

  • Rochester Legion PIttsburgh Pa.do the slop to this with the music blasting( priceless)!

  • i bout wore this record out as a kid ... ♥

  • every now and then a record comes along that has that extra special something about it and you instantly like it and I am glad the very talented offspring of Jessie Hill are keeping it going STRONG!!!

  • This is not doo-wop. This is classic New Orleans "in the crack" music. ("The crack" is the magic place between a swing beat and straight eight beat.)

Tenor sax Raymond Hill, who played on Rocket 88 and Junior Parker's Mystery Train. I expect this is Huey Smith on piano.

  • @TomParmenter Thank you! I was never sure how explain this to younger musicians. The crack.....perfect!

  • @TomParmenter i think it is Allen Toussaint on piano

  • Hot soul!!!!!

  • I still have this 45. Played it plenty. Thanks for the post.

  • as a kid...my dad repaired juke boxes and he played this song all the time, brings back good memories.even though it was older than me.

  • So THIS is the original version!

  • There's a version by the Who/High Numbers on youtube.

  • Aw rite!!

  • We did the mashed potatoes to this one.

  • @musicteachjw I did the mashed potaoe to this in 1962. Used to play it on the juke box at Sportmans park in LA on western aVe. 10 cents to play a record on the box. I have this on a 45. One of my all time favorites.

  • there used to be a place called teen hall in houston where kids went to dance. this song played and we did a dance called 'the slop' along with 'the whip'. i lived to dance and wrap houses. )))

  • my grandmother wrote this. win win win

  • this is a classic..chicanos love this song for weddings/parties..Inland Empire,Ca

  • Hits my heart. Wallach's Music City, where you could actually play the record to see if you liked it. Or just wanted to hear it. Those were the days.

  • @DIANNEELEE

Oh, my sister and I lived in that place practically...We saw Telly Savalas in there one night, fingering his way through the big bins of albums they had then. They were indeed the days. Albums were $5.95 and 45s were $.50. Gone forever!!!

  • Remember cruising Hollywood Blvd. with high school buds listening to KFWB and Jessie Hill came on with this classic. We all went to Wallach's Music City to get a copy.

  • @alanhfrank

    Absolutely!

  • Freshman in High School,'59/'60. Freshman Class In Auditorium For Drivers Ed Class. Ended In Riot. Girls Were Sent Home(expell'd) Boys Remain In Auditorium Until 2:30 PM. Everybody DICKEN AROUND!. I Went To The Top Of BLEACHERS And Yell'd.."YO----O", Someone Answered "YO---O" (Higher Pitch).

    Always A Chant....PART 2.PART 2..

    C-MON ESSE!....ROCK-n-ROLL< BUBBA!

  • anybody know if Jessie did one called Don't dog your woman???

  • Great classic. Sounds like "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boggie Woogie Flu."

  • I hear this some on XM Satellite Radio's 60s on 6 channel.

  • my BF (G) is from Louisiana now in minneapolis because of hurricane Katrina, but anyways he was friends with jessee and used to roll around town and hung out at tipper tina's. prtty Kool!!!!

  • In the early 60's the crowd loved when this was played..my husband played guitar in a band..got the ppl moving! Love it!

  • @dar4869 It was a mod anthem in Brighton back in the '60's, great to hear it again!

  • generally not to nutz about do op, but this one is pretty good, swingy.

  • great beat...........

  • I learned to do the Jitterbug to this one in the early sixties; having euphoric recall as I write, listening to it.

  • I sang my way through college in D.C. "The Jesters" were some kind of good. We did our gig - including ooh-poo-pah doo - at The Parkside Cafe, 14th & I Sts, NW. God, those memories of our glory days, our salad days.

  • great one to dance too...ohhh my...the memories

  • Ahem. This is Rock and Roll!!!

The original rock and roll is the best.

  • As a regular asian 25 year old I do not have access to great old music such as this.. The media (TV, Radio) only broadcasts lame 'modern' pop music.

In fact I have just heard about Jessie Hill a couple of days ago due to random search on Youtube.

So please, PLEASE DON'T DELETE THIS ONE! For the sake of introducing golden old music to young generation such as I

  • @bellynellykelly

You have to search good music out, it's not around for the taking. 80% of what is actively promoted is crap.

Jesse Hill made a bunch of great records, you can get a CD of his stuff from amazon

  • @lordkoos you got it right my man

  • @lordkoos You can get these golden oldies (even in vinyl) at Roadhouse Oldies in Silver Spring Maryland. They do mail order. Ask for Scooter Magruder.

  • @bellynellykelly Jessie Hill was a friend of mine. He had a great musical history. He played with Huey "Piano" Smith's band and was the drummer for Professor Longhair's band for awhile. He co-wrote some of Dr. John's early hits. He was part of the house band on the Sonny and Cher Show and they recorded one of the songs he wrote. He is the grandfather of Trombone Shorty , who is an up-and -coming Jazz/Rock star , who says he learned his showmanship from his grandfather . Check out WWOZ.org .

  • The deleted the other video of this song! Please dont delete this one! Its rare doo wop!

  • looks like there aren't too many of us who remember this great song.....used to be on the radio all the time...aaah, the good old days!!!

  • Add me to your list I remember this song on the radio and I remember dancing to live bands who played this song.

  • thanks for remembering with me....weren't we lucky to have the best music ever...try comparing it to the stuff around today...at least we could dance to it....try listening to the music from the new movie "Cadillac Records" and let me know how much you like it...

  • I did a search for "Cadillac Records" really great. Thanks for turning me on to this movie. I am sure it will bring back great memories. These are all the greats of the blues, rock,- I have seen some of them in person in night clubs.

  • hi again, you might have a hard time finding the movie playing locally. i saw it in manhattan, but haven't seen it playing where i live. beyonce was great as etta james....all music was the best...definitely will buy the dvd when available. then i can put it with all the 45's that i cannot part with. crazy, huh?

  • I not only remember it, I have it on a 45, and it's only been played about a million times!

  • what are we gonna do with our 45's? can't part with them, but how much do we really listen to them? especially ones that have been played "about a million times?"

  • I know exactly what you mean! I only have about 50 45s but I've got 5 file boxes of LPs from the late sixtes to '75 or so..

You wouldn't happen to be a Laverne Baker fan would ya, Tweedlededee?

  • howd'ya guess, Dude? She made good music all those years ago...would still put her against most of today's singers. You didn't answer my questions of what we should do with all of our old records, never mind cassettes...One suggestion..keep them in a place where they won't get damaged, warped or wet. They are still worth money, if you can part with them...I haven't been able to...

  • Well, bein' as my name is Jim, you know I have one LaVerne Baker record!

I actually think I'm gonna sell my collection. I just need the space and I don't ever play 'em any more. I talked to a couple of local guys who want me to bring 'em in. I think I'm gonna do it.

  • is your collection in good condition? mine are sitting on a shelf in a cold garage...kinda like a burial place. however, i've been told that they are still worth money, so i wish you good luck...my brother sold his jazz collection for some good money, but who knows what you'll get in these tough times....will be interested to read if you hae some luck...bye bye, jim dandy....

  • Drenched in New Orleans soul.
