according to my knowledge different sizes of quantum dots adsorb different colours from the visible light ! for example Au nano particles are an intense burgundy colour and bit bigger particles are blue( still in nano meter size as i remembered the practical ) , gold solids are gold in colour :)
I guess these are UV-LEDs in some sort of small flasks. The scientist than adds the quantum dotted liquid to that flasks (see caged quantum dots). The quantum dots are stimulated by the UV light and emit light in there specific colour
if you were very resourseful could you make the quantum dots using ...standard beakers and utensils and chemicalsm off of the internet?
