its not a sash although it looks like one, one person wears a red cloth on their belt so distinguish him when the judges give the scores (with red and white flags) I believe he is from a goju ryu school
the guy in black does not do kung fu, He does kempo ryu, a form of karate simmilar to that of kyokushin. And i know this cos i was there :P and btw the sash is to distinguish the two fighters like red and blue and corner.

ok, If its not a sash, and its a belt, its karate, there is no red belt in kung fu, you only get red belt when you are the grandmaster
