  • its sad to see this church go down, and if was because someone set it, its even more upsetting. that church was standing for over 170 years. i have gone there since i was a kid and now its gone :(

  • So sad. Thank G*d that no one was hurt. I am not from Somers but I have close friends who raised their kids there. It is a wonderful community and Barry is a good man.

  • praying this wasn't arson. n

  • sad. been there a couplr times

  • Having grown up in Somers and been to this church many times... it's still hard to believe it's gone.

  • wow...

  • @tableturns77: If you're going to comment on my video please don't try and start arguments obviously if your opinion is different then others then this isn't the video to express your feelings on. This was a historic building and whether people believe in the religion or not your insulting the town with your negativity. Thank you

  • So sad to see such a beauty of god to go. god bless and god speed..

  • Very sad to see this building like this. Although I have not lived in town long, it was certainly one I could recognize. I can only say that I have been in the rear part of the building while checking out the co-op preschool. As a former volunteer firefighter, I can only imagine the frustration of the FD as they had no choice as to how to fight the fire. Thanks for posting this video.

  • This happened right down the street from my house. My family was asleep, and I listened to my fan turn off, so my father wandered outside with my sister and they saw the fire from our house.

  • I'd only been in there once for a sermon, but I remember it was beautiful. Now when I pass by on my way home, it's a shock. Sure, I admit I didn't really notice it before since I'd seen it for so many years, but now...

I wish the members of the Somers Congregational Church and the rest of the Somers community to gain strength from this experience and help each other recover.

  • Sad. I remember my time there fondly.

  • This is horrible, But the families in town will rebuild. we have too, All of the beautiful weddings that have taken place in this church. All of the good it has done for our community. It is time we all give back to the church. Rev. Barry Cass would help anyone who came to the door or asked for help. remember "reap what you sow" and this church has sown alot of good faith,Lets help them reap back what they have sown.

  • I'm heart broken. There certainly is a Somers, CT, and it's a beautiful town. I grew up there and passed that church every day on the way to school. If you grew up there, you eventually come to the realization that when you see the Somers Inn and Somers Congregational Church you can feel it in your heart: YOU'RE HOME. Now to grieve and rebuild.

  • Great way to start off 2012 huh

  • So sad that church was built in the 1700s now its gone.

That church was my favorite church 2

  • But it's ok:)

  • @BoardtoDeath um... I HAPPEN TO LIVE THERE!!!

  • this is pretty much (used to be) the first building you notice driving into somers...

  • I stand corrected. This article appeared in the Greenwich CT newspaper. I thought because Somers NY is 10 miles away this was why the story was in the Greenwich Paper. My mistake.

  • Just went to service @ local town hall. Pray for Rev. Dr. Cass.

  • I have family friends that attend this church and have been inside. It was a beautiful old church, a piece of history that is gone forever. My prayers are with the community. What a great way to start 2012:(((

  • This is terrible. I have driven past that church all my life--what a shock. :(

  • I live in Somers, CT

  • You may get more hits if you correct the headline to Somers NY instead

Of Somers CT. There is no Somers CT.

  • @Boardtoodeath you're ignorant

  • @philbert1396

I wish I were like you, someone who has never made a mistake. I corrected myself and indicated why I believed this was Somers, NY. Read the comments and you'd see that.

  • @Boardtoodeath It is not somers NY it is somers ct.......your ignorant somers is located in between stafford and enfield. Its a terrible thing drove by it this morning...

  • @Boardtoodeath seriously? check your sources before you post something like this. this fire was in somers, CT, which does, by the way, exist.

  • @Boardtoodeath I live in Somers CT, buddy. This is a horrible tragedy to the town and community

  • @Boardtoodeath there is a somers CT.....

  • @Boardtoodeath you may get more thumbs up if you correct your post, there IS a Somers CT.

  • This is the worst thing that happened all year!

  • I was there behind you

  • @tableturns77 Most likly trying to save your sorry butt from the Devil, Everyone beleives in something, Even your family and friends beleive in you and you are a NOTHING.

  • @MrDeanise what devil? i only beleiving in something when i see it like a normal, logical and reasonable person. so all those bible torah koran maple leaf stories don't mean shit to me, so if you want to remain a child and beleive in magic tricks be my guest

  • @tableturns77 You only believe in something when u see it well what u see is not only a church going down but a place where there was a food pantry, preschool (not religious), AA meetings, girl scouts meetings, boy scout meetings. They also rented out the bottom room for functions like birthday parties, baby showers and such. I am not of this religion but i am from this community.

  • @tableturns77 I have full respect for the church and what it did within our community. It is a tragedy for all walks of life in this area even if they were not members of this church. To call this hilarious is appalling, disrespectful, and im disgusted. If you want to not believe in a religion thats your choice but to put down peoples pain and sorrow is horrendous.

  • @tableturns77 OK , so does this mean that you do not beleive in Air? You can't see it but you sure use enought of it.You can't see history As it is happening. But yet you beleive that it happened, because there is written words . Beleiveing in the Bible is some of the oldest history we have. people like you only strenghen my faith , because there are devils like you. i love seeing the world from a childs eye view. It is always so much brighter.

  • @MrDeanise obviously we cant see air but our lungs need it for the oxygen for us to survive, its been proven by science. the bible is a bunch of bullshit stories that some men wrote to gain control of people. it is all make belief. actually its you that is the devil because you jesus freaks and religious assholes cause all the wars, you create hatred and seperation, you are anti woman, anti freedom and are homophobes.

  • @tableturns77 I find it hypocritical that you're calling others out for their so called 'hatred' after reading your hate slathered diatribe. All I can suggest is that you try to become less a pathetic, hating and seperational individual going forward. I am not a religious person by any means but I am also not a fan of the by-product of over opinionated, mental midgets either.

  • @djdepaolo hey im not hating just laughing my ass off cause everytime a church burns down cause its suppose to be this holy place and gods house and as you know god watches everything everywhere every second of the day, and then all these jesus freaks gather around and have prayer services. that is very laughable. you people are so gullible.

  • @tableturns77 It's one thing to have an opinion, it's another thing to be right or wrong, and it's another thing to be a total dick about either. The church was a historic and symbolic staple of this community, and the local response proves the effect its had on the town's unity. And you chose to use a tragedy in a petty effort to degrade other's beliefs? I don't care if you're right or wrong, you're just an asshole!

  • @tableturns77 Uh huh, and this somehow gives you the right to act like a total douche?

  • @tableturns77 Just when I thought they outlawed douche bags, and you post... I am not religious, nor did I attend this church, however, this church was not only a church, but a center of the community I live in. It has stood for over a century and a half (that's 150 years for the small minded like you). My daughter was accepted into the co-op preschool that was held in the rear addition to this building. It is a HUGE loss for the town.

  • @instap you're a dumbass for sending your daughter to this school to have her brainwashed with some bible bullshit.

  • @tableturns77 The preschool leased the space and wasn't religious in nature. Why don't you just go back to your internet porn with your tiny penis and tweezers, and pathetic life? Or better yet, when you slice your wrists, please be sure to go vertically, and not horizontally...

  • My brother said he heard the church bells going ding bong boing and stuff in the middle of the night

  • yeah I told the news Company about them. Wasn't expecting the video to be used in the future haha

  • OMG what is going to happen to the many wonderful programs the church sponsored - AA meetings, preschool, food bank ... etc. This church offered so many people in our community and the surrounding communities assistance, guidance and faith. Thank God no one was hurt.

    Barbra

  • Nice shot ,but I would cut out the f--k

  • holy cow that church WAS so fun
