@tenaciouspum You're going to need a bass amp. The Fender Bronco 40 is a great bass amp for only about $200-300, which is cheap depending on your budget. If your budget is about $800, then you can get a Fender Bronco 40 bass amp and $500-600 Ibanez SR375 or SR400 which are both really great basses, especially for the price.
@Cyan1902 I've never heard of an Ibanez SR765, I've heard of Ibanez SR755 though. Are you sure that you got an actual Ibanez, or did you get ripped off by some off shore brand? You might want to look up the information on where you get it.
Ed, Would u say the sterling ray 34 (or sb 14) or the ibanez sr500 would be a more versatile bass? I play all types of music from rock, to slap to jazz, and am looking for a versatile active instrument that's made well and has great tone. Again any help at all would be great:) thanks
could anyone tell me about my ibanez bass guitar i got it for free from a family friend and i here its a rare guitar but i just want to kno a little bit more about it if somone could help... its a IBANEZ SB 1200 i think its a 1990-1991
i remember when i first started to play bass i told my old friend ,that played guitar, that i was going to get an ibanez, and he said that ibanezes suck at makeing basses and that i should get i fender instead...i wish that i found a video like this before i got the fender becuase this sounds ALOT better
@burrito1331 Thats what my friend said when I got my first bass but when i tested the basses against each other the ibanez bass was a million times better
well i respect your opinion, but what pissed me off was that my friend said that ibanez sucked at makeing basses, and if i found this video before i got a fender i would of had an ibanez that i liked instead of a fender that i dont like.
Well buying a bass guitar is very subjective, if you don't like a bass, you obviously shouldn't buy it.
I've played multi thousand dollar basses that I didn't like.
And in the past, I've heard a lot about Ibanez guitars basses having problems, thought it was likely on much older Ibanez basses, they've definitely gotten much better since.
Your friend could have also been referring to the characteristic Fender sound, which is extremely recognizable in all types of music.
ya it was pretty stupid of me to buy a bass that i didnt even want. but my friend had alot more experience than me on guitars so i thought he was being serious with me (that was about 4 or more years ago) but turns out that he wanted to be in a band exactly like blink 182, and have the same gear as them. i now have an ibanez that i love so much more than the fender.
@burrito1331 a lot of rock musicians prefer Ibanez instead of Fender and Music Man. For example KoRn, In Flames and etc. I think they know what they do. But it depends upon the style of Music what you want to play. For example now I'm fond of jazz and funk, that's why I want Fender of Music Man. for Heavy rock Ibanez is better.
Is this normal or it's because I don't have a proper setup? Maybe a Std. Jazz V could have a smaller gap between strings and body (because my 4 stringers feel more confortable) or 5 string basses need to have that bigger gap because of the strings? Is this influenced by the neck profile? (the neck of the GSR205 looks really thick on top the neck body joint). Thanks in advance for your answer.
@mrmusica that's gonna depend both on your string action off of the fretboard, and how high the fretboard is off of the body. you might want to try lowering your string action as much as you can without buzz. if that doesn't help much with the problem, it'll have to be something you get used to. hope i help somehow.
Ed, a quite complex question: I have an Ibanez GSR205, a begginer bass I bought around 8 years ago because I wanted a 5 string; it has a good sound that I like but I feel the strings too far away from the body (compared to my yamaha RBX170 -11 yr old- and my new Fender Std. P -thanx f your advice-) and it affects my slapping thecnique because I feel harder to pop since I put my ring and index fingers on the bass's body (cont...)
That sounds AWESOME.....Teach me how to play that way....I have an Ibanez SG10...Not the greatest bass but it does sound nice....That bass is gorgeous.
You know, any bass is only as good as the player. If you're a beginner, get a inexpensive Ibanez and learn to play. Then, if you feel the need, graduate to a MM or Warwick. If you can already play, then the Ibanez is a good working musicians' bass. I've played for over 40 years, and I'll use my Ibanez basses (I have several) as much if not more than my MM or MIA Fenders...
you are a great bass player. But next time you should demo a REAL BASS like warwick, Ken Smith, Tobias, Or even Fender american. You know that no real bass players would play that cheap brand.
Get an Ibanez with Bartolini pick ups, unless you have an awesome rig. Any bass will sound good on a good rig. That's what good rigs are for. If you have a decent little rig, get like a sr500 or anything with Bartolinis.
I've got one of these, believe me, you need a rig like that to get that much tone out of it...I've got an ART MP Tube preamp running into a Hartke A-70, and it only gets about half of that tone...it is a pretty bass and incredibly well made...paid $350...the neck is perfect...as always, Ibanez gives more value for money that any manufacturer...
I've played the sr300 several times. I don't care for the electronics much. I guess I'm stuck on passive basses. I will say the sr300 is the most comfortable bass I've ever played. The neck was super thin, and the action was very low. The output was about the same as my p bass.
@otaybuckwheet I found that it depends on the bass. I only played passive basses for many years, but since then I've run across the Fender Jaguar and the EBMM Stingray (or its nearly-as-good overseas assembled equivalent, the Sterling Ray 34/5). Unlike the active on Ibanez and Yamaha, which give you that horrible, flat, dead sound, those two have all the personality of a passive with the tone modelling that makes active worthwhile. They're now my mainstays. I really recommend checking them out.
I have a problem with your videos. You make everything sound so freaking good. I don't know what basses are sub-par anymore. Stop being such a good player! lol
@danakerman no way. Yes. A lot comes from the hands but plug a Fodera into Eden Stack. Play the open a. Then the same with an Ibanez but also a Fender or Music Man. They sound very very different. The Player take this and enhance it with his skills... but he´s not able to make let a Instrument sound better that it is. He can only use the max of his possibilities. I personally hate the sound auf this one, no matter how good Ed plays. And he plays a badass amp... got no soul. sign 2 rockrock3090
@ChiapasZapata what you described is perhaps timbre, resonance, sustain, or generally speaking sound quality. But it's not SOUL. Soul is an expression of a living being, which, in the case of music, is brought out more by quality equipment. There's no denying some instruments sound better than others. But that still isn't soul ;-)
@danakerman ok, we have a different definition of soul :) You ever played a real good bass? I mean, a JB is a real nice bass especially some custom´s, but I talk about Fodera, Ken Smith, some Nordstrands, Marleaux or Walbrink. The soul of what you talkin about, the soul of a men, transferred to the instrument can also happen when a men "put his soul" in the instrument, while he is building it. Accuracy, love for details bring a lot a life in the instr. And that can push you a lot while practice
i got this bass on lay-by i have played it and i play alot of punk and metalcore and some funk for fun and this bass plays them all real well it has a nice clear deep sound that i love
ed!i just bought one of it...i think this is the best choice i have as a beginner!!!thanks for showing me the moves!!!i inspired by you..hope you have some books for the bass beginner lesson...more power to you...GODBLESS...
What the hell is with the "one size fits all" pickups? They're wide enough to fit on a 6 string bass. Good luck if you like to anchor your thumb on one.
The way this guy plays makes even this modest-priced bass sound far superior. As a guitarist looking for an inexpensive bass to record and just have fun with, this video has turned me on to the soundgear series knowing that I won't be breaking some knuckles fretting, or breaking the bank!
I have a really bad bass I've had it for 2 years and now I am buying a Ibanez GSR 200 will it really change my feeling of playing bass when I change to a new bass or do I have to get use to the new bass?
i had this bass about a year and a half ago it was a great bass bt i sold it. it had some neck problems and it went tward a warwick 5 string fretless so...worth it id say
i love my soundgear, i think its awesome. but i have diferent humbuckers. their are two right be each other on top and one on the bottom. but i love it!
It's just what sound you prefer.. cause I just took a look at a Fender bass and I have to say I like the hard, high-pitched fender sound very much. The Ibanez, however is warmer. It's amazing. Before you buy your first bass guitar, people, try out many and see what sound you like most.
@1more4carhur ibanez basses arnt king even though thats what im gonna by, ernie ball music man's, fender american jazz bass, or treyben basses are the best
I think I am sold on this bass... I play it at the music store I take lessons at all the time and now after seeing this whew, Im gonna trade my Thunderbird in for it, well and about $200 cuz I won't get much for my Bird. and yes the neck is so comfortable thats a big reason why I love it so much.
I bought it600er soundgear, and it's great! the sound is just awesome, it's a good "allrounder" and it beautiful (colour->natural(like wood), not ed's colour here :D)
the price was cool too, about 850 swiss francs, that's 730 $. I've never seen a bass that fits so perfect while your standing with the belt and stuff.
the only bad thing is, while your playing and you sit the bass is very uncomfortable, it's a bit sharp.
@katsushiro13 well it depends. i personaly find Ibanez's extremmely versatile and by having the treble at 9-10 and the bass at 6-8 u can get this realy punchy meaty tone that works wonders for mettal and hard rock but puc=nk u migh want a liitle less treble on it but ibanez makes great basses and i would say buy it man u wont be dissappointed and its only 400$ dude. a steal
@clipzngunz is the Ibanez really the better bass? The yamaha rbx 374 is made from an alder body, maple neck. I think the ibanez sr 400qm is basswood body. The yammy should have a better tone. But the Ibanez has an awesome neck. Pickup wise i think the yammy must be better..it has active EQ over the ibanez. But i hear that the yammy eats 9volt batteries for breakfast. To be honest, im in love with both these guitars. I dont know which one to buy!
@delitemyheart you can still get a great tone from an ibanez sdgr, especially the mahogany bodies. some have mahogany bodies. I got an ibanez k5. and not to mention the battery life is very long.
@clipzngunz yeah well this sr400qm in this video sounds pretty good, i must admit!
I really like the sr700. Have you seen that? Oh its just beautiful. It comes in an amber colour with a maple/bubinga body(i think). And it has bartolini pickups too. I bet that would sound good. They go for around $1200 ozzy bucks here in sydney though. The sr400qm goes for around $650(i think).
@delitemyheart i recommend it. its the field signature ed mentioned in the middle of vid after he was demonstrating the slap eq. if you know korn thats the bass fieldy uses. its a really awesome bass. light, comfortable and the neck is just fuckin awesome.
@yhtomitalmighty its funny that you ask cause i just came back from the music shop about an hour ago. I looked at the yamaha rbx 374, and the exact same ibanez as you see in this video. I didnt play any of them..the sales staff were busy with other customers..so i only looked at them. .Man its so hard to decide. The yamaha looks nice and the body is made from alder wood, it must have a good tone. The Ibanez body is basswood..but it still sounds pretty good.
@yhtomitalmighty at the moment im fumbling around on a Squier P bass. Its Ok..it has a nice fat sound..but i cant get a nice even tone from string to string. And with the tradtional style p bass pickups, i dont have much options to get different kinds of sounds out of it. There is only one volume and one tone control..and thats it. Im just a bit sick of it now. I want to start slappin" now lol.
@delitemyheart alder wood is really imo the best wood for bass. if you want tone options of course go for a fender jazz instead. i've owned 2 yamahas and its just wasn't i was looking for, i'm a jazz and rock player. personally i like passive more than active too.
you could just buy a fender jazz instead. my favorite bass of all time. i have an american made one and it is the best. i also have an ibanez and i don't know why exactly, maybe its the electronics, but they sound better than yamhas
@yhtomitalmighty man i love the sound of the fender jazz. Problem is they are bloody pricey here in aust. Also they have so many different models within the fender jazz bass..which one would you buy? I know the american made fender's are the best.
Ive never played a fender Jazz bass before. How is the neck feel on it? Do you reckon its as nice as the ibanez soundgear neck??
@yhtomitalmighty i checked out the fender highway one jazz bass on the fender web site,,and i think it has to be the best value for money fender j bass on the market. Now you got me drooling over it. Alder body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, badass 11 bridge and get this..alnico vintage pickups. Man what a bass. What more could you want in a bass. I think il have the sunburst finish thankyou!
@yhtomitalmighty thanx bro..i haven't got the bass yet..but when i do, i will definately let you know. I might even do a Me'shell Ndeogeocello bass cover on my channel with the guitar!
i play electric and i was thinking of getting a bass but do i need a bass amp or doesnt it really matter at low volumes

What the hell is with the "one size fits all" pickups? They're wide enough to fit on a 6 string bass. Good luck if you like to anchor your thumb on one.

Obviously this bass is using Bartollini pick-ups. I think basses using Bartoliini sounds similar.
electromanic 1 year ago
@electromanic this one uses ibanez pickups
they're curved to match the curve of the neck and strings
the sr500 and up have bartolini's

queesesolaluna 1 year ago
The way this guy plays makes even this modest-priced bass sound far superior. As a guitarist looking for an inexpensive bass to record and just have fun with, this video has turned me on to the soundgear series knowing that I won't be breaking some knuckles fretting, or breaking the bank!

I have a really bad bass I've had it for 2 years and now I am buying a Ibanez GSR 200 will it really change my feeling of playing bass when I change to a new bass or do I have to get use to the new bass?

Hey,Ed! :)
How do you like the sr300,have you played it?
Is the neck as good as sr400?
isomikieee 1 year ago
It's just what sound you prefer.. cause I just took a look at a Fender bass and I have to say I like the hard, high-pitched fender sound very much. The Ibanez, however is warmer. It's amazing. Before you buy your first bass guitar, people, try out many and see what sound you like most.

Hi guys
I bought it600er soundgear, and it's great! the sound is just awesome, it's a good "allrounder" and it beautiful (colour->natural(like wood), not ed's colour here :D)
the price was cool too, about 850 swiss francs, that's 730 $. I've never seen a bass that fits so perfect while your standing with the belt and stuff.
the only bad thing is, while your playing and you sit the bass is very uncomfortable, it's a bit sharp.
that's it, sorry for the not so perfect english:D

I amy be a dumbass asking this, I just got interest to learn bass and I don't know much. Is this bass fit to play punk rock songs...?
katsushiro13 1 year ago
@katsushiro13 well it depends. i personaly find Ibanez's extremmely versatile and by having the treble at 9-10 and the bass at 6-8 u can get this realy punchy meaty tone that works wonders for mettal and hard rock but puc=nk u migh want a liitle less treble on it but ibanez makes great basses and i would say buy it man u wont be dissappointed and its only 400$ dude. a steal

I wonder whats sounds better. The Ibanez SR 400QM in this video or the yamaha RBX 374???
delitemyheart 1 year ago
@delitemyheart Ibanez dude, Go for the Ibanez. :-)
clipzngunz 1 year ago
@clipzngunz is the Ibanez really the better bass? The yamaha rbx 374 is made from an alder body, maple neck. I think the ibanez sr 400qm is basswood body. The yammy should have a better tone. But the Ibanez has an awesome neck. Pickup wise i think the yammy must be better..it has active EQ over the ibanez. But i hear that the yammy eats 9volt batteries for breakfast. To be honest, im in love with both these guitars. I dont know which one to buy!
delitemyheart 1 year ago
@delitemyheart you can still get a great tone from an ibanez sdgr, especially the mahogany bodies. some have mahogany bodies. I got an ibanez k5. and not to mention the battery life is very long.
clipzngunz 1 year ago
@clipzngunz yeah well this sr400qm in this video sounds pretty good, i must admit!
I really like the sr700. Have you seen that? Oh its just beautiful. It comes in an amber colour with a maple/bubinga body(i think). And it has bartolini pickups too. I bet that would sound good. They go for around $1200 ozzy bucks here in sydney though. The sr400qm goes for around $650(i think).
I dont know what a k5 is. Is it any good?
delitemyheart 1 year ago
@delitemyheart i recommend it. its the field signature ed mentioned in the middle of vid after he was demonstrating the slap eq. if you know korn thats the bass fieldy uses. its a really awesome bass. light, comfortable and the neck is just fuckin awesome.
clipzngunz 1 year ago
@delitemyheart IBANEZ, I hope you didn't get the Yamaha
yhtomitalmighty 1 year ago
@yhtomitalmighty its funny that you ask cause i just came back from the music shop about an hour ago. I looked at the yamaha rbx 374, and the exact same ibanez as you see in this video. I didnt play any of them..the sales staff were busy with other customers..so i only looked at them. .Man its so hard to decide. The yamaha looks nice and the body is made from alder wood, it must have a good tone. The Ibanez body is basswood..but it still sounds pretty good.
I dont know which one to bloody buy :)
delitemyheart 1 year ago
@yhtomitalmighty at the moment im fumbling around on a Squier P bass. Its Ok..it has a nice fat sound..but i cant get a nice even tone from string to string. And with the tradtional style p bass pickups, i dont have much options to get different kinds of sounds out of it. There is only one volume and one tone control..and thats it. Im just a bit sick of it now. I want to start slappin" now lol.
What do ya reckon..and why???
delitemyheart 1 year ago
@delitemyheart alder wood is really imo the best wood for bass. if you want tone options of course go for a fender jazz instead. i've owned 2 yamahas and its just wasn't i was looking for, i'm a jazz and rock player. personally i like passive more than active too.
you could just buy a fender jazz instead. my favorite bass of all time. i have an american made one and it is the best. i also have an ibanez and i don't know why exactly, maybe its the electronics, but they sound better than yamhas
yhtomitalmighty 1 year ago
@yhtomitalmighty man i love the sound of the fender jazz. Problem is they are bloody pricey here in aust. Also they have so many different models within the fender jazz bass..which one would you buy? I know the american made fender's are the best.
Ive never played a fender Jazz bass before. How is the neck feel on it? Do you reckon its as nice as the ibanez soundgear neck??
delitemyheart 1 year ago
@delitemyheart I recommend to you the Fender Highway One Jazz Bass.
Body made from Alder, Rosewood fretboard, i like it better than maple fretboard. Very versatile bass.
Check it out now. and I know what you mean man, I live in the PI and it's hard to get these kinds of basses here, very expensive too.
yhtomitalmighty 1 year ago
@yhtomitalmighty i checked out the fender highway one jazz bass on the fender web site,,and i think it has to be the best value for money fender j bass on the market. Now you got me drooling over it. Alder body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, badass 11 bridge and get this..alnico vintage pickups. Man what a bass. What more could you want in a bass. I think il have the sunburst finish thankyou!
They retail for $1400 AUD.
delitemyheart 1 year ago
@delitemyheart glad I could help you out man! good luck to your playing and congratulations on your new bass! :)) keep me updated on the bass ok!
