Steve Perry's voice was the creative sun around which the writing and instrumentation circled. Arnel is unabashedly trying to copy that in his approach to Journey's old songs.

At the technical level, Arnel is the better singer but Perry is clearly superior at the creative level. How can you be creative when your entire purpose is to duplicate?

It's with the new songs that we will become able to make a real comparison. Too early to tell now but 'After all these years' is great.

A lot of Journey was mediocre music...but Steve Perry made what they gave him great. Now, they don't have that bit of magic in their back pocket, so the tameness of the music is much more evident.

Neal tries to make things more exciting with his great guitar solos, though...and that helps, but without Perry, it's soooooooo lacking.

I think his voice was doctored in Disc 2 to make him sound as close to the original as possible. He didn't sound raspy and husky. If you re-make why copy? One title "Faith in the Heartland" on the CD of so-called new songs is not really new at all. It was original in their album "Generations" produced in 2005. Much as I support Journey, but their desperation to come up with something big so sudden and so fast just shows how desperate they are surge back to superstardom. They should have planned well and produced better pieces suitable to their current line-up. They will learn eventually.

As far as them redoing that song, it's possible that the rest of the band are trying to pretend that 'Generations' never happened, it really wasn't their high point at all, I think it sucked personally. Arrival was really the next chapter unfolding, but this album sounds like they had more fun, and decided to go back to the basics, I'm pumped for it.

For a Make-A-Wish trip, I got to go to San Francisco and meet these guys while they were working on this album. I heard some of the new songs like "Never Walk Away," "Wildest Dream," and "After All These Years," as well as the re-recorded versions of "Faith in the Heartland" and "Open Arms."
