@ClubbyClubman well then you will love this site... (if you haven't heard of it already that is). Just google "Top Gear Whats that song"... the first link takes you to a forum that lists all the songs by episode and season and minutes into each episode too...
Brings back loads of memories when England was a better place despite the hardships (rationing etc). Bunnies used to come in very handy in a pie, still do.
when we did our WWII Play in March 30th i was an old man and i was the music techian and we played RUN RABBIT RUN AND I WAS THE ONLY PERSON WHO KNEW WHO SUNG IT OUT OF 60 CHILDREN
This song was sung by Chester Goode of Dodge City, in part or in whole in a number of Gunsmoke episodes: RUN RABBIT RUN Run rabbit (run) the dog's will get you. Run rabbit run - you gotta get away. Run rabbit run, the dog's will get you. Run rabbit run - you gotta get away. Oh, the rabbit ran. The rabbit flew. The rabbit tore Its tail in two.
My Gampie would always sing this when he was driving me and my little sister to their house up in Norfolk - I remember he started when we were driving through this little country lane with trees and bushes on either side and he said, "There's rabbits in there, you know? Run, rabbit run, rabbit run, run, run..."
And he would sing it every time we drove down that little lane. :)
Run Rabbit, Run Rabbit, Run Run Run! Bang. Bang! BANG! Goes the farmers gun. So, RUN rabbit! RUN RABBIT! Run Run RUN! I first saw these lyrics in a book, I had no idea it was a song that sounded so.... Cheery. It's awesome.
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! You wouldn't have tHe old version of Little Red Caboose would you? It was "Sparky" and some orchestra. Can not find it.
This song was written for Noel Gay's show 'The little Dog Laughed' which opened in October 1939. Nothing to do with food shortages during the war - it was written before the war began. The song, however, was very popular during the war.
@19smokey19 Actually the song was about the food shortages in the war, when people poached rabbits etc. to get more meat, as it was rationed, along with most other things. But an interesting assumption about POW's/
My father had this on one of his old 78 RPM records. To get me to sleep he brought out the wind up gramophone and play and sing along to this until I was dead to the world. Ah those were the days
My Grandad always used to sing this to me when I was younger everytime I hear it I cant help but smile, Reminds me of him.. Rest In Peace Grandad you where the best! Love you with ALL my heart.xxxxx
Simpler times. I remember hearing this as a child with 'Uncle Mac' childrens fav's. Then again, I was brought up listening to F&A. Loved them then, still do.
WWII anecdote on "Run Rabbit Run" In Nov 1942 the Australian General/Field Marshal Sir Thomas Blamey during parade accused his brave and battered troops who'd just held back the Jap war machine in New Guinea of "running like rabbits" to appease US General Douglas MacArthur. So incensed were the troops that many cocked their rifles and its said he was lucky to escape with his life. Later, visiting injured troops in hospital, even sick soldiers twitched their noses and hummed "Run rabbit Run".
I should add it's a great shame they'd not shot the bastard en mass (difficult to court-marshal a whole brigade). If they had, I'll bet the Oz Government later would never have been game to lie to the people some 20 years later--which it did holus bolus--to commit Australia to the Vietnam war.
'Tis strange how easily a little nonsense song can get caught up in historical events.
@hilbert42 Got to agree with you 100% I live in Australia and Iknow many Vietnam Vtes who are still bitter at the way they were treated. Many also left Australia for other countries due to the inhumane way in which the Government of the day treated them. It was a war that OZ troops should never have got involved in.
@TheAnn2shoes Wiki has some background, type in 'Thomas Blamey' and/or 'running rabbits incident'.
Australia doesn't have a particularly good record when it comes to looking after its troops. To mention just a few: 'The Nek'/Gallipoli/WWI, of course--'Blamey/Rabbits', The 'Voyager' disaster and the 'Vietnam commitment', they're all disgraceful incidents where service personnel have meant less than pawns on a chessboard to their commanders (especially so 'The Nek').
@hilbert42 Sad, but that's probably true in many other countries as well. Even here in the UK there had to be lots of publicity before soldiers got better treatment after leaving or being invalided out of the forces.
... run rabbit run, rabbit run run run!! - if the rabbit was tired, i gotta feed him and made him to sleep, so that he gotta run again when he woke up!! :) :) :)
I thought of this song as I ate Rabbit pie in Haworth at the 1940s weekend. They were serving it up as rationed food on the menu. I had never had Rabbit pie before and i thought it was okay..lol I bet the Rabbit's sighed a relief when the War finished too
This reminds me of my Mum, she was a young teen girl during WW2 London, she use to tell me things and sing some songs of the era, I appreciate now what she use to tell me as a child.
Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run! Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Goes the farmer's gun. Run, rabbit, run, rabbit, run. Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run! Don't give the farmer his fun! Fun! Fun! pprobaly one of the best songs ever Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run! Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Goes the farmer's gun. Run, rabbit, run, rabbit, run. Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run!
I remember listening to this (in the UK) just after the War. I worried terribly about the possibility of the poor little rabbit being killed. As a result ... to this day ... I refuse to eat rabbit ... I'm still a real softy! Greetings to one and all from Jarrahnut (Big Hugh from Mundlimup) in wonderful Western Australia.
@AusGal260469 and you feel for the bunnies. How unAustralian. Greatest pest we ever introduced, worse than cats, prickly pear, canetoads. Destructive horrid creatures!

Now that the fun has begun, gun, gun;
P'raps you'll just allow us to explain,
What we did once, - we can do again.
We're making shells by the ton, ton, ton.
We've got the men and the mon, mon, mon.
Poor old soul, - you'll need a rabbit-hole, -
So, run Adolf, run Adolf, run, run, run.
