in part or in whole in a number of Gunsmoke episodes:

  • RUN RABBIT RUN

  • Run rabbit run,

    the dog's will get you.

    Run rabbit run -

    you gotta get away.

  • Oh, the rabbit ran.

    The rabbit flew.

    The rabbit tore

    Its tail in two.

  • This song was sung by Chester Goode of Dodge City, in part or in whole in a number of Gunsmoke episodes: RUN RABBIT RUN Run rabbit (run) the dog's will get you. Run rabbit run - you gotta get away. Run rabbit run, the dog's will get you. Run rabbit run - you gotta get away. Oh, the rabbit ran. The rabbit flew. The rabbit tore Its tail in two.
  • OH GOD THE MEMORIES!

My Gampie would always sing this when he was driving me and my little sister to their house up in Norfolk - I remember he started when we were driving through this little country lane with trees and bushes on either side and he said, "There's rabbits in there, you know? Run, rabbit run, rabbit run, run, run..."

And he would sing it every time we drove down that little lane. :)

  • im probably the youngest person to watch this at 13, we had to sing this in my year 5 performance, it was fun!

  • This song was written for Noel Gay's show 'The little Dog Laughed' which opened in October 1939. Nothing to do with food shortages during the war - it was written before the war began. The song, however, was very popular during the war.

  • I first heard this song at the Imperial War Museum in London, England. Finally found it by searching Google then YouTube. Thanks for posting.

  • Brilliant song. I have a few oldies in my upload, have a look!

  • yay radio cats

  • great song, is this a pow song, the rabbit the prisnor farmer the nazi ? when most went over the wire...just a though ...

  • @19smokey19 Actually the song was about the food shortages in the war, when people poached rabbits etc. to get more meat, as it was rationed, along with most other things. But an interesting assumption about POW's/

  • Makes you feel proud to be British.

  • Wat a tune

  • I am looking for them singing, Strolling, just Strolling. Anyone know where I can find it please ?

  • Run Adolf, Run Adolf, Run, Run, Run,

    Now that the fun has begun, gun, gun;

P'raps you'll just allow us to explain,

What we did once, - we can do again.

We're making shells by the ton, ton, ton.

We've got the men and the mon, mon, mon.

    Poor old soul, - you'll need a rabbit-hole, -

So, run Adolf, run Adolf, run, run, run.

  • Ah.. I remember when in year 3 my class learnt this song and more songs from WW2. This was my fave and still is.

Run rabbit, run rabbit, run, run, run.

  • My father had this on one of his old 78 RPM records. To get me to sleep he brought out the wind up gramophone and play and sing along to this until I was dead to the world. Ah those were the days

  • Dad sung this to me, I sung it to my kids and now I sing it to my grandchildren!

  • I love vintage music like this.

  • @NunsNBagels So do I. Who cares if I'm in my twenties!

  • Simpler times. I remember hearing this as a child with 'Uncle Mac' childrens fav's. Then again, I was brought up listening to F&A. Loved them then, still do.

  • WWII anecdote on "Run Rabbit Run" In Nov 1942 the Australian General/Field Marshal Sir Thomas Blamey during parade accused his brave and battered troops who'd just held back the Jap war machine in New Guinea of "running like rabbits" to appease US General Douglas MacArthur. So incensed were the troops that many cocked their rifles and its said he was lucky to escape with his life. Later, visiting injured troops in hospital, even sick soldiers twitched their noses and hummed "Run rabbit Run".

  • @hilbert42

I should add it's a great shame they'd not shot the bastard en mass (difficult to court-marshal a whole brigade). If they had, I'll bet the Oz Government later would never have been game to lie to the people some 20 years later--which it did holus bolus--to commit Australia to the Vietnam war.

'Tis strange how easily a little nonsense song can get caught up in historical events.

  • @hilbert42 Got to agree with you 100% I live in Australia and Iknow many Vietnam Vtes who are still bitter at the way they were treated. Many also left Australia for other countries due to the inhumane way in which the Government of the day treated them. It was a war that OZ troops should never have got involved in.

  • @hilbert42 Wow, I've never heard that story. Disgraceful behaviour by the Field Marshal. I'm surprised they never actually shot him.

  • @TheAnn2shoes Wiki has some background, type in 'Thomas Blamey' and/or 'running rabbits incident'.

Australia doesn't have a particularly good record when it comes to looking after its troops. To mention just a few: 'The Nek'/Gallipoli/WWI, of course--'Blamey/Rabbits', The 'Voyager' disaster and the 'Vietnam commitment', they're all disgraceful incidents where service personnel have meant less than pawns on a chessboard to their commanders (especially so 'The Nek').

  • @hilbert42 Sad, but that's probably true in many other countries as well. Even here in the UK there had to be lots of publicity before soldiers got better treatment after leaving or being invalided out of the forces.

  • Now I can tidy the garden to day :) But the sun's gone in already. Oh well. Thanks, I never knew than the chorus of this song before

  • This is so beautifully done, thank you:) I's send it to Tont Blackburn:)

  • runn rabbit runn rabbit run run run haha such a weird song:D

  • this song is so Cute & so Lovely!! I LOVE IT!!

... run rabbit run, rabbit run run run!! - if the rabbit was tired, i gotta feed him and made him to sleep, so that he gotta run again when he woke up!! :) :) :)

    thanks for sharing...!!

  • what tv commercial was this on again

  • @cheesewizerd

It was used in a promo for Victorian tourism.

  • I love this song, it was and still is a morale booster!

  • I thought of this song as I ate Rabbit pie in Haworth at the 1940s weekend. They were serving it up as rationed food on the menu. I had never had Rabbit pie before and i thought it was okay..lol I bet the Rabbit's sighed a relief when the War finished too

  • This reminds me of my Mum, she was a young teen girl during WW2 London, she use to tell me things and sing some songs of the era, I appreciate now what she use to tell me as a child.

  • Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run! Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Goes the farmer's gun. Run, rabbit, run, rabbit, run. Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run! Don't give the farmer his fun! Fun! Fun! pprobaly one of the best songs ever Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run! Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Goes the farmer's gun. Run, rabbit, run, rabbit, run. Run rabbit - run rabbit - Run! Run! Run!
  • THIS IS A CATCHY TUNE

  • I remember listening to this (in the UK) just after the War. I worried terribly about the possibility of the poor little rabbit being killed. As a result ... to this day ... I refuse to eat rabbit ... I'm still a real softy! Greetings to one and all from Jarrahnut (Big Hugh from Mundlimup) in wonderful Western Australia.

  • @Jarrahnut gday from the eastern side, I too love this song, I feel for the poor bunnies too

  • @AusGal260469 and you feel for the bunnies. How unAustralian. Greatest pest we ever introduced, worse than cats, prickly pear, canetoads. Destructive horrid creatures!

  • @backnumber1662

Greatest pest we ever introduced, worse than cats, prickly pear, canetoads.

Then there is pests that Australians discovered like Anna Paquin, Pavlova and the Finn Brothers eh.

  • Thanks for uploading all these old war songs. Great-granddad fought in the war, never knew him....but I'm sure he would have loved this :)

  • i luv this song

  • OMG!! thank you, haven't heard this in forever. Wasn't the flip side 'Little Red Caboose'? I tried to get a good copy for years but never found it.

  • I'm not sure where I first heard this... I think maybe a documentary but ever since that first time I heard it, I can't help but randomly sing it. I find it nice to sing when I'm walking places... But not at night, that would be slightly creepy O_o...^.^...

  • im singing it in my skale show :D

  • I heard this song being sung by some demented bastard in a Z grade horror film and it was the scariest part of the movie. Whoever the villan was, he sang it in a creepy voice while he was looking for the victims and the lyrics certainly lend themselves to the "hunting" scenario. Wish I could remember the name of the film. Thanks for the post.

  • Wow this is prehistoric.

  • its my worst

  • so run rabbit run rabbit run run run!

  • who sings it :O ?

  • lady Gaga o_0

  • lol

  • the song and the first german air raid were not far apart and soon after the lyrics were sometimes changed to "run adolf, run"

  • XD i love this song. i got stuck in my head once i could only think of a rabbit as Hitler running and a farmer shooting his gun at the song plays in my head XD

  • great world war 2 song

  • This song i being played on a commercial for a holiday company I had heard this song in some of the ealing movies this song was popular during wwii.

  • I have my own ideas about this song; it may be 'wrong' but then again there is no such thing as 'wrong'. I would love to hear other people's interpretation of it and what it means to them. Anyone?
