  • like an open-heart massage this is

  • I do like this live version, its great, but one thing stays firmly engrained in my mind. TRIGGER HAPPY TV!!!

  • fucking sexy

  • One of the great performances on the world's best live music show.

  • it sounds like from a CD...cant spot the difference

  • @josefclemens It's definitely live, the vocals don't sound like the recording, some of the scratching isn't in the recording and the guitar sounds different too.

They're not the kind of group to put on a fake show and this show isn't the kind of show to accept fake performances.

  • @LeeJody yeah. i mean this is how great this group is. very clean . the blending of the instruments are just perfect.

  • stills sounds astounding after all these years....

  • when real music was on tv...

  • For some reason, Beth Gibbons turns me on when i see her sing. And i also thinm she might be high or tripping on something cause she looks stoned. Good she's hot.

  • haha yes i love this show!

  • One of the best Live performances i've ever seen

  • I wish I was a bit older and more mature in the 90's so I could've appreciated this music more :( Oh well, It will always be amazing!

  • @davidmckenna96 LOL...you do not need to be old to appreciate Sir Winston Churchill or Madam Gibbons. Just go with it...life is lived in the moment. I am just glad you got to experience this.

Take care and peace to you...

  • Gorgeous and haunting performance. Bellisimo.

  • reminds me of painted on my heart

  • PURE TALent and INSANELY Sexchayyy **__**

looks like in one of her appearances, it's all young adult men; don't see one girl..ha ha:))!! I think she;s awesome:D

  • michael hutchence

  • Damn I was born in 1994..and I love Portishead..and it botters me the fact that now there's no music like that..everything its so dumb and the music nowadays its so stupid like justin beiber, miley cirus and all that shit..don't tell me is the youth..I'm 17 years old AND I FUCKING LOVE PORTISHEAD!!!

  • @LeeJody i hardly think that portishead would sell out like that

  • God i fucking love this song

  • Proof that a woman can be insanely sexy without dressing like a harlot and acting like a spoiled brat. Modern pop stars should take notes.

  • @deutscherjoel But Deborah... Whatever her name is, is definitely NOT a popstar, if she did what Britney Spears does Portishead fans would start burning the albums and vice versa.

They're totally different and while we may think that one is better than the other EG. (one actually has talent) the two cannot be compared, Britney needs to show her body to sell albums, Portishead need to sound good.

  • Proof that a woman can be insanely sexy without dressing like a harlot and acting like a spoiled brat. Modern pop stars should take notes.

  • One of the sexiest tunes of all time

  • beth singing this to you in your room, would be the best thing ever...lol

  • you guys should check this amazing cover /watch?v=bDx97EI_sLc by allison iraheta

  • what a voise

  • The lady who is lead singer of portishead, was said she was a recluse for a long long time, she wouldnt do interviews or anything, she only did live gigs or likes of jools holland, just what i read somewhere but they are one of best bands ever...

  • solid gold.

  • makes me appreciate tricky's homage even more-- this was first yea?

  • Cor, Jules looks young!

  • after nineties, the music is dead

  • @MrKifflom - very true my friend, very true, completely agree!!!!!!!!!!!

  • she doesn't look a day older.

  • yeah portishead, triki, masive attack, and metal of course

  • Excellent.

  • If you compare this video with the recent live version of the same song, you can really hear how her voice has aged. It's just the mercilessness of mother nature. But fortunately, she has soul and I sure hope she'd still be singing when she's 80.

  • Man...in the age where a woman could be merciful is like STAR-TREK to me...I lost all my assets, and I lost my 3-kids due to a pre-STAR-TREK gal. I wish you well Star-Trek gal....

I hope one day...we can both experience life in the same way.

  • sow a little tenderness - no matter if you cry

  • Wow, I get chills. Her voice is pitch perfect even live.

  • shiiiiittt i was in 1994 one year old

  • Beth recreates he album vocals perfectly in every song.. always so perfect

  • i like my slivers out of wood

    and

    shivers delivered first hand

    in a woman's voice

  • 3 assholes were here !

  • EPIC!!

  • Aha,late Michael Hutchence.

Portishead : Best Avant-Garde Hip-Hop group with a Female Voice

  • jools holland long hair!!

  • I already liked the video, once Jools said Portishead.

  • is it just me or the "I just wanna be a woman" part sounds very addictive

  • woow!

  • That's sooooooo great!

  • I didn't know Simon Cowell played bass. Ha.

    Such an amazing song.

  • Oh my god... she sings with such feeling..!! she's really feeling the song..

  • riding so hard on the waves of the bristol sound, bro

  • She exudes and embodies sensuality... No one does it better than her.

  • man! everytime i see this i fall in love with Beth again and again

  • awww yeeah

  • 3 people soooooooo badly sick in the head that not even a miracle cold fix them. how i despise the new conformist radio...

  • beths voice is like pure.....sex

  • people clicked dislike and that threatens my individuality

  • heard the remix/alternate version of this called SCORN?

  • That drummer at 3.19, pure concentration n dedication

  • who the hell clicked dislike for this ?

    just awesome

  • great tune

  • portishead is more than music ... its about feelings ... i have the same strange feeling when iam listening to The Doors ... you cant describe this music in words, its all about feeling ... and now i feel like iam flying

  • Ouch. Michael Hutchence.

  • this performance sucks you in so fast its insane i can't imagine what it would've been like to be sitting in that crowd

  • @mer7389 Great comment. Absolutely.

  • I love this song ! great performance !!! amazing voice...

  • she can't be so rocker!

  • I stand firm for a soil

I lick a rock off foil

    So reduce me, seduce me,

  • Love this song but.......is that simon cowell on the bass? :-)

  • todays charts are shockingly poor,at least we got youtube to keep us happy,

  • This was just broadcasted on ABC in australia last night, couldn't belive it.

  • hauntingly beautiful

  • Awesome performance...thanks for posting! Makes me want to close my eyes and curl up in a ball by myself in the dark :oP

  • Class live singer

  • this is perfection

  • lipstick?

  • Great Song!!!

  • Its sad we live in an age when the mass think that cheryl cole has talent and these guys slip under the net with most people its just insane

  • Bang on

  • @leroybrown1984 I think these slipped under the net at the time, had a large cult following like

  • @leroybrown1984

    agree

  • @leroybrown1984 Eew. I'd never even heard of Cheryl Cole until I read your comment, but you've made your point drastically clear, haha. You're frighteningly correct about today's music.

  • @leroybrown1984 i completely agree. but it almost makes bands like portishead even more special to me.

  • @leroybrown1984 It's not insane really, most people aren't really interested in music so they take anything that gets pushed in their face, doesn't matter to them.

I'm not into top quality food so to me, eating beans on toast everyday seems acceptable, but Gordon Ramsey would consider it unthinkable!

Also if stuff like this was mainstream Simon Cowell would have Portishead working with JLS and that would be a tragedy.

  • @LeeJody That is easily the most insightful comment i've read on this site and i've read alot

  • @LeeJody I'm pretty sure they'd tell Cowell to fuck right off though.

  • @LeeJody that my good sir is a very good analogy. what do you do

  • @joeandjoe2 I go around youtube making sense of things for lesser people that do not understand, that's what I do.

Wherever you find me you will also find sense.

  • The underground is better off underground, makes it a bit more special but some people get snobbish about it. "Oh I like Portishead and Radiohead... You wouldn't understand though". I hate that.

  • @LeeJody Well I like Shpongle and Bluetech... you wouldn't understand though.

  • @herbalist420ganja I like sifting through piles of my own shit to see if I can find some gold, you wouldn't understand though.

  • @LeeJody shit. haha, I didn't see that one coming...

  • @leroybrown1984 you say that, but at the end of the day they've sold millions all over the world, and are internationally known, cheryl cole hasn't sold millions, it just seems that way, anyway, fuck the sheep and what the're up to, we don't need em'.

  • @MURKYDEEP100 That just cheered me up no end! you are so right!

  • @leroybrown1984 No probs mate.

  • @leroybrown1984 Well, you at least you just made me feel good for not knowing who cheryl cole is.

  • A live drummer?

I thought all the drums on the album were sampled...?

  • Check out Clive Deamer. This isn't him playing but Deamer played on most of their stuff (you can see him on their gig with the NY Phil.).

He also played with Roni Size and most recently Robert Plant.

For geeks; the sample (the string part) is taken from an Isaac Hayes track called Ike's Rap II.

    Love this band!

  • yup most people do. amazing drummers are able to create those sounds live.

  • @mAttthhheaLy As far as i'm aware they mostly are... But they always use a live drummer. Drummer in this video is Mig Schillace, but Clive Deemer has played live with them more often.

  • SUCH A SEXY WOMAN!

  • Jools is the parent of so many GREAT performances. There are no coincidences.

  • cant believe this is more than 15 years old... it sounds like something that never would get old!

  • i love very very this song

  • so smooth, so silky, so stunning.

  • Ike's rap :o)

  • pure class. so many groups owe so much to these guys an gals

  • trip hop.!!

  • awesome.

  • Beautiful!!

  • Шреновая шутка...

  • Wasn't this only their second live performance ever? Stunning

  • OMG, Michael Hutchence at the beginning! :O

    AWESOME!!!!

Well, obviously, so is Portishead and this song!

  • I saw EXACTLY the same: Michael Hutchence! Probably very curious about Portishead...

And what a song! Debbie is great...

  • People always talk about Oasis, Nirvana, Blur and Pulp when talking about the ninties, but the likes of Portishead, Radiohead, Bjork, The Manics and The Verve made the ninties the best decade. Them and of course the sega megadrive and pokemon.

  • funny, i`m agree too... 90`s was so creative decade on music, portishead will be unique forever!

  • Don't forget about Massive Attack

  • Of course Massive Attack! I always say that people whentalking about 90 music, and they give me funny looks.

They did a huge amount for electonica then and it's a shame they are still underrated

And the hair they had at the beginng, *facepalm* lol.

  • damn right!

  • Of course I agree with you, but do not forget the other very underrated badass musical scene from the early 90s, desert rock or also loving known as stoner rock. Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Sleep, Yawning Man, etc.

  • @MrRadiospread bloody right, you hit that on the nail,

  • @MrRadiospread Damn son,you hit right on the G spot!

  • @MrRadiospread the bristol sound of portishead and tricky..

  • @MrRadiospread Pearl Jam. ;)

  • @MrRadiospread

People have always talked more about Radiohead than Pulp, as I recall it. And Bjork is certainly better known than Blur, I believe.

  • I was born 1994 :'D

But I'd have loved to have been there ^^

  • I heard this many times on BBC dramas, adverts and whatnot before I knew what the band was. I also lived in Bristol in 1994 - when they were beggining to 'make it big'. The thing is, I didn't know then music until about six months ago.

  • OMG They Followed INXS!!!!

    :D :D :D Awesome.....

  • Almost 15 years ago is scary to think about.

Timeless song, coming from a timeless album.

Nobody does it better Beth. :)

  • for me it was like yesterday my god... i`m getting old but happy to listening music like this...

  • Amazing!! Never heard this song live @ Jools. Really really nice this video exists.

  • Agree

  • I was just a kid back then. 4 years old... I'm do glad to be 90's kid! Best music is from 90's, and that is an fact.

  • Agreed!!

  • i was born when they were recording 'dummy'!!!

it's awesome album, one of my most fav

  • I agree, but I'm not sure it is a 'fact'.

  • chills

  • Increible el video, en ese año apenas tenia 9 años y Portishead ya era lo maximo.

    Tesoro invaluable este video.

  • Holland... my bad

  • woow a very informal Jools Hollanda...

Their live performance impressive as always
