I liked this tutorial. However, when it came to changing the layer colour, you didn't explain how to do it, so I had to ask my tutor how to do it. But I liked the tutorial anyway, and it's helped me with shading and stuff :)
@bimsabio I definitely want to do more tutorials at some point, but right now I've got so much Volume 3 to work on that I know I can't take the time for it. X I Sorry - but, someday, more stuff will pop in!
This is a great tutorial! I learned a lot about shading- thanks. I'm having trouble with the background image however, I keep trying to hold my nose and blink three times but nothing happens!
I'm not understanding. I did everything you said, but when I put the line across the layer, what happens is it acts like an eraser, revealing the original colors below. What am I missing?
In the second half of the tutorial things went a little too fast for me, but I'm sure I'll figure it out if I watch it again and pause the video from time to time. Thanks for making this tutorial.
Another thing, what is the song at the end of it? I liked that song. :D
This helped me so much, thank you. I never really learned much about the other stuff in photoshop, I just self taught myself basic things, and I never really shaded, so this helped me a lot. I thought I'd have to dodge and burn things, this is much better for a beginner step.
this fails for me, i might aswell just get the a paintbrush and draw it on, it doesnt work why does it just look like im drawing colour lines on mine? they dont look shady
LOL. This is great help, and you're pretty darn funny, y'know? I finally understand those dumb adjustment layers now! All I need is a tablet that isn't broken, and I can create some art again...
This was fun, even if it's old. It's funny how the light source comes from behind, but the cartoon light comes form the upper left corner, oh well, it's a cartoon, after all.
this vid was awesome, easy to understand and very helpful, thank you for taking the time to make such a good tutorial. for those who couldn't understand this, it may be to advanced, and they may need to watch some vids about working with layers to understand what they are
im using photoshop elements and i cant find how to do the layer masks and when i do the hue/saturation it changes all the color not just make it that tone im using a mac can anyone help?
@93anrgrysmiles Hmmm... I use a PC and am unfamiliar with Photoshop Elements, so this may not apply. But in the version I use, the layer mask is automatically on the adjustment layer - and even if not, it should be possible to manually add one by going to menu bar, and selecting Layer --> Add Layer Mask. That should let you manually place a mask on any layer you want. 8 )
@offline65 Hello! 8 ) When painting the first shadows, I was using the paintbrush tool, in black and white on the layer mask of the adjustment layer. But the tool itself was just the paintbrush tool. 8 )
@93anrgrysmiles Photoshop Elements does not have Layer Masks. It only has the Adjustment Layer tool, but does not off the Layer Masks option. There's apparently a way to fake, or trick, Elements into the Layer Masks option, because Elements does support Masked Layers but does not off ther the Layer Masks option. A quick google should give a tutorial for this trick.
@93anrgrysmiles i dont have elements but in photoshop there is a button at the bottom of the layer window which is a square with a circle in it that's for applying a layer mask. to change the hue just select the areas where you want the huse to be changed and then do it. hope it helped :-)
How do you colour the sections within the lines without using the magic wand tool on the original artwork, and paint them without colouring over the edges?
@unkle73 It's a simple little secret - I don't have to color on the original artwork at all, so there's no need to make any selections on that layer. I do all the coloring on a completely new, empty layer in Photoshop. The new color layer is placed underneath the original art, or what I call the 'lines layer.' Then you just change the blending mode of the lines layer to 'multiply', and bingo - you can see the colors underneath it like magic. 8 )
Wow, after 7 years of using Adobe Photoshop I never took the time to learn the method of MASKING. Because of this incredibly entertaining and visually appealing tutorial it motivated me to check it out and practice this technique. Thank you so much David, an awesome video tutorial indeed on shading. *thumbs up and heads off to practice*
Please help me! Whenever I try to colour over some already coloured parts of an image, it replaces it with a lighter colour??? Is there something I have done wrong with my multiply options? I have a line layer, and a layer for colouring in. Hope you can help me (or someone else).
@stianshit Sorry I'm so slow on here... Anyways, there are a ton of things that could be going on in photoshop... The paintbrush tool has a blending mode too - when it's not normal, if it gets switched to 'lighten' or something, it could be doing that. Or even if the color layer has it's blending mode accidentally set to lighten or screen or something. I would start a new file with just one color layer, and make sure your blending modes are normal, and then experiment with fewer variables.
@wisemage0 Limited gadgets over here - I actually had to record my voice on a 5-year-old banged up digital camera in 20-second video chunks, because that's all the video it could take! My next tutorial I'm hoping to get some better sound quality, when that eventually happens. E \
@WickedSoulXD Just using the paintbrush tool should do it - once you've got the Adjustment Layer there, make sure you're 'inside' the layer mask, and you should be able to paint in grayscale everywhere. 8 )
@TheCodingProductions yeah right lol most animals like most ppl have brown eyes, a face can express emotions, not eye color...i dont know why white ppl are so afraid to put brown eyes on a cartoon it wont make them any less attractive
@44eelz well, brown eye colors make them look more in the background, blending in with the crowd. Most of the time the main character has blue eyes. I never said eye color expresses emotions, eyes mainly express who the character is. Kind of like in real life, you don't see many people with blue, red, green, or yellow eyes, you mostly see brown.
@TheCodingProductions thats just bullshit, man. most of the time the character has blue eyes cuz most of the artists who draw them are white, i love all people. but your implying that a person with brown eyes cant be a main characterm, let alone a black character, do you think their dark skin makes them even less deserving to be in the limelight ? i hope not.
@44eelz Huh? Are you applying me as being racist? What I said is my opinion from what I know and see of characters... there is no need to start flame war, not now.
@TheCodingProductions im saying what ur implying sounds racist...if were talking animals, that makes even LESS sense to choose caucasian eye color for them to "stand out" more and not be in the background, it still sounds like you prefer blue eyes over brown, ya know, not everyone feels this way.
@lalu2222 I'm glad the tutorials were helpful! 8 ) Hopefully I can continue the trend - there are two basic things to adjust on the Hue/Saturation effect. First, there are the settings of the effect itself - double click on the layer to make that window pop up, and then you can shift the hue, chroma, etc. with the slider bars. The second is the layer mask and opacity of the entire effect layer, and that can be changed by clicking on the little layer mask icon and filling it with gray shades
This actually makes a lot of sense for a beginner, I've been trying to find a good method for ages now and the idea of adjustment layers (hue and saturation) never came to mind. So I gotta say thanks guys you're helping out a lot!
HOnestly: Thanks! This was the best coloring tutorial I've ever seen:) I've been looking a lot in to making colors belivable, not realistic, this was exactly waht I needed:)
@slykeener It might take some practice getting used to - I probably make it look quite a bit easier than it is, since I've been at it for years. If you keep experimenting and practicing though, you'll be able to develop something that works for you. 8 )
@jasonzao777 To get the layer mask grey, the first step is to make sure you're 'in' the layer mask, and not the normal part of the layer. Try painting with red - if you can paint red, you're not in the layer mask, because that's grayscale only. Click directly on the little layer mask square in the layers window. Then, just choose a grey color, and paint it in with the paintbrush - and voila! 8 )
@mokonarules To get the layer mask grey, the first step is to make sure you're 'in' the layer mask, and not the normal part of the layer. Try painting with red - if you can paint red, you're not in the layer mask, because that's grayscale only. Click directly on the little layer mask square in the layers window. Then, just choose a grey color, and paint it in with the paintbrush - and voila! 8 )
@slykeener The lines layer is basically the drawing that I made outside the computer. I drew a picture, scanned the drawing in, and then put that scanned image on a layer in photoshop. Then, since it's the lines I drew, I simply label it the 'Lines' layer. 8 )
what if you've already outlined the picture before you added it to photoshop? can you still make the outlines look better and still do all of this other stuff?
@slykeener Definitely, I think! 8 ) Once in Photoshop, you can manipulate any image to do just about anything you want - once you get the basic techniques down, it becomes possible to start applying them to any layers or images that you wish. And of course, there are hundreds and hundreds of other techniques in photoshop which I'm not even familiar with. So whatever your visual goal, there's almost always a path to get there!
Very nice. I normally use more layers for shades and highlights, which can make stuff look pretty realistic. But I never thought about giving the shadow a color, and I never used Adjustment Layers. I created new layers and made them all black with a transparency of 30%, and then created the shades by editing the mask. It's a real pain, but when you have 20+ hours to waste for shading, it can give some nice results.
@0Artist0 Actually, it can be easy to accidentally paint on the layer itself, and not the layer mask. In the Layers toolbar, be sure to actually click right on the little square icon of the layer mask - it should then be outlined a little more heavily than the actual layer. Another way of checking if you're no the masking level or not is that the masking level can only paint in graytones. So if you try painting red, and you can actually paint red on anything, you're no longer on the mask.
BIG thumbs up. So many tutorials I've watched recently are just the artist commentating about what they're drawing, nothing about what tool they've just created the amazing effect with, or anything remotely useful. Thank you for this!
@dodd132 The drawing in the tutorial is of Mace - I don't think the picture has a specific title, but that's the character displayed. I hope this helps answer your question. 8 )
@dreamkeeperscomic i searched on deviant art for " Mace " in cartoons and googled " Mace cartoon character " and didnt find the image could you provide a link ?
could anyone tell me how, if i draw an image on paper and then scan it in, you get the lines so crisp looking, without seeing all the scratches that seem to be on the outside of the lines? i usually just add a sharpen and artistic filter, but it doesnt help.
@raztis1 The thing that really helps me out is to use non-photo blue pencils for the first sketch of the drawing - they're pencils that draw in a really light blue line. Then I use a sharp regular pencil to carefully draw the final lines on top. This reduces the sketchiness by a lot. Plus, to keep the drawing from smudging as I go, sometimes I rest the palm of my drawing hand on a folded piece of paper, so it doesn't drag directly on the pencil lines. Hope this might be helpful. 8 )
@SondreThaGamer Hmm... I couldn't honestly tell you - I've only used Photoshop 7 extensively, I've never had much experience with the newer ones. They probably have some upgraded features that could be helpful - hopefully some people a bit more in the know could guide you through the differences between them. Sorry I can't be more helpful. <8 )
Very impressive! It's almost too daunting to think about all the possible ways to do something in Photoshop, but you tutorial just made a light go on above my head. Thanks alot!
@Lizzardman666 Definitely - and actually, that technique would give you more flexibility with using different colors on that layer. The stuff in this tutorial is fairly basic, so there are lots of ways to elaborate or accomplish the same effect. 8 )
Hey Dave. I'd just like to know if you scanned your line art in black and white or in color. From what I saw it looked like you scanned it in color. Does this have an effect on the way you color?
Thank you, I'm glad that this came in helpful! 8 D The version of Photoshop I use is 7.0, a bit out of date... I assume that these techniques and more would be available in newer editions of the software, though. : )
What version is this? 7.0 did you say? Im wanting photoshop for christmas but i dont know which one to get. I dont want to pay for it then find out it doesnt come with what i want it to do, which is this sort of stuff. is photoshop elements 8 good? CS4 seems a little over my price budget tho lol
Where can i download the disgruntledcleese plugin for gimp?

mine not working right. It's shading when it's not supposed to
slykeener 1 year ago
@slykeener It might take some practice getting used to - I probably make it look quite a bit easier than it is, since I've been at it for years. If you keep experimenting and practicing though, you'll be able to develop something that works for you. 8 )

i cant fill the layer mask with gray y not
jasonzao777 1 year ago
@jasonzao777 To get the layer mask grey, the first step is to make sure you're 'in' the layer mask, and not the normal part of the layer. Try painting with red - if you can paint red, you're not in the layer mask, because that's grayscale only. Click directly on the little layer mask square in the layers window. Then, just choose a grey color, and paint it in with the paintbrush - and voila! 8 )

what's the line's layer
slykeener 1 year ago
@slykeener The lines layer is basically the drawing that I made outside the computer. I drew a picture, scanned the drawing in, and then put that scanned image on a layer in photoshop. Then, since it's the lines I drew, I simply label it the 'Lines' layer. 8 )

This is very helpful when your beginning in Digital Painting. Small things work wonders. Thanks for the vid.

what if you've already outlined the picture before you added it to photoshop? can you still make the outlines look better and still do all of this other stuff?
slykeener 1 year ago
@slykeener Definitely, I think! 8 ) Once in Photoshop, you can manipulate any image to do just about anything you want - once you get the basic techniques down, it becomes possible to start applying them to any layers or images that you wish. And of course, there are hundreds and hundreds of other techniques in photoshop which I'm not even familiar with. So whatever your visual goal, there's almost always a path to get there!
dreamkeeperscomic 1 year ago
"You'll be needing some Bob Ross" xD.
Nice video editing!

But how do you draw on the layer mask? How do you know you are working on the mask and not just working on the selected layer?
0Artist0 1 year ago
@0Artist0 Actually, it can be easy to accidentally paint on the layer itself, and not the layer mask. In the Layers toolbar, be sure to actually click right on the little square icon of the layer mask - it should then be outlined a little more heavily than the actual layer. Another way of checking if you're no the masking level or not is that the masking level can only paint in graytones. So if you try painting red, and you can actually paint red on anything, you're no longer on the mask.
dreamkeeperscomic 1 year ago
@dreamkeeperscomic Ok, thank you I will be sure to watch for that.
0Artist0 1 year ago
BIG thumbs up. So many tutorials I've watched recently are just the artist commentating about what they're drawing, nothing about what tool they've just created the amazing effect with, or anything remotely useful. Thank you for this!

Whats that image called i want to follow the video fully ?
dodd132 1 year ago
@dodd132 The drawing in the tutorial is of Mace - I don't think the picture has a specific title, but that's the character displayed. I hope this helps answer your question. 8 )
dreamkeeperscomic 1 year ago
@dreamkeeperscomic i searched on deviant art for " Mace " in cartoons and googled " Mace cartoon character " and didnt find the image could you provide a link ?
dodd132 1 year ago
could anyone tell me how, if i draw an image on paper and then scan it in, you get the lines so crisp looking, without seeing all the scratches that seem to be on the outside of the lines? i usually just add a sharpen and artistic filter, but it doesnt help.
raztis1 1 year ago

Instead of making a seperate HSB adjustment layer and masking it, couldn't you have created a normal one and used a multiply brush?
Lizzardman666 1 year ago
@Lizzardman666 Definitely - and actually, that technique would give you more flexibility with using different colors on that layer. The stuff in this tutorial is fairly basic, so there are lots of ways to elaborate or accomplish the same effect. 8 )

Hey Dave. I'd just like to know if you scanned your line art in black and white or in color. From what I saw it looked like you scanned it in color. Does this have an effect on the way you color?
