You need to anesthetize the fruit-flies so that you can view their undersides (this is how you tell makes and female apart) clearly and then separate your males and females, however be careful if you separate your males and females they will not be able to reproduce and they will of course eventually die
Did you purchase the courtship container or make it? Either way I would appreciate reference or more info. Do you have greater success in making such observations if the female is a virgin and early in the morning?
Just watching my apterous flies, they have a similar behavior with the shuffling back and forth, with pauses for wing vibrations and everything, but lack the wings to make any noise with.
I added three wild flies to see what would happen, and the two wild males beat up the smaller apterous males, although the single wild female allows the smaller apterous males to mate with her.

I watched my culture of Drosophila for an hour straight waiting for this, and nothing.
Thank God for YouTube.

You know, considering how short thier lifespan is, 20 minutes of copulation is actually a pretty good chunk of time... lol

D. melanogaster is not fruit fly.
that fly is different. is not a plague
romanovalpo 2 years ago
It is commonly referred to as "fruit fly" in the scientific community, but it actually eats the yeast from rotting fruit, not the fruit itself.

I'm quite certain male fly was playing Barry White with his wings."bzzz" "Can't get enough of your love babe..." "bzzz" "bzzz"
