2 years ago, i bought an old Kombi vw , i made a kind of bed inside, my guitar, my two little boys, and we left home, i crossed my whole country without any roadmap, just driving on the small roads, we listened to the cd of eddie vedder,
When i listen these songs now, i have all those memories that come into my mind.
i think that if I could, I would have found a bigger truck and never came back home,
Just keep on moving and live the most possible in the nature,

He screwed up and in the end no longer though of himself as the free-spirit Alex Supertramp.
Lots of young people run and hide from their dysfunctional families. Many have use drugs and alcohol as an escape / adventure, sometimes with deadly consequences.
This guy used cross country travel and societal abandonment as his drug. He basically overdosed on some delusional notion that he could live a poetic solitary life in the wild unprepared. Sad but true.
Love the movie, absolutely brilliant. For people who'have already read the 'Into the Wild' and were interested, read tolstoi, that man thought of some great ideas back then.
I was just writing a song the other day about people in general, the way people conduct themselves in the society on a daily basis, then I started feeling a little unsettled about it for no certain reason and left the song incomplete. So I was just wondering if someone would pm me a sentence starting with "Everyone...." and I will look at it.

Watch "Brother Son; Sister Moon" and "Francis of Assisi". He, St. Francis, did something similar, but was more productive for society. He taught people to not need ego, rageful anger (just anger being OK, if charitably applied) and other worldly stuff and hang-ups. Life is much easier when put in God's hands, though it doesn't mean to do nothing and wait for your needs to come to you like manna.
@anathemapariah because some people appreciate the real story/origins of such masterpieces . . . Does it really matter? No, just a courtesy for artists and music lovers. I personally feel that Jerry Hannan's vocals exude more emotion in his version. Eddie is a vocal genious yes, but the song takes on a different power with Jerry's vocals...it's these sublties that some appreciate knowing...
these are the types of songs needed to be played. I know that it might not be everyones thing but the meaning is so important in this song. It has to much beauty to pass up.
Good soldiers die on the field of battle quenching the needs of fat politicians greed .. Sensitive men die in the wilderness because the injustice is overwhelming.Praise be The Lord is near,
and...how many sit silent while it is more true that the people are the government, they represented and reflected by "fat politicians". this problem of 'war' is a human problem, and its name is ignorance, and ignorance in its fear is represented and reflected by arrogance. neither are without their fair share in it. and yes...Praise be The Lord is nigh...always and in all ways.
great lyrics presented by an incredible voice. Chris had no responsibilities, for us that do leaving society isn't possible. Perhaps changing it is... Wonder how much I can give away before my day.
well... since im portuguese and my political ideology is something that lies between a woman`s legs the two first you mentioned mean nothing to me... concerning the third... the eighties are long gonne :D... about vedder, vedder is a presence, a voice that you listen all the time in your mind and in your heart... a voice taht surrounds you all day long whispering in your ear : "beauty exists and its out there.. go ... go and search for it... " ... vedder makes you believe...
Actually that would be Neil Young...Eddie would agree himself, but I do love Eddie. I've wished he would release a solo folk album like this forever...I wish he would break away from Pearl Jam and put out music like this. He has that genuineness that Neil Young has and that voice of his is so elegant...
That's wrong, Jerry and Ed wrote it together while doing the soundtrack to into the wild. I think Jerry wrote most of the song but it was made for the film and id call it as much as a eddie vedder song as a jerry hannan song. It's not a cover atleast.
You mean Jerry and Eddie sat down together and wrote the song? But Jerry wrote 'most' of the words? I don't think so. Where are you getting this info? Yes, McCandless was ill prepared. Yes, he probably was a city boy who underestimated what it takes to survive in the wild.
However, you who criticise the film and McCandless for this have totally missed the point. Into the Wild is not Survivorman or a special forces training video.
You people need to mature emotionally to appreciate McCandless and the film.
McCandless was perhaps a naive idealist. That does not make the story less beautiful.
"Probably underestimated" is an understatement. The very society from which he was running was a kid's playground compared to nature's cruel, cold and harsh treatment to those who do not know how to live within her limits! Utopia does NOT exist and he learned the hard way. Anyway, the only beautiful things about the movie are the soundtrack and the fact that the ones he selfishly left behind grieving for him get to experience him again and again, albeit via celluloid.
Well said. People bitch about the movie saying "this didn't happen / that didn't happen ...". So what ? It's a movie - not The Gospel Story of Chris McCandless. And it's a beautiful movie. And for all the people who call him an idiot etc. - how many of them will be remembered ? How many would have the balls to do turn their back on society, prepared or not ...
i totally agree janrlf. there are a few really deep and meaningful messages to take from this movie. and i also agree that critisizing mccandless is to miss the point. the point being that he lived the way he actually wanted to, the way that he thought HE should live. not the way that everyone around him thought he should live. i bet he was truely happy bfore he fell ill. how many of use have the nerve to pursue happiness with such passion.
@janrlf the film portrays him as this romantic, motivated, driven man. when in reality it is quite possible that he was an ill person, i have heard claims that he showed symtoms of a schizophroenic personality. Having read the book, you see that there really is nothing romantic about what he did, and that his greatest motivator was fear.
@getz21 At least, he did what he wanted and has inspired to a lot of people about what he did. And us, what will we do as a volunteer for this community?
@janrlf He went out there to kill himself. He was angry at his parents. It is a tragic story, but he wasn't stupid he knew if he was not prepared then he would struggle. He knew what he was doing.
@janrlf Very well put. I have felt this way my whole life. I have lived in 18 cities and 5 states and can't stop moving, and can't stand ownership of anything. A free spirit in a heavy world.
@janrlf he may not have been fully prepared but he was told nobody could survive 'till spring, and what did he do? he survived over a year nd a half on his own in the wild. i think he was pretty well prepared, and he knew it would be rough
@shrimpy punk He arrived in the Alaskan wild in April of 1992 and died the following August. He lasted approximately 113 days.
Chris was just some arrogant, ignorant immature mentally ill young man. Too bad he did not seek out all the great philosophies of the world. Had done this he may have realized that the ancient east holds a wealth of great wisdom.
He could have known the difference between relative happiness and absolute happiness. Absolute freedom, justice and health.
the most awful part is that right when he realized that he didnt want to be so isolated, he got poisoned and started dying...........that movie makes me almost cry
@janrlf McCandless may have been from the city but he knew what he was doing or else he would have died 3 days after treking out into the alaskan wild. He survived 113 days out there. He knew what he was doing. He just a very poor mistake by eating those berries.
@risingpower189 It wasn't even that they were the wrong kind of berries. after the film came out, they found out that the berries had a mold on them and that's what they think killed him.
It's good to see an enlightened person discussing an artist which they seem to have a great understanding of (note the sarcasm... I understand it doesn't work so well over the internet)
This song and especialy this movie is one of a kind!!! It gives you a lot themes which you better have to think about. You are not you`re fathers son and not you`re mothers doughter...you are always youreself!!!

I really do enjoy the music but am skeptic in regards to the lyrics since pearl Jam's do the evolution song lyrics.
The music is great and the words if dwelled upon might be interesting, but I ain't going there no more. Just music for me. Bye Eddie Vedder lyrics.
The Rise lyrics on the other hand are good.
How I see it is that society is good. It's good to be in sync with it to a certain degree. Fulfill you obligations, be a human being and on your free time it's your business.
Love Vedder, he's great... singer... awesome voice. but get real people, chris had good intentions but he went about it all wrong. Right motivations, hey I don't like the way things are going either, but you don't see me trying to learn how to breath underwater and then dive to the bottom of the ocean with no scuba gear and wonder why I can't breath and drown
Me too except i may just travel. when i run out of money Into the wild at that point. may bring a suit case of drugs cause im retarded, and a stock of food. ill be close to society to get like fruits from the grocery stores. fuck college.
Spoken like a true non producer - lemme guess, when you get sick and die, you'll blame it on society and the producers in the world rather than your own stupidity
why don't you make your pilgrimage to the volcanoes of hawaii. Make sure not to bring any heatshields. Also, make sure to not learn, or maybe forget all you know about boiling hot lava and what it does to people. Just bring a sleeping back and a lucky rabits foot. Find some bus to sleep in nice and close to one of the active ones... I hear they're pretty hungry for more idiots.
Great movie. My step-father read the book. One thing it doesn't mention in the movie, is that the guy didn't know that there was a ranger station like a mile and a half down stream. He could've live to tell of it all in person!
into the wild , so good and you dont realise how good it is untill you go to work the next day and watch people doing ther routine!!! hope this helps please let me know

Well, i just wanted to add, What is said at the end of the story is so true,
Happiness is true only if it is shared.
I travelled with what is the most precious to me, my little boys.
All the nice landscapes i've seen were ten times nicer 'coz i could see them in their eyes too, and their happiness make everything more beautiful.
I think, you always shoud share nice things you live with s.o. else

@janrlf McCandless may have been from the city but he knew what he was doing or else he would have died 3 days after treking out into the alaskan wild. He survived 113 days out there. He knew what he was doing. He just a very poor mistake by eating those berries.
risingpower189 5 months ago in playlist Ryan Bingham, Crazy Heart, Weary Kind
@risingpower189 It wasn't even that they were the wrong kind of berries. after the film came out, they found out that the berries had a mold on them and that's what they think killed him.

It's good to see an enlightened person discussing an artist which they seem to have a great understanding of (note the sarcasm... I understand it doesn't work so well over the internet)
samdaman008 2 years ago
Absolutely, and every artist has the right to evolve in their craft.
