This version is better than the one on Remain in Light and better than the one on The Name of This Band is Talking Heads but the studio version of The Great Curve is better than both the live version and this song.
after watching several videos of this concert i have come to two conclusions. 1. Adrian Belew is some kind of genius and i need to just plain rob his ideas.
2. I need to find a high quality recording of this to enjoy it in maximum vibe, is there one????
This core band is on Remain in Light and other solo stuff... Tom Tom Club My Life in the Bush of Ghosts....maybe Catherine Wheel...... Not much music like this is out there........David Byrne was very forward thinking...
I used to scoff at guitarists who obsessed over their fx, but after listening to how Belew used them in this concert to add to the atmosphere of the music, I'm starting to appreciate their potential.
I'm not sure if this is the exact version but if you purchase "The Name of this Band is the Talking Heads" album, but make sure you get the double disc special expanded edition, then I believe it has most of the Remain in Light performed live on it. It is worth it.
It's not. The one on Name is tighter than this IMO. And yeah definitely get the expanded version double disc. The Born Under Punches and Big Country cuts are worth the price of admission alone.
@wreckingKREW1 yeah it has a lot of performances from the same tour. i do love TNOTBITH but for some reason this performance of born under punches has some quality to it that the name version doesn't have. they're both very good, but this one for some reason to me has another layer of paranoia and mysteriousness that I can't quite describe. it might not be as tight, but for some reason this version is more emotional to me. also the color tones in the video are perfect for this song imo.
Yes, it is Adrian Belew, a very underrated guitarist...I first knew about him when he played guitars and sung on Frank Zappa's SHEIK YOURBOUTI album. Then he joined Talking Heads and there were rumours that he would replace David Byrne since the band wanted him to get rid of. But it didn't turn that way and Belew went to front the new KING CRIMSON in 1981.
I was blessed to see a good few of the gigs on this tour....every night was amazing...a truely brilliant band and line up. Lovely people with a lovely vibe..good times for me X
can't stop watching this. is there a a link to download the performance as an mp3? i'd like to steal Byrne's look, but i think it would look kind of schizophrenic without the guitar.
This is so retardedly good. If something this good came out today we'd all have heart attacks. I'm not one for nostalgia, but seriously, can anyone name one thing that's come out in the past 5 years that even approaches this? That will be listened to for decades to come?
@elo333333333 Uh, singer for Radiohead. Great band. Kid A, one of my all-time favorite albums. Talking Heads during this period would blow them away as a live band.
@vargaso Arcade Fire- The Suburbs LCD Soundsystem- This Is Happening/ LCD Soundsystem (Don't be a dick about this one) Kayne West- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy And if you want to go to the past 10 years Daft Punk- Discovery Arcade Fire- Funeral The White Stripes- Elephant, Icky Thump, White Blood Cells The Strokes- Is This is, Rooms on Fire Arctic Monkeys- Debut Album Bon Iver- For Emma, Forever Ago Radiohead- Kid A, In Rainbows Foo Fighters- Well... anything by them... So, there you go.
@vargaso theres good stuff out there but its just not maybe that mainstream. instead of everyone complaining all the time they should seek out bands like Wilco, Grizzly Bear, Beach house - good music isnt THAT far underground
@spick1923 Ha - totally agree. I'd take the machine to see all the bands that were before my time and I missed. Would pay a lot to see these guys in their prime. Were definitely ahead of their time.
That annoys you? I think he's doing just enough. Like you said 'great live version'. Part of the reason its so great is Belew's outlandish guitar attempts. I think its perfect.
Adrian Belew at this point starts to irritate the fuck out of me. Glad they didn't invite him back for their last tour, he was too busy ripping off Byrne in King Crimson anyway.
@cactaceous they actually invited him to replace Byrne but he declined, and he also worked on the tom tom clubs and Harrison's album. Tina and Chris didnt give him writing credit for his work so i doubt he had any plans of continuing to work with them (Chris and Tina that is). And his style is completely his own saying he ripped of David Byrne just because he sounds like him is stupid. He worked on the album that this is the tour for and his work on that album is fucking amazing so fuck off.
This is a true story: I spent many years of my childhood's summers in a very tiny hamlet sized town in Utah: there were 197 people lived there and 98% of the families' names were FUNK. Promise, a true story. T Hs is the only funk.....
@talkingbeatlehead I saw Talking Heads live and this concert from Rome is still the best concert I've ever seen! Gang of Four comes pretty close - Andy Gill gets some crazy feedback funk out of his guitar, too!
@bluesbrrd Well i guess i didnt see it live but i watched it online. But its still best. Your lucky you saw the Talking head live they are my second favorite band.
What a unique voice David Byrne has...and such a lyrical ability. He admitted himself he doesn't always write words to make sense but when I read them they always make perfect sense to me. Just in an abstract way
I don't think I've ever heard two bass guitars work so well together. Tina's creepy atmospheric vibe mixes so well with the other guy's (anyone know his name?) funk thumping and slapping. :)
