WOW. So much respect. She's not only on top of her tapping game here, as she always was, but she mastered an entirely new style of dancing that was not of her generation. Most would have looked awkward at best, but Ann looks like she could hang alongside Ann Margret and Nancy Sinatra with her 60s moves!
She's awesome!!! I've ALWAYS loved her, but never saw her dance to anything like this!!! Too cool! & G O R G E O U S!!!!!!!!!!!<3 Mind you, horribly underrated because she refused to whore herself out!!!!!
I wish this was clearer. She must have been late 40s or early 50s when she did this ... jeez! Ann was my cousin ... the dance genes live on in my family, for sure!
one can only imagine the hours or practice she endured to put on an amazing performance like that. And to think she did this for many many years at a high standard of perfection when she was not a young woman. She was simply amazing, and this number is a hoot, gogo boots and all.
She was keeping up with the times...at the time, which was the 60s. BTW: She got her first break from Ginger Rogers in the 1937 film, "Stage Door". She was just 16, and Ginger, soon to be the biggest star in Hollywood, thought she was too tall....Ginger was only 5-41/2 and 105 lbs. To her credit, she hired her anyway...and the pair did a charming tap dance routine in the film. Miller was a great tap dancer...one of the best...which is not on display in this particular dance.
I didn't know that. Lucille Ball was in Lela's (Ginger's mother) acting school at RKO. So it makes sense that she discovered Ann Miller...and it was nice of Ginger to then hire her. Rogers and Ball remained friendly all their lives...and GR was in several of Ball's TV shows too...just as Lucy was in "Follow the Fleet" with Ginger. Ginger and Lucy were among the most accessible and friendly of actresses to her fellow performers...and also in general, to the people they came in contact with.
Every single performance on film or television by a tap dancer (including Astaire, Rogers, Kelly, etc) -- even though the dancers were tapping, the taps were re-dubbed or "looped" in after filming. In fact, most of Ginger Rogers taps were looped by Astaire's assistant, Hermes Pan.
The tapping is real. If you are a tap dancer, you will know that you can move about without tapping. Watch the video again, and maybe you will note how she is moving when not tapping.
@Josef395 True, one can move about without tapping, but the taps were dubbed in later on almost all television shows, and certainly in all of the old movie musicals. Doesn't make her work any less fantastic. Even Astaire and Rogers taps were dubbed in later...
HAHA yep, I especially love the scene where she dances with Bob Fosse, Bobby Van, and (I could be wrong, Michael Kidd?). That is almost MY favorite part of the movie. Well, let us not forget "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" I cannot decide which scene I love more! Just the hair thing as it went on and on and on - I am female - I just thinks she better looking in longer hair. I KNOW it was her trademark. Obviously a smart and savvy show BUSINESS lady LOL! SMILES love it.
I can see what you mean (I love that scene too) but this is just too modern. I guess what i don't like is the transition from Hollywood to the Variety Hour of some washed up actor. Wow. Hair is making me sad. hah. Don't get me wrong, i do have a life, but when i see this it's just..you know....I want to hold on to that old Ann Miller
Wow, I feel like I just came off an acid trip, man! But I have to agree with "machine" I like her hair better like this. I never did like that bouffanty, flip thing she always wore even into old age. But I grew up when straight hair was the thing. Where is this from? P.S. I LOVE Kiss Me Kate too. Dig it baby.
what are you talking about?!?!? I LOVE taht bouffant of hers!!! it was like a freaking explosion of Golden Age Glamour!!! and that movie was Too Darn Hot

I agree, Ann Miller was underrated. I don't remember her from the old days at all. I know her only from Youtube!

I read that she was discovered by Lucille Ball, who's also in "Stage Door", at a club that she was working at.

Let's assume for a moment that the tapping is real. Can someone tell me how she turned the taps off for the beginning of the dance?

Interesting. I never knew Ann Miller did this kind of stuff.
She was always a great dancer, no matter what the era or style of music.

RAD MAN. How did they do those special effects with the graphics on the people?
BigBirdy100 3 years ago
BigBirdy,
It's probably greenscreen or bluescreen. The dancers are wearing green or blue body suits, and that's replaced with the effects.

Oh my God...!
I never knew about this...
And I am one of Annie's biggest fans.
Fabulous -and oh so funky - groovy - hot
