Same difference, really. Usually when it's carrying audio you call it an XLR and when it's carrying digital lighting info you call it a DMX, just silly semantics, it really doesn't matter that much.

Not 100% true. A mic or XLR cable will work fine to carry dmx signal, but don't use dmx cables to plug in a mic. dmx cables don't have the proper shielding that a mic cord has, it will introduce a lot of buzz into a p.a. if used to carry audio signal.

@treversmith72 not to mention the extra 2 pins a DMX has to an XLR :P, pins 4 and 5 on a dmx cable arnt really used any more thats why it can be reduced to a 3 pin xlr.

@Sezualchocolate it matters dmx cable may be the same plug BUT dmx cable has braided insulation and is made to carry data not audio

Here is a tip.. Dont think there are people dancing or watching you while you are the DJ.. Just aim on doing a great mix ;-) I was shy to but when i first got behing the mixer and the players then i fellt like home :-) PS: DJ'ing have been my childhood dream from when i was around 7 years old but couldnt start DJ before i was 15 (Present day) cuz the club in my town was closed for a looong time but now its open ^^

I've been a mobile DJ for about a decade, jvc85, and that is very good advice to upstarts. Just concentrate on your mix, relax and enjoy. People sense fear and frustration easily, if you're having a good time, your crowd will too.

i belive that originally dmx cables were 5 pin wernt they?? before my first gig 10 years ago anyway lol

i was told by a dealer that they started using 3 pin cables (dmx or xlr) to keep the costs of manufacture down.

i know my laser has a 5 pin dmx control lead,

nowdays most lights just have as 3 pin xlr socket for dmx/link leads,

is their a difference between xlr leads and proper dmx leads cable shrouding, i would have thought so

all uk kit is 240v so you will need to get a converter, these can be bought from Radio shack at about $45 each. j
