One of the greatest things about jazz as a genre is the amount of freedom involved! I never get bored collecting different performances of these guys wailing on this wonderous piece, because the essence of jazz is never having to play a tune the same way twice! Check Joe Morello's solo here - it is a completely amazing reinvention of the famous one on the Time Out album - Dave and Paul also do the same in more subtle ways!!
Music and musicians in general have always been intergrated racially way ahead of civilization because of all the styles , forms of music so interesting, music overcomes all race borders. We could say Love in the form of music bonds the attraction of color and culture.
i love the style and the mutual respect they show, dave turned around to watch joe's solo and he even forgot to enter right after he finished it...so into it... just brilliant
They used to use this as the theme music for the late, late movie on TV when I was a kid in the 60's. It always made me think of wet, dark city streets, very hip people moving from one nightclub to another in trench coats and dresses, and neon lights glowing in the summer dark. Such a great atmospheric piece of music.
Grew up hearing this song on nearly every television show of my young age, and its only now I finally know who did it? Thank you for reminding me of this one.
from wikipedia: "In the late 1950s and early 1960s Brubeck canceled several concerts because the club owners or hall managers resisted the idea of an integrated band on their stages. He also canceled a television appearance when he found out that the producers intended to keep Wright off-camera."
Go Dave ! ! ! Serve those narrow minded people "Wright" ! ! !
@andrewfontana I wondered for a moment what you meant about "integrated band". Then it dawned on me, that we were in the era of segregation back then. I take it as a sign that there is hope for humanity after all, by simply having to think about what "integrated band" meant and that I would personally find something like that abhorrent by today's standards. Either that or I'm a complete ignoramus. But I hope not!!
@TravellingMan79 Please, enlighten me on an aspect of english language: what is the difference between an ignorant and an ignoramus? Apart from the latter being someone who wants to pose as posh, educated and elitist and uses a latin word meaning "we ignore"; thereby comitting a grammatical mistake when talking about himself (1st person singular) and an unforgivable "faute de goût". *Real question*
@Aepullo68 I don't know where you're coming from with your "faute de goût" comment, but I recommend that you read my original comment again closely. Instead of tripping over my grammar, you should read the actual message.
Extant, I hope your comment was meant to be a joke (a weak one, if so). Some people go through life looking for a racial angle to everything. I hope you're not one of them. If you are, please note that Brubeck also played a supporting role in this number, in which the spotlight was on Morello and Desmond.
The past 3 years I think . I have been mostly Dave Brubeck song, I can't tell what song is the best but I believe blue rondo a la turk , take five are simple one of the best pieces in Jazz , Just to name the most known song played and created by Dave.
I just can't say how good his music are, just listen.
I enjoy virtually every type of music out there: metal, punk, new age, R&B, rap, hard rock--you name it. But from watching this video, it's clear to me that few performers, if any, truly have the kind of genius in their respective genres and mastery of the instruments they play as the greats like the four gentlemen playing in this video do. They were, and still are, head and shoulders above the rest, and truly make a lot of the music out there that I typically enjoy just sound like noise.
@electrontube This is about four great musicians not one Take Five song and the album Time Out is the ultimate jass song/album that is unsurpassed by anyone in jazz ever. !!!
Saw them live at a military club in 1965 at Ft Sill Oklahoma. It is hard to explain the effect they have on a live audience. They are just amazing live performers. In the 60s, Cool was spelled DBQ They were masters of the Jazz club, live performance.
His (Joe Morello) technique is God given talent and practice. Look up his other videos. His SS rolls are fast.
Look at the bass player and Morello, they are like one, smooth, fluid and at the same time tight, grooving like they were born doing it. You can't really learn it, you have to feel it. You have it or you don't.
All the players take thier time, look at and hear each other. A lot of players don't do that today, same way same day, but not really in formation.
Morello use the Lawrence Stone technique...IE, "Stick Control" ...Stone wrote that book and many have studied it, Stone was Morello's personal teacher in the 40's. Joe also uses the "Gladstone" technique `ala Buddy Rich, Dave Weckl, Jo Jo Mayer, Sonny Payne etc.
i solo on this song in jazz band, our the chords do change but if you look its only 2 scales that change. ex. the arrangement we have the chords are Dm and Am. it always swtiches back from Dm to Am the only difference is if it adds the 7th so it might be a Dm7 or an Am7.
