The sign off had an Irvine, Cal. mail address, and Irvine is a master planned suburban city in Orange county. The first one to announce "KCET offers PBS programming across Southern AND Central California".
The Palm Springs area, Cal. didn't get KCET until the early 1980s on cable channel 8, while KVCR 24 aired (over-air only) on channel 12 in Palm Springs/14 in Indio at the time. KOCE from Orange county was on cable 55/UHF 9 in the late 90s but replaced with KVCR, moved to cable 16/UHF 9. +
KCET had many firsts...Here's a more recent twist. I just bought an HD converter box and have access to KCET's side channels 28.2 - KCET ORANGE (Dedicated channel for Orange Co.) 28.3 - V'me - Spanish Language Public TV - Thanks for watching my vids here and supporting public television. Joe G. in L.A.
Does anyone have the KCET Channel 28 Sign-"ON?" I remember waking up at 5am, and seeing color bars, then the station logo with orchestra music for a few minutes, then really cool Southern California style music with SoCal Scenery and the introduction to the KCET station. It was awesome, and I haven't seen it in years! If anyone has it, please post it and let me know!!! (it's originally from the 80s)
alienseye, you must be thinking of "The Art Chest with Mr. Mihuta." There were also two other series, "The Art Maker" and "The Return of the Art Maker with Dan Mihuta." I don't remember seeing them on KCET, but the shows did appear on KLCS in the 1990's. Each show began with Mr. Mihuta whistling along with a catchy tune.
lmao, i cant believe it. that is it! i used to watch that show when i was a kid. that guy had some crazy ideas. love his work. is there possible i can find least some footage on youtube. i have try looking for it but no luck.
KCET has always been in Hollywood, at it's current location since 1969. It was once the home of a movie studio (a nice place to visit) KOCE is licensed to Huntington Beach, and KVCR licensed to San Bernardino. We are lucky to have access to three PBS stations in the metro LA/OC and Inland Empire. Peace - Joe Goria
You forgot KLCS, the fourth PBS station in Los Angeles, which serves the Los Angeles Unified School District.
BTW, in the mid'90s, there was KCET Communications (later known as KCET/DIMAC), that was located at the Glendale Corporate Center at Colorado in Glendale, CA.
I always found that announcers voice kinda relaxing

The signal is so strong, it even extends as far north as northern San Luis Obispo County (Paso Robles/San Miguel area.)
