  • I love this man.

  • I have to check one day how many times did I shared this on FB.. I think I broke a record with that track!

  • Genius !

  • look at him feel the guitar! so beautiful

  • I remember this song when he played it live years ago. Still brings joy to my heart.

  • Andrew York is the best

  • also segovia and bream. loooooooooooool

  • The greatest modern classical guitar player!

  • this piece brings joy to the heart

  • a 11 personas no le sale saludos desde México

  • He can write in said styles without benefit of "ripping off" somebody like Pat Metheny. All he need have is a basic knowledge of music history and theory. And with a Masters of Music (which this man has from University of Southern California) he would certainly have said tools. Hell, if he read GuitarWorld for long enough he'd have those skills.

  • I would also like to say that I am really tired of people claiming that player A has ripped somebody else off everytime there is the slightest hint of bossa nova in it. If this man wrote a waltz no one would accuse him of ripping Strauss off, and yet for some reason the instant people hear anyform of latin/afro-cuban/bossa nova/calypso etc. suddenly he's ripping off whomever the first person you've heard playing said style. These are ethnically influenced styles dating back long before Metheny.

  • He is absolutely technically superior and I think there is no better proof than his constant awareness of the decay of the notes of the guitar. This instrument requires you to be able to use the silence around the instrument (say... in the beginning of the piece) as part of the instrument itself. There is nothing harder, and he makes it look effortless.

  • Superb. Heard a local perform this a coupe of months ago. Loved it and he nailed it too.

But I must say the Segovia sandwich with Breem/York bread was a little weird

  • ........awkward ending.

  • 1:45 to skip the open straight to sunburst!!!

  • Practising this piece at the moment.... Stunning piece and performance of course, but sadly difficult to master. Ack.

  • The amount of technique that goes into a piece like this is unbelievable! Seriously, those who play this is reserved to the professor or virtuoso skills. My professor performed Sunburst many times however no student I have ever met of his has ever attempted to perform this in front of audiences. Clearly a stunning piece!

  • stop makin michael o toole feel like a fan-boy :P Mick is AWESOMNE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • TOPPPPP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

  • Love this piece...so much so I learnt it. Please check it out at my site "Pipixcan69"

  • btw.... 3:20-4:00 :'D

  • this bickering is useless! just move on and enjoy the epic playing of some classical guitar, if ur gonna b*** about it than dont watch it and dont leave your dirty lil comments lying around for all the innocent musicians to see. please and thank you! :D p.s: sry for the harsh language

  • I must say, for Sunburst, Andrew appears to be forcing his way through it. Check out Li Jie's rendition and see how effortless it seems.

  • @RRVyper its passion ever hear of it! :D

  • Outstanding!!!

  • What the heck. So cold.

  • What the heck. So cold.

  • He almost looks like a sweater version of John Petrucci...

  • dfdffddfdf

  • 1:41

  • beautiful!!

  • I'm not crazy about his playing, but I sure do love his compositions.

  • Amazing player and composer!

  • @rexican & @1234567890greenegg you guys should get off your elitist boat and fuck off back to whatever pretentious septic enclosure you crawled out of. seriously, get over yourselves.

  • I find myself disinterested in Jubilitation - the intro piece, but Sunburst is a great bit of composure. Also, how does he do that?

  • I find myself disinterested in Jubilitation - the intro piece, but Sunburst is a great bit of composure

  • I really like Andrew York's music. If interested check out one of his other compositions - Attic that i've uploaded

  • sick

  • wow...

  • Anyone know where I can get sheet music for this? I NEED IT SO BAD! Haha, but any/all help much appreciated!

  • @nctw123 Look on GSP, I'm pretty sure they have it. You might have to order the introduction separate though.

  • like sims music...:))

  • Comment removed

  • Also, if he really is a Wizard then he must be undone by the morning.

  • @maciejgrebowicz i think everyone here is too polar! while i don't completely agree with you (music, especially a rhythm, is too ubiquitous to be "stolen"), i do think york is vastly overrated as a composer!!!!! and!!!!!!!!!!!!and!!!!!! alongside luminaries like dyens...he would be lucky to be uttered in the same breath! as a player, pretty darn good. as a composer - meh! seriously, just break his stuff down - it's all kinda bleh

  • @mrwormburn chickens are purple btw :P

    /irony

  • @everyone I'm just saying he starts dragging like a mother on the pentatonic section and that he rips off the hook from "phase dance" by my boy Pat Metheny. What the fuck is that about? He can't write his own fucking tune? He has to rip off my boy Pat Metheny? Fuck this cat.

  • @maciejgrebowicz There is a rhythmic similarity between the passage I think you are talking about and those in Metheny's "Phase Dance", but it is an extremely clichéd bossa nova vamp that has been used many times. Metheny did not invent it. The only difference lies in the actual chords used, but it is the rhythmic motif that gives it the characteristic feel. Listen around a bit more, especially Brazilian music of the 1950's and 1960's.

  • @acbulgin2

Metheny could NEVER play an acoustic guitar with anything resembling the control and artistry here. Metheny is the Kenny G of acoustic guitar.

  • @Rexicano It is probably true that Metheny cannot play nylon string as well as York, but that is not my point here. My point here is simply to do with the faulty attribution of a particular compositional cliché to a particular artist. It is not to do with technique as regards a particular instrument. You might want to think about your "Kenny G" metaphor to see how much truth it contains. York is widely regarded as one of the preeminent composers for classical guitar in America.

  • @acbulgin2

R U confused? The KG remark was directed at PM.

Metheny is not ant master of finger style acoustic compared to Bensusan, Hedges (the late), York & so many.

The Kenny G shot is in response to PM's overboard rant against him. But my comparison (NOT a metaphor) is true; PM is a lightweight on acoustic compared to the top players.

Sure, York is using (in places) archetypes of old chord sequences but so did many famous CLASSICAL composers. R U the attribution Police?

  • @Rexicano No, I am not confused, but I somewhat wondered at what motivated the comment you directed at me. I am no great fan of PM, but I respect what he has achieved as a composer and performer. My original statement was directed at maciejgrebowicz who seemed to think York's bossa nova groove was stolen from PM's "Phase Dance" which is ridiculous and shows how ignorant people are of music in general. If that makes me an attribution cop, then so be it, but I do not think so.

  • @Rexicano Furthermore, I never stated or implied that there is anything inherently wrong with anyone's incorporating a bossa nova groove into an original composition. The idea that some musician is a "lightweight" at this level brings a juvenile atmosphere of athletic competition into what is essentially an artistic discussion.Technique is extremely important, but it serves an artistic purpose. Andrew York is a "lightweight" compared to Scott Tennant in terms of technique, but is Scott better?

  • @acbulgin2

You're getting very boring and absurd.

I NEVER said n anything about THIS being lightweight...JUST THE OPPOSITE.

That you think; "Andrew York is a "lightweight" "in terms of technique" compared to Tennant or ANYONE is ridiculous.

    Go away fool.

  • @Rexicano You cannot communicate or understand clearly. I only object to the pointless comparison of musicians at this level. I would not even put them in the same category. PM is more of a jazz composer/guitarist, and York is more of a classical composer/guitarist. They are both first rate. Technically speaking, Tennant is faster and has more polish than York, but as he himself would say: "the fastest guitarists are not necessarily the best ones." None of these guys is a "lightweight".

  • @Rexicano As you say, the idea that "Andrew York is a lightweight compared...to ANYONE is ridiculous." Similarly, the idea that PM is a "lightweight" compared to anyone is equally ridiculous. Grow up and go play your guitar, if indeed you can, so you can become the best guitarist you can be. Any further posts will of course be ignored.

  • good composers borrow, great composers steal. Is it really necessary to put profanity on youtube?

  • @maciejgrebowicz no he didnt cunt

  • it's incredible how "radio friendly" music can be on guitar, thanks to andrew york, and i mean it in a good way. sunburst's composition is incredible. i wonder how he thought in such a happy melody, also exploring the guitar. amazing!

  • Are you a wizard?

  • He is also a GREAT guy...unlike most classical guitar jerks. Of which I am surely one.

  • Someday I'll be playing all these songs!

Thanks Andrew for "Sunburst". It brings a kind of joy.

  • Who couldn't appreciate this; then for the fact that one not need to have helped to expand the repetoire just to express their appreciation.

  • Complimenti andrew, bellissima esecuzione

  • この曲大好きで、できたら弾きたいと思ったんですが難しくてトライしたけど無理でした!弾けたらいいなあと思います!

I wanted to play this piece ,but it`s too difficult to play for me!

    He`s great!

  • A favorite I used to play on radio on Mystic Music and the classical festival

  • I was at his live concert and I must say that he is incredible ! :D

    His music is magic !!

  • I LOVE this piece, ever since I went out to buy it I've been trying to find so much time to practise it, the more I play it the more I want to practise it

  • I agree with plectrist and plus he created the song he can use any technique that suits him

  • maciejgrebowicz wtf are you thinking? York's compositions have been covered by players such as Li Jie and John Williams. What pieces have you composed? Who's covered your songs one of the Jonas bros? You are a non-musical idiot that wouldn't know technique if it bit you on your a**

  • And then came Segovia and Bream. Why?

  • didn't understand that either :s

  • to maciejgrebowicz- lets see what you wrote to expand the repotoire before you talk s@#t about YORK for christsakes

  • Andrew York is the best guitar, your song is the five stars.

  • your wordz is the beautiful.

  • @maciejgrebowicz

It's his piece. He can do what he likes with it. The emotion that flows through every note in this piece comes across so well, and that's what a lot of people are missing when they play it... technical accuracy is only one piece of the puzzle...

  • @crumblycake1969

There is some truth on your comment.

    Sadly.

  • im really starting to love this guy!! so far i have learned Andecy, Walking, and Snowflight by him. His music is so fun to play

  • Ok, when are you free? I have nothing on this Friday at 5:30 if that suits you.

  • Listen at 2:50. Whos the boss theme clearly ripped off york ^^

  • LOL

  • what a beautiful performance. the legato runs are flawless, so clean. i wish it stopped at 5.14 though so i could take it all in without those other clips taking away from it..

  • i was just asking a question after a while it just gets annoying reading all negative and insulting and ego crazy comments all over not just you rm just so many people wanna try and put people down and be negative its too bad music is great and im lucky to be a part of it just too many posers and un artistic people ruining it 4 us lol

  • lol its ridiculous to ask someone how difficult a piece is? you must have never went to college 4 music

  • No, I have never went to college 4 music. I suppose they teach that there is an objective scale of difficulty that I don't know about. Some people would claim some pieces are hard, and others would claim those pieces are easy.

  • wow calm down... lol.

  • nice, buttttttt amateurish, he hit a G note instead of an E at 1:59

    hahaha

    jk

i cant even play the first phrase

    hahaa

  • how hard is this piece ? i was wondering

  • That is a ridiculous question. Try to play the piece, find out for yourself.

  • its not THAAAT hard, but it isnt easy either... but if you practice you can play it

    sorry my english T-T

  • Find the difficult parts, practice them, and see where the parts connect... that's the hard part... start slowly :)

learn in chunks i suppose i'm trying to say ^^

  • how hard is it to play ive been doing alot of baroque de visee and weiss what would u compare it to difficulty wise?

  • Which pieces?

Many of Weisses more difficult sonata style pieces can be comparable to grade 8-10 RCM (Canadian Conservatory)

  • does anyone know where i can get the music for sunburst? or both?

  • GSP San Francisco is the only place. You have to buy both the introduction and sunburst. Inexpensive by the way. very readable and playable.

    GSP is Guitar Solo Publications.

  • fuckin brilliant.

  • Although he looks like a wizard, the joy of Andrew York's music is unique and extraordinary. I hope he lives forever.

  • lol wizard

  • hahaha extraordinary

  • His look and style has a renaissance feel - lovely mixture of old and new.

  • @rm3cpp lol wizard

  • @rm3cpp he IS a wizard... so he probably will live forever.

  • @rm3cpp At one time his wikipedia article said that he was born in the 1800's, so...

  • I've been a big fan of Andy York's tone for a long time now - this sure doesn't disappoint. Slur technique to die for, also!

  • i love the random ending.

  • Is a nylon string classical guitar.

but his tone colors on the guitar are amaizing thats why is confusing sometimes

  • you could try Savarez alliance corum

They have a very "steelish" sound on there treblestrings....

  • hussaiz3, Classical guitar uses nylon :)

  • Andrew York - The "Augustine Barrios" of his time.

  • no its to modern i think

  • Yes, that's true. However, his originality, his ability, and the oversight of Andrew York, all make me think of Augustine Barrios. And he's still relativly young. What more is to come? We'll see.

Either way, you gotta love it?

  • love both of the pieces, and played amazingly well by the man himslef

  • I love Segovia and Bream, too. Why are they here? Weird!

  • quasi ai livelli di re vinello

  • he is quality i'm gonna learn all his stuff

  • This guy is fantastic. I'm yet to hear anyone in our generation compose better pieces, he deserves to go down in history with the greats.

  • This is possibly the most beautiful piece of music i've ever heard.

    :)

  • check out clair de lune

  • Ok. SOMEONE has to have a tab of jubiliation.. right?

  • If I remember correctly, it's in a really weird tuning, like the top string tuned to D. One of my friends played it for guitar class back in high school. Umm...best bet would be to find sheet music and figure out the fingering by doing that. That's probably how you've gotta go for this one.

  • drop to d on 1st and 6th string. then practise for absolutely ages :)

  • he plays this better than anybody ive ever seen

  • well he's had a bit longer to practice it than anybody else ...he wrote it. :-)

  • wow, that's cool!

  • Comment removed

  • @alienwareufo It was random huh? It was Julian Bream, you should look him up if you haven't. Hell of a Guitarist!

  • Nice piece. I think it might even sound nice on a steel string guitar which is not often the case with classical guitar works. This one, however is very bright and the way it is arranged makes me imagine Ed Gerhardt or somebody pulling it off. There've been quite a few steel string guitar artists whose music is on a par with classical in beauty and complexity of dynamics though not of tone color. Not much variation in color on this one so it'd work for steel.

  • Are you sure about that comment? Just in relation to your observation on tone colour, if you observe his right hand throughout the piece, you will notice it going from over the sound hole to the bridge or from dolce to ponticello. This clearly displays the variation in tone colour and shows why you cannot use a steel string.

  • I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't used at all in this performance. I meant that you could pull this piece off on a steel string and still have it sound quite nice. Now, I wouldn't say that about Sor's Gran Solo which Bream begins to play at the end of this video (mistake, clearly), because tone color plays a very important role in bringing it off. Btw, some of the higher end steelstrings made thesedays can produce some tone color variation though not as much as a classical, of course.

  • I wanted to list some names of some steel string artists I recently discovered whose musical style put me in mind of this piece and vise versa:

    Ken Bonfield

    Giacomo Fiore

    John Ford

    Jay Calder

    Bill Hammond

Perhaps, after listening to some of them, my comment will make more sense to those of you who are less familiar with what's going on in fingerstyle guitar these days. I, for one, had to revise my opinions about steel string guitar considerably when I heard them.

  • fair point, i was probably a bit wrong in saying that you "cannot" play it on steel string, but thank you for recommending these artists i will definitely check them out

  • I sent you a link where you can do so for free to your private inbox. Glad I was able to make myself understood. I know I said something unpopular. Steelstring has a negative conotation to many classical artists though I really don't understand why. I'm a classical player myself and I find I like SOME of the stuff just fine. That incarnation of the instrument has interesting possibilities as long as you understand its strengths and work with them. Chapdelaine has done well there.

  • Most civilised internet argument EVER.

    GG, you two.

  • Uh ... Thanks, I think. :) You know, this piece is really uplifting. Found myself a bit under a cloud this afternoon and hearing it rolled back its curtains, so to speak. I'm indebted to you for your response which made me access it again.

  • Haha. You're welcome?

  • he looks like shakespeare

  • I just watched Lie Ji's version again, and once again I'm struck by how fake the legado (at 3:25 in this video) in her video sounds. Its true, the original way he played this piece before he wrote Jubilation was better, much slower. Here he feels like hes rushing it, but its still better than her version.

I don't think this is the best piece he composed anyway, just one of the most popular. I like it, but hes done better. Go see Letting Go for the best.

    ~Kai

  • thats a quality beard

  • i don't know he reminds me of an evil wizard from like old cartoons

    amazing talent

but he's probably got some weird stone to give him his power lol

  • hit my thought :D

  • Amazing Video!!!!

  • I came.

  • i lol'd

  • The introduction part in this piece is 'Jubilation' and the second part is 'Sunburst'. So this performance should be titled 'Jubilation/Sunburst'. Anyways, remarkable piece. I've started studying this recently, it's prodigious. Andrew York definitely doesn't get the fame and notoriety he deserves..

  • True it can mean "widely known in an unfavorable way," but lexically it simply means "widely known," and based on the context and the author's intent he is using the word "notoriety" to mean "widely known." Now see, there is more to a word than the simple definition pulled from a dictionary which may or may not have done a full etymological study on the word.

  • A nod to Pat Metheny "Phase Dancer" at about 3:00. I like this; it's intelligent

  • hah, i noticed that too

  • where did you get this video?

  • It´s from an instructional DVD and published by MelBay. Andrew York is the host and teaches some of his compositions. As much as I know, it is still available. This is no Concert, what might explain the poor tonal quality of the recording.

  • High energy - excellent rendition ! Slightly noisy on the strings, but still good. I think I prefer the tonal coloring of Li Jie's later version, and I feel hers sounds more "profound", but I'm not sure I could pick between the two as to which is "better". Despite the relative lack of tonal expression, York makes up for it in energy and tempo expression. Li Jie's version is for a romantic candle lit dinner with my wife. York's is for waking up and feeling bright and fresh.

  • How could you say that when he wrote the song!!! He actually is expressing himself Li Jie is just playing what he wrote. It takes far less talent to just copy what he did, but to sit there and write this takes true talent.

  • He was referring to the performance, which has nothing to do with who wrote the piece.

  • This is true, but a different kind of critique can be said if he's playing his OWN material.

  • While I see where's your coming from, this is video is terrible quality and all timbre is lost. I don't know if it's the actual DVD itself or just the compression of YouTube/ripping of the video but the CD versions are lush with timbre. The second more than the last, since it was originally recorded on a steel string guitar.

  • --- but that is like saying a Davinci copy is better than the original. He is the composer of the piece--- it came out of his head--- he invented it. Jie Lie is a good player but not in the same Caliber--- no grammy's in her name--- . Getting a lot of youtube play doesn't mean you are great.---

To clarify he was a member of the LA guitar quartet----- good teacher and composer and author various guitar books.

  • Incredible video editing.

  • lets see u do better ya dick

  • is he using damman guitar in this video?

  • Fantastic

  • F#@k Clapton. Andrew York is...always was GOD!

  • Macmanue

All stars make small mistakes, as long as they dare to appear live. I'm a great fan of York, he stands for innovation in a guitar field which as I have it is too static. And it is fun watching him perform...

  • I reckon this is the best version on youtube....I liked it better than Lie Jie's performance, but nothing against her!

I think its funny how they added that extra bit at the end, do they do it to cover up Andrews really bad harmonic at the end? :P Listen carefully to 5:14 just before it cuts hehe :P

  • I just listened to the version by a young Asian girl called Li Jie and it is amazing especially since she seems so incredibly young. Check it out.

  • Brillant.

The most beatiful interpretations i have ever heard about this song.
