  • Such a beautiful melody ... it is always a pleasure to watch an enthusiast at work :)

  • Beautiful guitar player and beautiful voice. I love all your videos. Please keep them coming.

  • mucho floro gordo huevon AL GRANO

  • just write the cords as a guitar player you made it way harder

  • Thanks for this,,,,very helpful. The A7 shape you play is Am7 I think not the normal A7? i.e. x03010 No doubt a hundred others have mentioned this! The plain A7 would be x02020 or x02223

  • Lmao, you are awesome, man. Everything about you is awesome.

  • doesn't paul play it with a capo on the 7th fret?

  • @davemathews48 Yes I have the tab and I checked with the original recording, it also says it in the music book too.

  • Great lesson Mark, thanks for teaching me one of my favorite Simon and Garfunkle songs. My version is not quite as good as yours but I consider it a work in progress.

As you always say though, I had fun with that one!

    Thanks again

  • Well done sir.

    Cheers,

    allen

  • Beautifully and carefully explained and played. Excellent!!

  • your a col cat,,,like your style ,,,,this is tough for me but ya made it easier to understand ,,,,thanx soo much ,and, peace to you man

  • im having a lil trouble and am gettin frustrated--when you go to the G chord and hammer on the A7 exactly which strings do i pluck??

  • Thanks.

  • thanks for the lesson. you play and sing this so effortlessly.

  • Thank you!

  • GREAT TEACHER!

  • I think you're brilliant.......and you make me smile. (the harmonic!)

  • I like your singing to! Good, sweet voice. Keep it going.

  • Awsome vid!

  • Thank you very much.

  • Mark, this is by far the best "Scarborough Fair" lesson on YouTube -- and I've watched a lot of them over the past week. Thanks very much!

  • Thanks for the lesson, this really helped me learn the song! You are an excellent guitarist, I hope I can play as well as you one day.

Just a small tip: the intro/ending is easier if you do it like this:

  • Sir, I would like to let you know that, to me and others, you have been just like a friendly friend on the Internet. I really appreciate your sincere efforts to help people learning guitar. Your lessons are great. I am in my 60's now and I really enjoy those melodic songs from the past. I like your little guitar with great sound, Is it a Martin? I love to play guitar, too, but too poor to get a good guitar.

    Respectfully.

  • You rock!

  • Many flamenco guitarists uses all their fingers, just so you know :)

  • Watch Lindsey Buckingham...I am almost certain he could be seen using all five.

Keep it up Mark...you gave me Mrs. Robinson...tanks!

  • Thanks for the lesson. I started playing guitar again about a year ago and your tutorials have been very helpful. You have taught me a lot.

  • It sounds very nice thank you. I think your cute anyway Mr G. Keep up the lessons. Thank you very much. I enjoy these songs for a change.

  • He has simplified the song ... except he should have the capo at the 7th fret...still sounds good. the guitar is small its not him! an easier key for most people.

  • Maybe it's not small it just appears that way because of his size.

  • hello. thanks for the video. What kind of guitar do you have there? Is it Steel or Nylon strings? I notice it is smaller than most, is there an advantage to that for fingerpicking style songs? This question is for the goldhat and anyone else who might have an idea. Thanks

  • i have to laugh , you look just like my next door nieghbor. haveing said that enjoy your teachings find myself back at ur site often, now we must work on ur singing lessons ....wheres was that $spent at for those lessons? ........... lol

  • Hey there, thanks for the good lesson again. It is indeed not too difficult if you have a closer look. Keep up the good work you are doing for all basic guitar players like me.

  • can you play the sogs od david gates and bread? Please Please Please Please Please Please Please

  • hmmm... can you make a close-up vid for this... sorry.. i'm a bit idiot that i can't understand..haha...

  • How iare the Cand D chords done? I keep doing normal chords, but they sound wrong.

  • 5-1-3-4-2-3-5-1-3-4-2-3-5-1-3-4-2-3

  • Good job Mr goldhat

  • Great lesson. I'm glad you got that harmonic at the end -- it looked like it made it all worth while for you! :)

  • Right you are! Paul missed it on the original recording and had to go back and overdub that little harmonic.

  • Excellent! Great teaching style. No narcissistic talk about yourself and why you're doing this. Just great teaching! Thank you! Oh, nice picking, too!

  • is that a full size guitar

  • lol dude you literally mean that he is a giant, no its a small sized guitar. You could guess it from the bridge size...

  • thanks pal have been trying to learn that one for a long time and with your help i finally nailed it

  • Excellent!!!!! It will take a lot of practice using five fingers and also I need to see the chords chart while doing them. Thank you!!

  • magic. thanks.

  • Great lesson. Thanks for taking the time for making this video. I have been trying to learn this song for a long time.

  • good lesson.. i think the second chords in the intro is a EM with A for bass.. no?

  • o_O 5 fingers

  • Hi Goldhat,

    Who has signed your Guit?

  • Thank you very much fellow, I really like this song and you are a good teacher!

    I'm from Cochabamba (Bolivia)

  • man, how do you pick with FIVE fingers. That's insane.

  • You don't pick with five fingers, BS6, you pick with four. The pattern is five, one, three, four, two, three (as he rightly says) but where your thumb takes care of the fifth string, your ring finger looks after the first, first finger plucks the third, THUMB comes down to pluck fourth, middle finger plucks the second and first finger on third again. That is the best way to do it. Using five fingers is just bad technique (IMO) and overcomplicates matters.

  • Comment removed

  • I agree, it's a personal choice but if you are learning it from scratch, how would you teach it...using five or using four?

  • FOUR! but sometimes the harder way for one is easier for the other...very rarely, but , yea I see your point. four feels much better for me!

  • hey this is really good!!

probably the best lesson video on this song i've seen!

  • is the guitar too small or the guy too big??!!

    great video anyways.

  • LOL...I was thinking the same thing. He's good though.

  • in flamenco they play with 5 fingers

  • thanks Goldhat!

  • cool dude!

  • pasticcino rulez! go pasticcino go! :D

  • When i retire i want to be just like you! Thanks a lot dude!

  • thanks a lot, il enjoy playing this song :)

  • Thanks Goldhat... i love this song, great tutorial. that picking thing was driving me mad until i came accross this vid.

    thanks again.

  • Found your channel last night and watched some of your lessons. This song is one of my favorites.

I really appreciate your great work an I think I can learn a lot of your videos.

    Thank you very much.

I was looking for some tablature for this song, but I only found some simplified versions.

If anyone has some tabs with alle the hammer-ons and so I would be thankful to receive a link.

  • Great lesson, Goldhat, as always. The one thing that you didn't detail was the pinch walk-down from C to G that you say "everyone knows."

Sadly, I dont know this move and am having trouble figuring it out. Would you mind detailing it here ( I am sure I am not alone here--and Paul Simon uses this A LOT!)

Thanks a million and nice work.

  • squeeze at the same time

    bass c b a g

    top e d c b

You can also do it in reverse, as Paul often does too.

  • you're the best!!!

  • I can't believe how well that lesson was done! I've only started playing guitar seriously 3 months ago and in 20 minutes I was playing the song along with you! I do have quite a background in music but you made this very easy to learn! Thanks!

  • Thanks man, great lesson!

  • You make that guitar seem so small!

    Great lesson, thanks alot.

  • Thanks ever so much for posting this lesson. It was a big help.

  • Is that a Roy Roger's plastic guitar from the '50's? ; )

  • Paul Simon stole this arrangement from Martin Carthy English folk singer and Guitarist . check him out

  • well done

  • Man, that was great! You play really good. I always wanted to learn it, but thought it would be too hard. You make it pretty easy! Beautiful. Thanks and keep it up!!

  • Thanks alot for sharing with us all.

    You play beautifully.

  • You should check out Chet Atkins, he uses all five fingers and makes it sound like he has 3 or 4 more somewhere he is slipping in there. Very nice vid

  • can you make "castle's in the air" and "and i love you so" by don mclean? Thanks

  • Me encantó la lección, sonido de sueños.

Cuando años atrás, de muy joven escuchaba estas melodías en los discos de vinilo, cuanto hubiera pagado por una clase así...

    Thank You!!!!

  • Nice one my friend !!

  • Very Nice. Thanks. =)

  • what is the famous walk down c part, sorry i'm lost?

  • Yeah. Churchill said the English and Americans are two peoples separated by a common language...

  • You're such a nice guy... thanks for teaching us this. It's a pleasure to watch over and again.

  • to me this is the most beautiful song by paul simon and thank you for showing us how to "pick it"... interesting pattern

  • Nice playing.

  • I love the way you teach, makes a lot of sense, but as an Englishman, who has lived in Scarborough for 15 years, we don't pronounce it quite like you do! You seems to over pronounce the end of the word ScarboRO where we'd say Scarbara .. not in the least a criticism of you, just saying!!! Will try and learn this now...

  • Yeah you're right. I'm english too. From London. Those crazy Americans really butcher our language.

  • Thank you! Actually I should be learning maths now but of course this is way more interesting. I can't play the guitar but with such a good explanation I can learn to. I can already play the first to chords lol.

    Thanks!

  • You are terrific, as always. Thanks!

One question... I must be the only one who doesn't know the famous walkdown/squeeze from C-->G. Could you do a mini video on it. (I sure am demanding!)

    Thanks again, a pleasure.

  • Very clear explanation on Simon's talent !! Thanks !

  • I get so tired of seeing such ugly negative comments all over you tube. I love seeing everyone delight in your video. Please add me to the list of people who say thank you for sharing your talents. You can really see your own enjoyment while playing and talking, and that's what it's all about. Thank you Sir.

  • Thank you, I'm practicing.

    I love this song

  • I did the same thing. I never realized it was the only tune he used five fingers on though. It was a good mistake since use five is more difficult than using less. I too still use all five when I need to. Searching around I ran into a YouTube version with Andy Williams. Only instrument is Simon on his Guild. The vocals are really stunning and smooth and all three voices play harmonies. Worth a listen. Thanks for the lessons!

  • Thank you so much for this video. Very well done and this is a wonderful choice of songs.

In my opinion, one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

  • Your lesson's a great help. I'm sitting here with my guitar and learning this song. Thank you very much. Best regards from me in Malaysia.

  • I'm gonna learn it today! Nice job!

  • i love this song so much, i'm gonna learn it tomorrow

  • THIS GUY IS A REAL GENT!!!

  • thanks sir!!

  • would you be able to tab this out im not very good at playing with out it written infront of me. Thanks!!

  • as jammie056 said i too learned this song in

    Dm,but i must say i like your's much better!

or paul's how ever that go's (lol)

    thanks for showing us this!

    PS

i find it funny you do the samething i do when trying to show how to play a song slow, you get lost or forget because

we have to "think" about it i guess,i don't know, and your voice will melt an e-string

    you sound great dude.thanks

  • Thank you sir!!! Great lesson!!

  • Mark thank you very very much!!!

This was my best song while i was a kid. Because of this song i started to play guitar, but i have never learn it. So u made my dreams come true!!!! Thank you again and you have best regards from Croatia!!!

P.S. what do you think of song Suspicious minds from Elvis? could you make it as a guitar lesson? i think people will be trilled

  • Makes it look a lot easier than it is!

  • It is easy

  • I ripped up the vinyl learning this song till I got all the notes correct. Then about 2 years later I saw Paul Simon play it and found to my amazement he plays it in a completely different key. The same key that you use in your video. Am I believe. I play it in the key of Dm. Another example of that it is possible to reach the same goal following 2 different paths. For grins check out my version.

  • Thanks for the post! - I can play this now, great teaching!

  • Great video, I've always wanted to know how to play this, thank you. What is that great little guitar you're playing.

  • It's a 'Little Martin' - I've got one and they're not bad and not too expensive either

  • Very enjoyable lesson.

  • What cord is the hammer-on after the G cord in the beginning of the song? (at the 4:32 minute mark:-)

    Thanks! I appreciate it.

  • ...me neither on the c to g walk down but with goldhat3 and alot of practice I'll learn it. Great lesson and you have a wonderful voice.

  • MY MATE that was brilliant i hope i can play that as good as you after studying your vid.

  • very soothing ...I'll stick withthe drums though :P

  • well thank you very much for posting good sir. you just made my day

  • 'the famous walkdown from c to g that everyone knows'

    i dont ;(

  • squeeze 5/3 1/O, 5/2 2/3, 5/o 2/1, 6/3 2/o.

  • thx a lot, now I can play it.

  • Thank you so much - I am on the verge of tears. You have a wonderful teaching manner.

  • excellent! great lesson! thank you!

  • Thank you

  • Very good! I think we watched the same TV show, That´s how I got the chords right!

  • I love this song and for some reason was having a hard time learning it from the recording, Thanks a million for the lesson

  • Thank you so much Ive loved this song since around 6 years old and although Ive played it without a capo using other chords -I came accross this by accident and its reignited my love for the song Thankyou once again

and like the previous could you let me have the walk down from c to g please?

  • Thanks a million for this lesson. I just started playing guitar and lessons like this help a lot. I just got one question. I don't get the walk down from C-chord to G-chord. Could you please give some extra info about this?

    Greetings from Holland!

  • i have the same question... can you please tell us?

  • Thank you so much. I love this song but always played it wrong...until now. You are an excellent teacher!!!! I really like the way you walk thru the details of each chord. Even a dummy like me can follow this.

I wish you the very best!!!!!!

  • Great job my Mark doing this video. I am still a bit stuck with parts! Could any of you more experianced people post the "TABs", so some of us other noobs, can see the exact fingering for this great song? (Please) Thanks to people like Mark ,and all the positive post, its a great way to encourage people to learn guitar and music!

  • your an awesome teacher! also could you tell me how long have you been playing guitar?

  • Since 1966, with a few breaks in there.

  • Thanks for the lesson, Mark. A couple of questions. Shouldn't the first chord be x03020 rather than x04020 as you posted in comments? Also, for the second chord the video with Andy Williams clearly shows Paul playing x02200 rather than x02000.

  • Almost. The first chord is x04030. I fixed this in the notes.

  • sir I have a question, can you teach me the finger picking and the chords of these songs

: Old Friends, Bookends, and 59th street bridge song. I hope for your help sir.

  • you really played it well. I would like to have a request, can you post a video of this tutorial with the camera slightly near the guitar? I can hardly see the position of your fingers on the chords. Hope you can respond soon. By the way I gave you 5 stars.

  • Excellent lessons, you make them quick and easy to understand. I tried working some of these songs out from Tab but found it hard work.

    Thanks. Keep them coming!

  • Great tutorial,I just bought me a little Martin after hearing yours, thanks.

  • Excellent job of teaching this song. I like the way you break things down. Thank you.

  • Hey, thanks a lot! I never could quite get the fingering right. Really glad you put this on!!!

  • well done sir

    thanks a lot

    you really inspire me.

  • Well done sir.

  • thank you so much....i grew up with these songs too.. you do a beautiful job and so nice to teach us...i am having trouble with the walk down squeeze from c to g that i havent learned yet...could you maybe spell that out a little better for me ..thanks

  • Beautiful song, very well played. I need to buy a capo now but I WILL learn this! Thanks to you from the UK.

  • Thanks for a great, detailed, and VERY USEFUL lesson. (Too many folks here try to teach what they can't play, but you obviously CAN play this.) Great job, and thank you for posting!!

  • thanks dude umm leave a message on my youtube account.i have a question for you.

  • I love your videos and love how much pleasure it seems you get out of helping us all learn the guitar. Thank you so much.

  • Yep, it's fun. Also I do it for myself, so I can remember how to play these songs too!

  • Thank you. I really appreciate this. Simon & Garfunkel are my favourite band. Thanks from a beginner guitar player all the way from India.

  • Hello to India, glad you like S&G. I like tandoori chicken.

  • Nice! I love Simon and Garfunkel, and playing on my guitar, so you are a hero for me! :p

  • Nice! Guitar Hero sounds good to me.

  • i Wish you can Zoom into your finger my english isnt really good so its hard to understand. I just move over from Vietnam and im about 11 now

  • have you tried making the video full screen?

  • goldhat vids are fun...it's kind of like watching bob ross paint

  • Hey thanks! I like watching him paint too for some reason.

  • Hi Goldhat,

I'd love to have you post a lesson on S&G's "Kathy's song" or "April come she will." You're a wonderful teacher - simple, yet complete. These two songs are real gems...

  • excellent job teaching! I learned this song from your lesson in about a half hour. Incredible talent! Thank you so much!

  • Great! Please post your version, I would love to watch it.

  • Hey!

Thanks for adding guitar lessons to youtube, it's reciculous how much money some websites ask forwhat you just did. It's really generous!

About the song, is it also possible to play this without a capo?

  • You can play it the same way without a capo or at whatever capo position you prefer.

  • My sweet lord! first Vincent and now this! i can wait to get into your other songs!

  • Very nicely done. You've got a nice manner and I like the way you break the song down into its component parts, slow it down, and then put it all together. Very helpful for a beginning guitarist like me. I love the song, and now I've got a good idea of how to approach it. Others have already commented on the few glitches (capo @ 7th fret on the album; am7 fingering rather than a7). Do you teach other S&G or other 60's songs?

  • Yep, just search goldhat3 guitar lessons for a list.

  • ich mag den onkel

  • What a cool man! I like his teaching style.

  • Great! Well done, friend. Personally, I use three fingers (two fingers and thumb) to do it. As a banjo player, it just feels more natural.

Also, are you aware that the capo on the album version is on the 7th fret? Not important, really, but it's just in a higher key.

  • Hi, I play instead of the e7 an A without the ring finger

  • hey man could you please explain the walk to the c chord which comes before the famous walk down, i do not understand walks currently. cheers mate.

  • Walk up on 5th string

    5-0, 5-2, 5-3

Walk down do the opposite and squeeze at the same time:

    1-0, 2-3, 2-1

  • I teach guitar and I thoroughly agree with Goldhat. A small number of teachers unfortunately waste their students' time and money.

  • great job explaining it sir, i also thoroughly enjoyed the history leson in the beginning. :) this is such a mystical song, its captured my heart since i was very young. i figured out most on my own, but you have helped me to get through parts i didnt have a clue on :)

  • thats a little guitar or a big guy....lol

  • thanks

  • Thanx for this man! It takes my guitar teacher like five sessions and 50 bucks to learn somit like this!

  • It should be 10 minutes and 5 bucks.

  • Thanks, it`s great when people outthere take time to show how to play these great songs
