Shohreh Aghdashloo is the best actress I've ever seen. In House of Sand and Fog she is absolutely breathtaking. Even outplaying Sir Ben who by nature lacks of "Iranianism". Kingsley is the master, Shohreh is the goddess!

Saying Aghdashloo played herself is like saying any American actor/actress plays themselves when they are an original American character in a fictional movie. Just because she played an Iranian doesn't mean it was herself. She played a woman who couldn't understand a difficult situation and had to go through pain and anguish with a blindfold on. She deserved an Oscar and praise for her performance.

Well, as I said below, it was SHE who said she was playing herself. It was SHE who said she had experienced the same sorts of things (like been born in Iran and coming to west). And it was SHE specifically who said as soon as reading the part that of course she should get it, because she only had to play herself.

AGAIN, I do not mean to disparage her. But being a great actor means convincingly playing someone TOTALLY DIFFERENT from yourself, eg. something Kingsley has done countless times.

I recommend viewing the DVD extras to learn more about her. Also, imdb tells some things about here (for example, that she left Iran in response to the Islamic Revolution--just as her character had in the movie).

Kingsley has keen sense of humanitarianism. Never forget the 1st time i saw him perform at Stratford-Upon-Avon in 1970. He played the spirit creature 'Ariel" in Shakespeares "The Tempest". Nobody knew him back then.

His mum was part Jewish/East European. Ben was born in Yorkshire (yikes, not the best place for a half caste kid i can tell you!) Yorkshiremen are not known for their racial tolerance. ("strong in arm, weak in brain" is the motto)

OneDrifterLady:  Kingsley did an "Actors Studio" interview which was superb..probably the ultimate episode infact. On it he explained everything, his race, his culture, his difficulties growing up in Yorkshire. He was hypnotic!
