A`oothu billah! The prophet muhammad عليه الصلاة و السلام said "Do not enter upon the unbelievers during their ritual ceremonies and festivities, for verily this is when the wrath and curse of allah descends upon them the most" (due to their polytheism).
Also, allah says in his glorious book that "Whosoever takes other than allah as law giver, such are the unbelievers". Also, the prophet said "When the unbelievers are praised, the throne of allah shakes due to his wrath".
This is not to say one is forbidden from showing the unbelievers respect where it is due, as allah also says in his glorious book al-qur'aan (lit. "the recitation"). However, things must be put into context, not taken out of context, and so the bigger picture becomes more clear. Here, it is worth noting "respect" and "praise" are not the same and so one does not have to praise an individual just to respect them. It is praising which is forbidden, amongst other things. This topic is long.

A`oothu billah! The prophet muhammad عليه الصلاة و السلام said "Do not enter upon the unbelievers during their ritual ceremonies and festivities, for verily this is when the wrath and curse of allah descends upon them the most" (due to their polytheism).
Also, allah says in his glorious book that "Whosoever takes other than allah as law giver, such are the unbelievers". Also, the prophet said "When the unbelievers are praised, the throne of allah shakes due to his wrath".

This is not to say one is forbidden from showing the unbelievers respect where it is due, as allah also says in his glorious book al-qur'aan (lit. "the recitation"). However, things must be put into context, not taken out of context, and so the bigger picture becomes more clear. Here, it is worth noting "respect" and "praise" are not the same and so one does not have to praise an individual just to respect them. It is praising which is forbidden, amongst other things. You are also calling people to believe that minor sins can be done at leisure and one need not fear committing them when it is known the prophet - peace be upon him - said "The smaller sins will take most of the believers to the fire because they collect up over time". Also, when the khawaarij and other hypocrites (later to adopt the name "shi`ah" for themselves) refused to pay the zakaat to abu bakr when he was khaleefah abu bakr threatened them with war and to kill them all as unbelievers due to the fact that allah says in the qur'aan that whoever refuses to pay the zakaat has declared war upon allah and his messenger and the hadeeth "The one who abandons prayer and the charity (zakaat) is a kaafir"..

It is al-kufr and shirk to interpret the qur'aan based on one's own opinions because allah intended the qur'aan to mean what he intended it to mean and no man's self-interpretation amounts to anything except the fire for himself due to his challenging allah on its authentic meaning.
