I have just discovered YouTube - thank you for this. I agree with most of all your comments and feelings - this is such great nostalgia and great music! It is a pleasure to read people appreciating rather than degrading. Thank you all!
I was just a little kid but I remember this song (and Gogi) when it first came out. I'm not much on nostalgia for nostalgia's sake but it's nice to see someone like that still performing and enjoying making folks happy. Also not having to hear "motherf****r" shouted out over a sea of shakin' bootys is refreshing. It may have been a naive era but it had more class than a lot of the crap that passes for entertainment today.
I want to crack jokes, but I love this song too much and her voice is still good for 80. The Wikipedia says she is still performing. Good Lord. Then again, Betty White is still doing it.
Gogi Grant, you rock! I watched this performance on PBS, and it was spellbinding. This song always makes me weepy, for it makes me think of my father's difficult upbringing. It's a song for the ages, that's for sure.
I was 17 in portland oregon and im glad I lived it all the way! 1956, the greatest time in world history and its gone boy if time travel was possible byby dodge im outa here, I just wished you guys and gals could have seen it and lived it! Thanks Gogi for being part of our life and many others to: I will see you again in the spirit and beauty of "THE WAYWARD WIND". Me and my deceased wife have a lot of rivers to cross and mountains to climb and your welcome at our campfire anytime kiddo.
Saw her this morning in our local Parade. she looked great and I told her I liked her singing. Sadly I was the only one who knew who she was , at least in the group I was standing with. She was popular in the UK where I come from
I was around when Gogi first recorded this song.....I was completely swept away by her angelic singing voice. She, and the song is still one of my favorites.

My goodness, Gogi hasn't lost an iota, has she? And yes, she did in fact turn 80 the year of that video (2004). What an amazing, enduring, robust voice!
An absolutely stunning clip, I love Tex Ritter's version ( which I have uploaded) but Gogi's is the definative version. Her voice is still amazingly strong even at 80.
Another great song from my childhood. The composition, melody, her great singing, orchestra, all were of the best quality one can imagine. I still love this beautiful song!

I wish the tremendous ovation that Gogi received had been included here. What a moment of triumph. Gogi nailed it, half a century later. There must not have been a dry eye in the house.
Another great song from my childhood. The composition, melody, her great singing, orchestra, all were of the best quality one can imagine. I still love this beautiful song.
Seeing the older ladies singing along, to me; is very touching. It really shows the power of music, to make you feel the way you did when you first heard it.
This has been my favorite song since in came out in 1956. I don't know why but it just grabed me. I'm a very big Frankie Laine fan who recorded this about 10 years later but his just can't touch Gogi's. Tex Ritter's recording was good but not up to this.
Even Patsy Cline cannot do justice to this wonderful song as much as Gogi Grant does ! Its not just her great voice but, the special rhythm of the soundtrack, also. Even at 80, she sounds as good as the original, WOW !!!!
Another great song from my childhood. The composition, melody, her great singing, orchestra, all were of the best quality one can imagine. I still love this beautiful song.
This song went to #1 on the Billboard pop charts in June 1956 and stayed there for six weeks. No surprise to me, since Gogi Grant had such a sweet and mellifluous voice. PBS had a special Fifties revival recently and it was quite a thrill to see her!
thanks gogi for being a part of those days! I grew up in the most fantastic period in all human history and she was a big part of it! mY PRAYERS FOR YOU KID!
I love this song. It is simple yet so well written, especially for the singer to open up and load it with expression. I've listened to other arrangements and I like this one the best. Thank you Gogi!
Gogi needs to be spanked; I recently picked up a mint copy of the album Suddenly There's Gogi Grant (1957 Era Records). I was prepared to be bored by "The Wayward Wind" and "Suddenly..." but all of a sudden the track "The One I Love (Belongs To Someone Else)" came on and, so help me, I made Gogi sing that damn thing about 100 times. Part jazz, a drop of blues and all heart made this specific recording a masterpiece. I was singing it with Gogi well into the night! Entertaining, versatile singer.
I wonder if she sang any more songs in this concert and if any more videos of them are posted on youtube. I very vaguely remember seeing her do this on TV when I was about 6 years old.
That song sure brings back good memories! I was was seven when it was released in 1956. What I would give to travel back to that time, even for a short while!
This was the song I never forgot and have 'sung in the shower', and play on chromatic harmonica (gave that up for many years before coming back to it), because it evokes such emotions. I can't understand how anyone could want to hear any other version but Gogi's. Hers is the voice I hear in my head as I play the song (by ear). The video of her from 4 yrs ago blew me away! How many almost-80 yr old women still have their voices with such power, beauty, style and grace? Astonishing! I love her!
Bless her heart-I was born in 1950 and still find comfort in the music from that era, in fact as years go by i enjoy this stuff more and more-better than the Junk today. God Bless Gogi.
The Wayward Wind hit #1 on May 5, 1958 and stayed #1 for 8 weeks; then stayed on the Billboard Top 40 chart an amazing 22 weeks, a rare feat then and now! Its hard not visualize a story when you hear this song.
An outstanding arrangement with Ms. Grant's range and pitch, strings, French horns, choir and rhythm and you have a classic. And I had always wanted to see her perform this song. She is such a treasure. Thank you for posting this video. Gere
The video was cut too short, but did everybody jump to their feet at the end, and clap, and yell, and shout, and scream the house down for at least ten minutes? If not, they oughta be ashamed of themselves!
This the first time I've heard her sing "Wayward Wind" since I heard her original recording. It's beautiful to see how she still seems to care about the song, how the song has somehow grown with her. May she keep singing it for years to come.
Gogi had not been around as much as she'd wished for her daughter while trying to break into music so, remarried, she had her son Josh & decided that at that point it was the late sixties and music as we loved it was dead anyway so she retired to raise her son.
Her last 2 albums 1 a featuring a god awful upbeat 60s arrangement of Wayward Wind but still full of fantastic sides on her part then the other The Way A Woman Feels show what all her peers went through Gogi singing Joplin? Rock sucks lol
This song reminds me of a simplier time in my life when going was tough but everyone was happier. Wow- what a voice-one of my favourite all time songs-a classic.
God bless you man. Not enough on here. I have more on VHS but a spaz as to transfer tech. There's a new CD out of her rarest singles "No More Than Forever" Amazon has it.
Still sings in same key with NO wobble in her vibrato, can wail or whisper still at the top range w/ SOLID control unlike ANY singer from her heyday. Here 2 yrs ago & just blew audience's minds.
To this day in 2008, Gogi's performing still KICKS any singers ass.
She still performs if you ever get the chance see her.
I've often said to her that maybe if Judy Garland had never had a pill, drink or cigarette in her life, she'd still be around singing with all of HER faculties as Gogi does. Sadly only Gogi is the 1 vocal phenomenon who's voice is barely burnished a bit by time. All of her range & even more power now then 40 yrs ago.
I checked out the Follies website and she's not going to be there. :( Guess I need to go to Fl. if I want to see her. LOL I know my aunt would that. :)
We've been friends since I met her in '89. I'd been in love with this phantom voice since I'd taken notice of it sometime around '74 watching the Helen Morgan Story.
When she made a comeback appearance in Boca Raton FL where I had a client who wrote for the Boca News there were articles about us & the things I did to find out anything I could about her including posing as an author to get into her RCA files when they had offices on 42nd st in NYC
She owns this song. no one can match it.

She may not be doing the Palm Springs Follies this year so as she has family here I'm keeping my fingers crossed but she's well and very active.

I checked out the Follies website and she's not going to be there. :( Guess I need to go to Fl. if I want to see her. LOL I know my aunt would that. :)

I asked her and she said they generally rotate headliners so she doesn't do every season.
I can't imagine who else they'd want but my Gogi. Fools.
But she's lives in LA so you've a better chance of catching her out there if that's where you are.

They are fools not to have her every season. You must the president of her fan club if you asked her about it LOL

If you ask her she'd probably say Fan-atcic.

Most of the "artists" today don't have the style that Gogi, Patti and Eydie have. Patti is AWESOME in concert!!!!!
