  • UsUk.

  • parnters or friends lol.

  • I think batman and robin are gay. lol

i dont know... but love their answers.

    hahaha....

  • 0:55 "What's that supposed to mean?" lol

  • Come on Game show network lets start puttin old game shows back on again...n this back heck with correctness

  • I loves Charles in this clip LOL

  • Charles Nelson Reilly couldn't relate to "queer", he was funnier than a 3-dollar bill.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

  • Wow, those utility belts must've had SOMETHING interesting in them...

  • I'm bi, and I probably would have replied "gay". It's *THE* obvious answer to this question.

  • 3 people still think they're straight (or they're indenial)

  • Ohmygoodness! I've never seen this clip! That's funny!

  • According to that Tinkerbell clip, an acceptable answer would have been "strange"!

  • I cracked up at "so far we've got two queers" with the camera showing Charles immediately afterward.

  • Is anyone knows of the episodes where Sal Mineo is ony of the panel people let me know! I saw on another game show that he mentioned he was on the Match Game and I'm a HUGE Sal Mineo fan and want to see him on this show! let me know! =P

  • Amazing....what a difference three decades makes....

  • i would count richard's response too .. to hell with it, they all scored

  • Last I looked,lovers should be a synonym for queers!LOL

  • @landrykkb Not necessarily. 'Queer' could mean they were lovers, but it could also mean they were homosexuals that were NOT lovers. So it's really not the same thing.

  • As others have said, I don't think the other panelists were purposely trying to be offensive. Back then, some words effected people in different ways. And this is coming from a gay man.

  • uh she totally should have gotten 6 outta 6 wtf?

  • Fairies!...lol. This game show rocked.

  • Ok, lets say it like it is, they're fags. That's it, then end, move on.

  • I wish everyone please do not and will not say that comic book characters Betty and Veronica are lesbians which they are not

  • sorry just a little overreacting....xD

  • i mean Nanette said fairies. like who really gives a crap? I sure don't!

  • Now you see, at 2:44 she said fairies which really means "queer?????????" seriously? i don't know these people came up with such crazy answers! how are batman and robin queer? that does not make any sense. ugh....

  • I also believe richard and Brett didn't match on purpose. Out of respect for Charles. Not because they didn't know the answer.

  • I wonder if someone would have said "homo" if the judges would have ruled it a match?

  • I'm sure they would have, if they accepted "fairies."

  • @DrLove0378 They didn't accept lovers.

  • I don't go for that kind of thing....I said they were "Divine"....just Hilarious.

  • In his own way, Charles actually came across as empowering in the face of the more narrow-minded panelists. We will never know exactly how he felt about having his lifestyle played for laughs, but he put on a brave enough face to go on with the show.

  • @ericandy88 Nicely said

  • Gay had been referred to as happy for many years before this aired!Even in the early 80,s,I often heard queer be referred to as strange.

  • You know the moment I got my Robin outfit, a rumor like that would start! LOL!

Kinda odd seeing Brett sitting on the bottom tier and not in the upper tier!

  • It was odd seeing her there, but I think at this point in the series, she wasn't a regular yet which is why she didn't have her prized spot.

  • Also Bobby Van & Elaine Joyce were married at the time, and the producers liked to put couples next to each other.

  • LMAO, although the three regulars (Charles, Brett, and Richard) had answers that should have counted as matches.

  • Because two gay men don't necessarily have to be lovers, married, or devine. So that isn't a match. Fairies and Queer were both words for gay and that is why they match.

  • this WAS hilarious.

  • I found it funny how the guests panelists matched but the regulars didn't.

  • The only reason "queer" is such a taboo term today is because people began putting such hate behind it. Back then, it wasn't such a bad word, not even for gays, like myself. I imagine "Fairies" would have been much more offensive.

  • Your mother wishes you would have stayed in school.

  • I wish you would go to Fairy school

  • Turn six, please.

  • Sorry, I went to History class, instead.

  • They'd be crucified for giving answers like that today.

  • Of course lovers should had match so should Married also

  • Elaine Joyce, ooohhhh baby.

  • This+Modern Times=Lawsuit against Match Game/GSN

  • Bret looks really good w/ long hair.

  • Brett and Richard were regulars and out of respect for Charles I think that's why they didn't go there. The others, especially Bobby and Elaine, might not know Charles was gay. Surprising the producers put the question in there. Though maybe they knew they would get a variety of answers as opposed to the obvious.

  • I love Charles' answer....HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

  • Well fairy was the answer on a tinkerbell one and it got matched with strange so I'm thinking it means strange.

  • Oh, it made sense. It's the same darn thing. It's a street name for a homo...

  • sure it does. Faerie, queer, queen and fruit are well known slang terms (in America at least) for gay. Certainly at the time this show aired they were not considered as crude as fag, butt pirate, peter-puffer, pole-smoker or sausage jockey.

  • don't forget ass-goblin

  • ROFL

  • Queer wasn't so horrible at first because back in the 50's and 60's, queer meant extremely odd and turning into a term meaning gay wasn't as offensive as calling someone a fairy. Then people really started putting the hate behind the term queer and it started to hurt people.

  • friends should be nice

  • How did she only get 3 people with the same answer? LOL

  • I see your point, but back in the 70's, most everyone, even gays, used the term "queer" to mean homosexual.

  • I don't see your point. This happened in the 70s, and you counter with something equally offensive _today_? You lose by approximately 30 years.

  • If He has paid for your blindness, can I pluck out your eyes?

  • @Landrew120880 haha your a queer

  • @boyowood arrrg. i formally take back my comment from a year ago. i can do that, I think.

  • @Landrew120880 Maybe you can do it again.

  • I noticed Brett Sommers' answer "lovers" was not considered correct enough by the judges but "fairies" was counted...

  • Well, "fairies" is a synonym for homosexual -- that's not necessarily so, with "lovers"...

  • Well, how about "married"?

  • @DrLove0378 It is if they're Batman and Robin! lol

  • Just because they were "queer" doesn't mean they were "lovers" lol :)

  • I think Batman and Robin are racsist

  • This show was funnier than anything on TV today. I'm surprised they didn't match Lovers with being gay...same thing.

  • Really? They don't show this anymore?

  • Unfortunately yes, as well as the 'fag' episode from 1973 with Dick Gautier and his former wife Barbara Stuart giving that term as an answer.

  • Well, this one could be at the request of DC itself; so I can understand that. Prolly wanna distance the characters from "THE AMBIGUOUSLY GAY DUO"! Otherwise, it's just Sony being paranoid.

  • imagine the outrage if they tried using "queer" today

  • dat would b funny

  • Which is why most shows suck these days. Political correctness extremism killed everything. Scumbag lawyers are rich and happy though.

  • re:Dutchman063 - actually the word "queer" is actually preferred over gay by some folks. They'd have been more upset by the use of the word "fairies" by one of the panellists. Today, of course, they'd just say gay and be done with it.

  • The good ol' 70's

  • Hey, why did you guys downrate his comment? It was pretty amusing! I guess the PC police is reading YouTube comments too!!

  • Those were the good old days.

  • Sandy was pretty hot. :)

  • That girl is a grandmother now LOL

  • You know...you're probably right.

  • Charles Nelson Riley doesn't relate to that kind of thing!

  • @corinthian129 Well.....not anymore.

  • diiuuuh, cyclops (rednecks)

  • I dont care what anybody says..sandy is kinda hot. WHITE GIRL FEVER..STILL HAVE IT !

  • I wonder why they didn't accept "lovers" as a match.

  • Just because you have two queers doesn't necessarily mean they're lovers. :-)

  • I don't care if you call me fag, queer, sissy or gay - just call me!

  • This was truly cutting-edge TV for the time. Here we are, 34 years later and people are still too sensitive to let this be shown again. I'm gay and from the context it was clear that the joking was all in good fun and no one was intending to demean gay people.

Match Game also had a virtually identically phrased line about "Tonto _____ed the Lone Ranger". The responses were "kissed" and "married".

  • how is fairies a match but not lovers they're both men and if they're lovers they're queer!!!

  • I know, I wondered that one too. Well, fairies was a word for queers back then and for all I know still is.

  • Very funny! Ahh, the days before groupthink ruined all the fun! I think Charles answer was the best. Maybe too subtle for the times.

He could have really pushed the boundries and said "Batman and Robin are... Fabulous, girlfriend!"

    Ha, ha!

  • Nice video u show Drlove all thou i ponder she should had all 6 cause lovers n married are same as she said....but hey its along time ago shame was pulled off GSN

  • I know smoking was very prominent on game shows many years ago...did anyone noticed the ashtrays among the celebrities? One between Bobby & Elaine, one next to Richard, and another to the left of Nanette. (I know I watch Lucille Ball on Password back in the mid 70's and she was caught sneaking a smoke between commercial breaks.) You definitely won't see that on today's game shows

  • Nice moment at 1:51. It's so nice to see Bobby Van's comment giving Charles a good laugh. All the hundreds of times Charles Nelson Reilly made me laugh until the tears came, it was so nice just to see him have a good solid laugh in turn. He deserved having good laughs a hundred times over.

  • Batman & Robin being gay is one of the oldest jokes out there - probably why Match Game went for it! Charles Nelson Reilly not going for the obvious - have to same Im disappointed!! Love Bobby Van but totally do not get the joke about the mattress lol! GSN - political correctness gone mad; why people would be offended is beyond me. It's 2008 and we have Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Queer as Folk but not this??!!

  • Her last name is Simmons and Simmons is a famous bed mattress maker.

  • Simmons the bedmaker I knew - the fact that her last name is Simmons I didnt catch XD lol

  • If anyone said the Q-word today, the thought control police would have a tantrum...

  • Haha. 1984 hadn't quite hit these people when they were playing Match Game, had it? LOL

  • What is the Q word?

  • Queer. Gay, homosexual, you get the idea.

  • Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. xD

  • As I said before, if you don't like the video, then fuck off and don't watch.

  • I thought of homosexuals.

  • I love that show...

  • Richard's answer makes me laugh. LOL

  • I actually really liked Charles' answer! Devine!

  • Ironic Charles didn't put down queers! LOL. But his answer was a good one as was Brett's.

  • Why wasn't 'lovers' a match?

  • One of the great film cuts. Gene says "so far we have two queers..."

...and then the camera cuts to Charles.

    Brilliant.

Ah, the days before political correctness.

  • Well he WAS next for his answer but I do get what you're saying.

  • I have mixed feelings too. Elaine Joyce in the 2 seat and Brett in the 4 seat. Kinda disturbing!

  • Elaine Joyce was married to Bobby van at the time.

  • i have mixed feelings about this video.

  • come on, this is before POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. I still laugh, 'cause that was about the real answer.

  • Exactly. Back when people were allowed to (horrors!!) actually LAUGH without being dragged off to Sensitivity Training seminars.

  • Still funny. Hard to believe GSN Game Show Network will not show that episode.

  • That one, along with the 'fag' episode featuring Dick Gautier and Barbara Stewart.

  • Sad that GSN won't air that episode. What's their beef?

  • The only reason, I see why GSN will not air this episode. 'Cause they might have Queer people working for them. I'm 42 years old, and watched "the match game" and this is before all this Political Correctness Shit. I can watch episode and still laugh, or any other episode.

  • The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) lodged a complaint with GSN about this episode. GSN decided to get GLAAD, who were being quite haughty and obnoxious about it, off their backs and pull the episode.

This is why, as a gay guy, I really, really dislike GLAAD. They've run amok as the gay community's media watchdog group, and have a massive humor deficit.

I still think this is one of the most brilliant, laugh-out-loud funny moments in MG's history. I laughed my ass off.

  • They didn't realize CNR was gay?

  • @NYDanno85 I agree, I am gay too and don't understand some of GLAAD's actions sometimes. Personally, I would have said "they are gay and hot for each other." LMAO.

  • They didn't realize CNR was gay?

  • If Archie Bunker is still allowed to say it (and that episode is still shown), why not these episodes of "Match Game?"

  • PC (and I don't mean your Dell).

  • I thought Bruce Wayne adopted Robin.

  • I think he bought him on the auction block.

  • hilarious

  • HA HA HA THIS IS GREAT ! HA HA HA My mom watches Match Game (the old ones) ha ha this was excellent !

  • ROTFLMAO!! 'Match Game' (7x and PM) ruled!

Why wasn't the episode containing this clip on the 'Best of' DVD set (which contains mostly episodes of the latter years, which were utterly boring; unlike the earlier years)?!

  • Brett Somers just died, on Sep. 15th, 2007

  • I'm sorry, I have to dispute the acceptance of "fairies". After all there were other answers that suggested homosexuality that weren't accepted and...wait, what do I care? This show's forty years old. Funny clip though.

  • As of 2008, the show is only 34 years old.

  • R.I.P., Charles! :-(

  • R.I.P. Brett Somers, she died on Sep. 15th, 2007

  • i dont believe that if they accepted fairies that they didnt accept lovers or, to a lesser extent, married

  • I guess they would have accepted any synonym for "queer" or "homosexual" in this case. "Lovers" and "married" didn't quite fit.

  • im surprised three out the six said the same thing

  • is charles really gay

  • Yes, he is. Read the Wikipedia article about him for more information.

  • Bullcrap from CNR, word is he supposedly is or was....

I take it that GSN got a crapload of letters and emails and pulled that episode?

  • Yes, you are correct. Charles Nelson Reilly is still alive -- barely -- and is still gay.

The people at GSN were fools to pull it from the rotation -- it's hilarious! Complains or not, they're effectively trying to change history by hiding this episode from everybody -- pretending it never even happened.

  • unfortunately, chuck has passed on

  • Yes, fairly recently.

  • this is HILARIOUS.

  • You know I think that Woman Contestant was right and I would have probably have said the same thing about Batman & Robin . I am surprised that Gene didn't fall to floor laughing his BLANK OFF when she said that , because He was always laughing about everything .
