ya it has a simple guitar part that is similar.. but thts it!!! iam surprised thts all it takes to lump the 2 together. two different sounds and different directions. i dont think mccready was playing coming up with his song influenced by silverchair.. just a gess tho
Out of all the concerts...this one is the one I wish i was at the most....this tops nirvana unplugged, woodstock, up in smoke etc. So wish i was at this gig
except "i don't know anything" blows, layne passed and he was a kick ass singer, but that doesn't make it a good song nor does it make it any better of a song, layne staley or not, songs miss sometimes. just like nirvana for instance their song "tourettes" on the in utero album sucked so bad it was unreal. but anyway, similar or not, slave is a better song than idk anything. side note: mad season was a bad idea. but they only had like one album and AIC reunited afterward so it wasn't too painful
@thenewpollution2 i've already heard it and i just listened to it again per your suggestion, and my opinion about mad season previously stated that it was a bad idea, still stands, and i feel even stronger about it now having listened to that song again. the whole album was just a big miss.
@tlsgs16 dude the amount of crack you have to be on to say that should mean that youre actually dead right now.... Above is one of the best albums to come out of the nintees. it doesnt have to be big heavy and dumb to be good.... the lyrics and the tone the album has touches an emotional note that few have ever come close to achieving, the album is a masterpiece and while most people would say "its an opinion" im actually going to have to say it isnt... youre just wrong if you dont like it lol..
@tlsgs16 bad idea????!!!!!!above was a brilliant album.... this song comes no where near close to the musical capacity as tht album... silverchair now comes a lil closer as far as musical structuring and arrangement.. they've became alot more talented even tho most dont understand thr direction. AIC was cantrell's show... mad season was layne's... get the difference
@scoff131 i dont think so listen to no association at the same concert i think they have a heavier guitar sound then mad season maybe not chains but daniel use to use soldano amps those are some heavy sounding amps
Silverchair is the best fuckin' young group I've ever heard. One of the best groups period, obviously. I'm a fan of Sabbath, Zeppelin, and Cream, live mostly. These guys were amazingly heavy. Hearing Frogstomp @ 8 years old was interesting to me because the artistry and singing mainly. I'm learning to play it after all these years.
this may have been asked but i can't find it. does anyone know what amp daniel is using in this performance? i know he used to play a JCM900 and then moved to soldanos. just wondering if this performance was with the marshall. thanks!
@detroitmetalfreak Jizz...sorry, couldn't help myself lol. I have long thick hair like his and when I'm dancing around it becomes a frizz puff, so I put water on it. Or jizz hah jk.
yeah "i don't know anything" and this song are two differents songs. even the riffs aren't exactly the same. i think that the time layne took to make a stupid mad season album he could have gave us one kick ass AIC album instead. maybe i'm bein selfish but i think AIC fans would agree that we would have preferred and AIC album over a mad season album.
I don't. I absolutely love 'Above' and I think it was a better move for Layne to be a part of Mad Season for a while, then push himself into another Alice record.
WTF? Mad Season - I Don't Know Anything DOES NOT SOUND ANYTHING LIKE THIS SONG...except for a few chords but WTF that song is so shitty it's not funny...and this kicks ass 100000000000 more times then that band with a singer that looks like a hobo!!!
@KIRSTENmusicLOVER Are you talking shit about Layne Staley from Alice in Chains!? because that was real talent! and one of the greatest singers of all time, and that's not an opinion it's a fact. Like Sully Erna from GodSmack said, He was one of the greatest singers ever and that any singer that says that Jerry C and Layne weren't the most powerful duett are liars, and that you can't even get a number of how many people that he has inspired to become a singer or a musician.
@AliceInChainsVideos Ok, Ok geez. Sorry I just thought the performance wasn't as good as their recording or something. Just forget about what I said ok?
@AliceInChainsVideos LOL and about what I said. I didn't mean to bag Alice In Chains or that guy. I was just angry about the comments about "Rip Off's" :-)
Wow Silverchair use to be bad ass... I saw them a few years back and they were the worst of the line-up by a long shot. I wish they still sounded like this!!!
"sounds like a Mad Season ripoff" I dont think we can call it a ripoff per se. Between Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains, there was about 2 years of no studio album releases. And for Silverchair about 2 years. I am not sure we can call it a rip off, even though it sounds reeeeaaally similar. If we call this a rip off, I dont wanna say it, but I think we have to call Metallica's "end of the line" a rip of Tool's Vicarious. thank you Netscion for helping me discover MadSeaon :)
Two words: Raw Talent. The rhythmic pulse of the chorus is awesome. Johns could really bring it back then. Not really any singer/guitarists/songwriters at his level even to this day.
Wicked song. Chorus guitar pattern is slightly similar to Hey Man, Nice Shot by Filter in a way but the song was written around the same time so whatevs
holy shit, this does sound exactly like mad season! well, you can't really compare silverchair to mad season so theres no point calling it a ripoff....maybe it was a coincidence anyway
I don't believe they took riffs from anyone. They were just very heavily influenced by certain bands and a certain genre of music. I seriously doubt they intentionally tried to sound like anyone. Except for maybe "Tomorrow". They did say once that they were kind of trying to sound like Pearl Jam when they wrote it, but then realized that wasn't really a good idea.
they sound nothing like korn or deftones, maybe bits of nirvana and alice in chains but what do u expect? thats grunge for you,its like saying a pop tune sounds like that pop tune,a metal tune sounds like that metal tune, its all the same structure and will sound similar to other bands
dude, the mad season song sounds different except for the riff that is like 2 chords over and over again. You can't have part of asong be 2 chords and then if someone else uses those 2 chords in another song, say its copied. The bottom line is aside from those 2 chords, the songs are completely different. The vocals are waht really drives this song anyway, so i gotta stick up for silverchair on this one.
Yep. I was just listening to Mad Season's album and I was like wait a second...this sounds a lot like a Silverchair song I heard. I had to go through like all of their songs just to remember which one lol. But I like this song better than "I Don't Know Anything".
lol yeah they both use like the exact same guitar rift and drums are almost the same....mad season also had a song called "i don't want to be a soldier" and that is part of this song too
@netscion a rip off? the song was probably written the same time as i dont know anything, and to be honest, we may aswell call all songs rip offs that have similar guitar riffs and lyrics to others, because think about it, every chord on the guitar has been discovered and used throughout music for as long as the guitar has been around, so technically all songs are rip offs.
@redhardnuts actually this song was written bfore mad seasons i dont know anything thats whats funny about this argument, this was written in early 96 mad season was released late 96
@theladieschains2 I Don't Know Anything was recorded in 94 and released in 95. It was before this. Can we just say that they are both kickass songs and leave it at that?
@thenewpollution2 well actually slave was made before idk anything. cause silverchair was formed in 92 and before they played a demo for a competition in 94 they had already written most of the songs on frogstomp, slave being one of them. and we could say that they are both kick ass songs, IF they both were actually kick ass songs. but idk anything was a miss. so was mad season.
@thenewpollution2 ah shit, i got confused with "shade" and "slave". i was thinkin shade was on freakshow and slave was on frogstomp instead of vice versa, my bad. but my mad season opinion still stands. not that it matters now since i've made an ass of myself.
Yeah, it was the first thiong I noticed...they totally stole the riff, but not the whole song. I can't be too angry though...imitation is supposed to be the highest form of praise, and they do make some great music. :)
I love alice in chains, Layne Staley and not so much mad season...but ur full of shit, nuthin even close...but get real, everything sounds like black sabbath anyways so give up...
Its only the harmonic riff, that is similar to the i dont know anything from mad season, listen to it, im not saying, its exactly the same, so dont say im full of shit man
yeah it is just like that riff but it's just two notes! just because two songs are similar doesn't mean that someone has copied someone. i mean i play guitar and write songs myself and every else who does this knows how often you come with a riff and someone says "hey that sounds just like...." and you haven't even heard the song it's just coincidence.
Nigga i come wit 300 Bloods all day u austriallian or however u spell it muthafucka i dont give a fuck bout u ur mama ur daddy or ur whole family nigga this 9 tre original bangers get down or muthafuckin laydown pussy nigga
Youre right in saying that it's not grunge, it's post-grunge.
A completely different genre. It's pointless in trying to judge and generalize a bands entire sound. And in my own oppinion, if you are going to watch a vid of these guys rocking out for no other reason than to rip them off, then you have no life. I mean, who does that?!
This is a good example why i hate this band. Back in the day here they did plastic, ripoff grunge. As for the, lets face it, obviously copied riff from Mad Season, it appears Eddie Vedder's words in "4/20/02" ring true here.
the evidence is overwhelming that they ARENT awesome. And they were never grunge. They were studio polished plastic. Grunge is raw dirt. These guys cant even hold a candle to any other grunge band that exploded from Seattle in the early 90s. Even if you cant see past their catchy smeared tunes, and boyish charm, and in your eyes its "good" rock, fair enough, but to cap it off they turned their back on it. They now do electro crap
I love his voice.silverchair rocks!

new1wave1vampire 2 years ago
its not the exactly same they just hit the same not silverchair its two different notes but it is the same beat
ankles29 2 years ago
They fucking copied this song from mad season, the mad season song is called i dont know anything, listen to it
wwemattlord1 2 years ago 2
lol its the harmonic bit in the riff still love this though
funkenstien69 2 years ago
Yeah, it was the first thiong I noticed...they totally stole the riff, but not the whole song. I can't be too angry though...imitation is supposed to be the highest form of praise, and they do make some great music. :)
eiradis 2 years ago
I love alice in chains, Layne Staley and not so much mad season...but ur full of shit, nuthin even close...but get real, everything sounds like black sabbath anyways so give up...
Fanat1287 2 years ago
Its only the harmonic riff, that is similar to the i dont know anything from mad season, listen to it, im not saying, its exactly the same, so dont say im full of shit man

silverchair owns...plain and simple
msrysignals 2 years ago
The riff is blatantly stolen from Mad Season's "I Don't Know Anything".
And "Suicidal Dream" is ripped off of Alice in Chains' "Bleed the Freak"
BroadwayRonMexico 2 years ago 4
and Alice in Chains completely stole "Dirt" from Black Sabbath's "Electric Funeral"
so what the fucks your point?
msrysignals 2 years ago
as is, "Rain When I Die"
msrysignals 2 years ago
All great songs imo. Everyband copies songs and adds a unqiue twist to it.
Great video btw.
Leutrim23TM 2 years ago
that's exactly my point
msrysignals 2 years ago
yeah that show's their influenced by other band and their style. as simple as that...
Cx203 2 years ago
You can't talk about influence here, it's COPY
Just listen to "I don't know anything"
Krawle70 2 years ago
yeah it is just like that riff but it's just two notes! just because two songs are similar doesn't mean that someone has copied someone. i mean i play guitar and write songs myself and every else who does this knows how often you come with a riff and someone says "hey that sounds just like...." and you haven't even heard the song it's just coincidence.

Their new music= lousy. Should've been released under a different name as it sounds like a completely different band.
timspriggs 2 years ago
THis is a wickid song im learning it on drums
Frogstomp1995 2 years ago
That main riff is an obvious ripoff of Mad Seasons "I Dont Know Anything"
spunknchunky 2 years ago
true that... Both are very very similar!
fonkyjunkie 2 years ago
This looks like their best gig ever. Every song ive heard from this gig sounds amazing, wish I was there.
rever223 2 years ago 2
Bro, don't diss what you don't understand.
ConRichards 2 years ago
This is a good example why i hate this band. Back in the day here they did plastic, ripoff grunge. As for the, lets face it, obviously copied riff from Mad Season, it appears Eddie Vedder's words in "4/20/02" ring true here.
Elliott13371 2 years ago
dont diss silverchair, they were the first aussie grunge band and whatever if they ripped off some song theyre still awesome
spaman3 2 years ago
the evidence is overwhelming that they ARENT awesome.
Elliott13371 2 years ago
if daniel johns is gonna disown this stuff and not play it at gigs, id happily take the rights for it. its pure gold
lol, theres such a difference of fans on youtube on the old silverchair videos and the new ones.
i prefer the old ones alot more!
88blackened88 2 years ago
what? Was that purely hypothetical or is there some serious talk about Dan disowning his stuff? .. :O
MyStrangeBehavior 2 years ago
naw i read that somewhere. he's embarrassed by it cos he thinks its his high school band and he thinks of it as a different band
thats what i read anyway
88blackened88 2 years ago
huh, thats interesting..
well, thanks for the reply
