I can remember sitting in the new "MINI" at the NEC Motor Show 1999, and the original style 1999 Rover version beside it, immediately loving the Rover version with its wide arches, deep dish alloys and wallnut dash. Such class and charecter it had. I was 6 years old and I fell inlove with that little car right there and then. Today, as excited and happy as i am, because i just bought my first car, a 1989 Mini :D :D It might not be a Morris, but atleast its one step closer than the BMW lunchbox!

The new bmw version has no right to be called a mini cause its bigger, no character and most of all its a BMW (biggest money waster). you spend more servicing them than you get driving.

Everything that has been said it true, overpriced, not the same etc. But it is also a good car. If it was called something other than MINI it wouldn't be hated half as much and probably would have sold more.

Nothing will replace the original (I drive one myself) but the new car handles like a dream and pulls well even bog standard.

The new MINI is an pretentious, overpriced pastiche driven by image-obsessed knobheads. It will never have the shelf life of the original because it was designed with style over substance.

Rover had no part in the development of this car because they wanted to make the Spiritual concept which was as ground breaking and innovative as the original was back in the 1950s.

The BMW MINI is an insult.

The mini as-was launched in 2001 was 100% designed by Rover, before BMW cut and run. BMW kept it as their own at the very last second as they realised it would make a mint - and it has. It is not a German car, albeit it now uses many european and german parts in its current incarnation.

We had our own versions too.

The "Mini K" had the 1098cc motor and the seats from the Wolseley Hornet.

The later Leyland Mini Clubman had a restyled, squared-off front end.

The Mini popularized the idea of the small front wheel drive car with a transverse mounted engine.

All the major manufacturers now build a car along these lines!

@kazimann i can remember when i had an open mind about the new mini back in 1999. At the 40th celebration at silverstone there was a publicity tent bmw had rigged up with some sort of show promoting their 'version' it was basically all smoke and mirrors. I came out very dissapointed. I think bmw where aware even then that there would be a massive backlash of mini people towards an item that was nothing to do with the real thing and made by germans.

The original mini was the best and always will be the modern one is to big and to expensive. The original was designed to be small fun and affordable. As for bmw they drove rover into the ground the company was doing well upto they took over and i dont consider the new mini to be british as its a bmw and not an austin morris or rover . Anyone remember bmw saying a 100bhp was the most front wheel drive cars can handle safely funny how they have bmw minis with way over that.
