Jefferson Airplane succesfully created White Rabbit's base notes, but it was GB who put it into improvised version and create this one grande masterpiece!
Glad to hear this song of passion in the middle of music comercialization.
Did Jefferson airplane take the title of their song from here ? o_o
Just kidding lol
This is absolutely amazing ... I'm in love with that :D
Thank you so much for uploading this ... That was the time when music was actually based about talent and passion ... I wish music like that would be made nowadays..
Do you old timers remember the movie sound track for "Go Ask Alice". There is a very memorable vocal version. I am 51 and this movie was about a young lady struggling with drugs, I must have been 9 or 10 years old.
being of Hispanic heritage, when i hear music like this i feel in my past life i was a conquistador, but when i wonder if i rode my trusty steed in pride with my armored plated breast which lost it's sheen, i must of rode her with my head hung in shame for the way the conquistadors ruled in domination of the Americas with the ability to manipulate the political situation between local indigenous peoples and though I came with my sword held high
hope u don't mind my writing again, when GB decided to use my 50's ES 175 on a set at The Godfather Club he said he knew Jim Hall played a similar axe; he saddled up, sat on a stool w/ Lonnie Liston Smith on B-3, proceeded to tear the shit outa my guitar, burned the house down, there were only half a dozen customers nightly
sitting in darkness so I had GB to myself all week. I was in heaven. I later played the tapes I recorded for Tommy Gumina CEO of Polytone; GB later became his endorsee.
They should re-release this as a single and play it on the radio. I'm more than certain that this record would outsell all of these abominable tracks polluting the airwaves nowadays.
And, if not, then this is a great piece for real music lovers.
@isleoforkney GB was booked at a little jazz dive in LA for a week called The Godfather Club, I was there nightly, he told me his manager owed the owner a favor. he still plays with my old B-3 player when he's Maui, you dickhead.
@cliffworks4321 nice try cliffworks, you must live in some kind of fantasy world, you grilled GB back in the 70's in a little jazz dive, ah that has made me laugh
Dude, listen to cliff. I'm delighted to hear you think it's a fantasy world, but he's telling it real. LA clubs in the '70's featured disco and MOR. There were only 2 premier Jazz clubs and barely a handful of other dives. Those playing there were the best in the biz, and if you had any creds you could get some face time with some now very big names. I, for example, puny newt that I am, have held Carlton's 335. Stop laughing -- we ain't lyin' we're sharing.
@MrNicespaces thanks for the reply, I was just winding up Cliff for my own amusement, I don't doubt any of it, there's no reason that he would make it up. He was taking things a bit seriously and using abusive language, so i thought I'd carry on, should have better things to do with my time really! ; )
Oh, brother, I getchya. I just right now got a reply from another post I made in jest -- they took me too seriously. Now I can't figure out if THEY are being sarcastic back to me...? I guess I'll have to use "; )" more often.
As an aside, for some reason this is the cut where I first REALLY fell for Herbie Hancock. I think he backs better than he fronts.
Not that you need your water carried, but I thought Isle needed a little intervention. I hope I'm representing. I was trying to be a fusion cat in LA in the '70's...I KNOW you ain't lyin'.
@MrNicespaces hey I was doing the same thing, leading bands, doing gigs with some heavies too Art Pepper, Tommy Gumina of Polytone, all of Ambrosia rhythm secition, piano Dave Benoit, B-3 guru Gene Argel now on Maui plays with Benson when he visits, bassist Tony Garnier w Dylan since 89, bassist Armando Compean some great guys! where did you play, with whom?
Brings back so many memories - those CTI records were almost always gems. I loved this album - also had California Dreamin on it. I was disappointed to read in the later years that George Benson didn;t like the way these albums were recorded and he called them "sterile" I still say everybody came to play!!!
Talk about a "Wall of Sound," and this wasn't even a Phil Spector arrangement. Those old CTI records of the early to mid-1970s were fabulous, as Creed Taylor usually had his best talent "guest star" on each other's albums. The White Rabbit album, for instance, had Earl Klugh on acoustic guitar, Herbie Hancock on electric piano, Billy Cobham on drums and Hubert Laws on flute, to name a few.
So if I were to rest-stroke pick a scale would I do a rest stroke on each note or would I ascend by doing economy picking and then descend by changing each string with a down stroke......or both......Im trying to develop some practice exercises involving rest strokes, any advice?!??!?!?!?! A basic definition of a rest stroke would help out a lot...
@OrisLover GB said at 9 years old he could play anything he heard. At Godfather Club they had a jukebox with jazz 45's; Charile Parker's Just Friends came on, he softly sang Bird's solo note for note to demonstrate his uncanny abiity. I was just a pup studying with Barney Kessel and Polytone CEO Tommy Gumina, gigging with Art Pepper all over LA, it was a great time and place. Carlton went to my high school Narbonne, Ritenour to Rolling Hills High; they still visit Tokyo often, Blue Note tours.
Beautiful.

Sounds like Ennio Morricone, Albert King, Jefferson Airplane, and Herbie Hancock all had a jam session.

pls check out SRVMOE's channel. In the 70's he recorded Benson, Martino and maybe
others live, just as I did but my recordings were all destroyed, Thank you SRVMOE for posting those fantastic live clips.

@illnastic if you want to research GB's picking style pls do google search for
the Tuck Andress analysis, he spent serious time watching GB and wrote an excellent
breakdown. I spent a week with GB in the 70's in LA, grilling him nightly on all aspects
of his playing. He played my old ES 175 on one set - and it sounded exactly like him!
