I only keep bands of memorable smokes. Like maybe if I smoke a cigar for the first time, I'll write the date on the back and store it in a box. Or if I smoke with a buddy, I'll have him or her put their initials on the back of their band and add it to the box. I have a few hundred so far.
@boy4everjoy Actually, my screensaver only works on a Mac and is just part of the way the operating system handles display sleep. I put all of the photos in a directory and tell the system to use that directory when going in to display sleep. I looked in to creating a screensaver system that would work across platforms, but I couldn't find a solution that looked good.
I currently have 3 of my favorites a Brick House, Drew Estate Natural, and a Nestor Miranda Special Selection flattening out in between the pages of my bible. I might start the scrapbook thing myself.
Awesome video Doc, I honestly just put my cigar bands in one of my wooden cigar boxes, I never thought of doing something with the bands like you have but you gave me some inspiration, thanks!!!!
hello Doc Stogie, Im currently in plans to expand my cigar knowledge and I would like to inquire with you with some great books i can buy for my tobacco library. u seem to be a real authority on the subject can u recommend me some GREAT BOOKS on cigars and tobacco in general ? Id appreaciate it if uc an give me details, no rush at all whenever u got the time to provide them
@MrMiguelSR1 There are only a few books that I can recommend. For general cigar knowledge about all things cigars: The Tobacconist Handbook, by Jorge Armenteros. For cigar reference (Cuban cigars): An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Post-Revolution Havana Cigars. And, for Non-Cuban cigars: Perelman's Pocket Cyclopedia of Cigars (2010 edition). I hope that helps.
Hey Doc. I like to do the same things you do with your cigar bands. I also scan them and print them out on a sheet of paper. Then I actually put a rating of 1-5 on each band on the copy. It helps me remember which cigar was the most pleasant for me and which were not to my taste. It also gives the newer, more unexperienced smokers a guide that I show to my friends and family. I don't show them the results until I survey people who have smoked them because it's my taste so I just put the average.
Hey Doc! Nice seeing you at the cigcon in paso robles! I always thought about one day taking all my saved up bands and laying them out on a coffee table and then putting down a piece of glass over the top. I really like this idea of the scrap book paper though! Even if I wanted to use them later, I could cut them out and the would be on nice acidic free paper! Thanks!
Great to see you too, Colbie. Your idea about a coffee table is cool. I've seen people use a resin to cover the bands. Several coats of clear resin would make a nice surface. Also, I've seen guys lay down bands, put resin, then lay down more bands, and repeat with the resin. The final effect is 3-D. Very cool.
Hi doc cool project. Question for a pro such as yourself: I am starting a cigar company. Can you recommend how and where I can have bands designed and made for me? Thanks! Keep smoking!
Ive seen some really cool ideas on some forums threw out the years. One guy put bands on a poker table. All along the sides where people rest there arms. Another idea I've seen, "which I'm gonna to do to." Is use a normal wooded table and fill it with bands all over the top. I have a little coffee table in my cigar lounge that I'm going to use. Hey Doc do you know if opus X has a very large cigar band of some sort? I would love to put one as my center piece.
Great idea. I hope you make a video of your own project so we can all see it. Sounds like it will be fun too. I believe that the inside of a box of Opus X has a box label, which are typically large. You may want to write to the company and ask them for one. Worth a try...
Hi Doc: My daughter is currently working on a project for me. She is applying cigar bands to an old humidor that has seen better days. She is covering every square inch and when she is done we are going to give it 9 coats of clear varnish. I will then let is sit for at least 1 year before putting cigars in it. I will keep you posted on the project. Pappy
great idea! i just have bags full of bands...and empty scotch bottles i like to keep. time to put them together as a nice display. haha, don't believe i never thought of it before. thanks!
Hey Doc, This is kinda off topic but how do you feel about ordering boxed cigars from the online discounters (Jr's, Famous smoke shop, and Tampa sweethearts)...do they arrive fresh and undamaged or should I stick with paying high prices from the local tobacconist?
My experience with online retailers has been good. I understand your hesitancy of purchasing exclusively from your own local tobacconist, but if you buy a lot of cigars, you need to save money sometimes. However, I would recommend that you continue to support your local retailer, while sometimes making larger purchases from providers where you can save some cash.
Wonderful job, Doc. Your videos are always so good. I came across a Snoopy comic the other day that said, "Happiness is wearing the band from your Dad's cigar." It had a picture of Peppermint Patty admiring her new "ring". I think that would have been pretty cool when I was a kid.
great vids as usual DOC,,i occasionally smoke cigars and wt i do with the bands is simply paste it on my note book and next to it is the cigar review,,,so i cn go through if i ever went through the same stogie aving sm extra bucks for the cigar i want to smoke again
Some great ideas there Doc, Ive been collecting all my bands not really knowing why, I guess I wanted to keep track on how many Ive smoked over the years. I think I'll use your first idea and frame them. also framing my tubos that I collect would look nice as well.
I usually only save a band if I don't already have one in my collection. I usually smoke a Padron 3000 Natural every time I pay a visit to my local tobacconist, so I don't save every single band.
u can also find books online that u can paste the bands to and then write some notes about that certain cigar and with a lil rating for it and kee a record of what cigar u smoked when and how u liked it and if u were to smoke it again later see what changed withwhat u though about it.
I made a desktop humidor a while back and decorated it with pasted on cigar bands...looks pretty cool.

I don't know anything about Houston, per se, but Texas is a great place, in general, to buy cigars. A very cigar-friendly state.
