i'm so used to listening to Callas recordings after 1954 and loved them. but man, those recordings are simply an afterthought of Callas' voice before 1953. it's so so so AMAZING in these pre-1953 recordings! the power! the fullness! the drama! people are so lucky to have seen her before 1953. coolness :D
@fll7181 Your sensations are the same for many opera lovers that generally know Callas singing only in her last years. The criticism on Callas voice (not for acting, neither for singing) are generally concentrated on the word 'ugly'. I think that everyone can judge by himself that the voice of Callas never was 'ugly'. Callas decided to use it at 360° to ameloriate her feeling in acting, and if those performances are still graven in the annals of all times it means that her decision was right.
I love the breezy way she delivers this piece, and the ease with which she enters and exits those perfect trills without ever breaking the melody in order to start or stop a trill. I really wish they would find a recording of the La Scala debut in December of 1951. I have read that she was sick with a cold during this performance here, though I can't really tell.

@gustopheles
She was amazing, and that trill is brilliant. Her Masterclasses at Julliard have some great info about the 'trill' in general.

Incredible.
Completely agree with fll7181 and it is not to diminish anything she sung later.

the voice was much fuller during this period. Nice a trill, phrasing, coloratura, and high note.

Il famoso bolero da "I Vespri Siciliani", col piccolo incidente sul mi acuto finale, che la divina Maria Callas ricupera meravigliosamente!
Grazie molto.
Un grande buongiorno della Francia a tutta l'Italia! :-))
