If you consider Richard Butler to be one of the greatest singers ever, I half expect you to think the same for El Kabong on guitar and Animal on drums. The LSL instrumentals are better, but Jesse Lacey's vocals are waaaay smoother.
I originally thought that Love Spit Love had remade an older, crappier version of this song by some unknown 70's band called "Brand New". I stand corrected - Love Spit Love was the ORIGINAL band to make this song, and has made the best version of it. If you're trying to go to sleep or do yoga, I guess the brand new one can be listened to, but I prefer the Love Spit Love version over it by far.

I first listened to this song in an episode of Pary of Five. I listened to the lyrics and I was 'Wow' . I looked for it until I found it and I have loved this song ever since... Every now and then I come to this video to listen to the marvelous lyrics these guys composed and the great music they selected for it! Richard Butler is one of the all time great singers out there. He is also a great humble man. I met him, and hung out with some of the Psych Furs guys after a show in Ithaca NY years ago. Never forget how down to Earth they are.

@skrason Just curious, have you ever heard the Brand New album, The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me? It is most remarkable. Even if you don't particularly 'like' it, you have to admit it's remarkable. Give it a shot, it's very different from their old sound, back when they covered this song.
Maybe instead of petty arguements over which version is better, you should all just focus on how wonderful this song is. No matter who performs it, this will always be a beautiful song. Brand New were not trying to win anyone over with covering this, they were just acknowledging the band and the track. That's just my two cents.

There's really no point in debating this any more. Richard Butler simply owns the song. That's that. I rest my case. But a small nod to Brand New for having the good taste to tackle this.
Brand New's cover is respectable. But I still prefer this original version--Butler's voice is simply unique, and so perfect I think even Brand New lets a little English accent creep into their rendition. :)
I wish I'd actually been aware of Love Spit Love back in the 90's. It wasn't until recently over the past few yrs that I've learned and fallen in love with them. But, crap having their album(s) back in the 90's would have made the 90's so much more tolerable for me!!!

brand new covered this to tribute a song from their late teenage years. that's it. love spit love fans who get upset need to grow up and realize BRAND NEW COVERED THIS SONG BECAUSE THEY'RE JUST LIKE YOU. they're a band who plays music only because they love it, and they love this song. that's why their cover is so similar. if you can't be mature enough to realize that you're going to spitefully miss out on a band you would love.

It's not Brand New, it's probably Brand New Fans. Check out every cover video on youtube. It's the same thing. One group: Oh the original sucks. Second group: who are these old fogeys covering this song.
I think the hate comes from the non appreciation of where the original came from. Like I said, it's the same type of comments for every similar cover song.

Both the original by Love Spit Love, and the cover by Brand New are good. The cover by Brand New is slightly diffrent. In my opinion, I like the sound from the band of Brand New and the lyrics of Love Spit Love.

@JerzuRF i agree the original is better - brand new are just my favourite band of all time and i thank them for doing their cover so i could here such an amazing original song - tell me what you think of a song by brand new called play crack the sky - the lyrics are beautiful :-) if you want to recommend another great love spit love song then please do - i love hearing why people like songs .

@skrason Just curious, have you ever heard the Brand New album, The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me? It is most remarkable. Even if you don't particularly 'like' it, you have to admit it's remarkable. Give it a shot, it's very different from their old sound, back when they covered this song.

Maybe instead of petty arguements over which version is better, you should all just focus on how wonderful this song is. No matter who performs it, this will always be a beautiful song. Brand New were not trying to win anyone over with covering this, they were just acknowledging the band and the track. That's just my two cents.

Anybody that considers Brand New a pussy boy band like "Fall Out Boy or Panic At The Really God Damn Long Band Name" better reconsider. They just have alternative roots. Daisy and The Devil and God will give you the chills. Anyways nothing touches an original this is wonderful. Brand News cover isn't too shabby though. Again though, nothing touches an original.

Brand New's cover is respectable. But I still prefer this original version--Butler's voice is simply unique, and so perfect I think even Brand New lets a little English accent creep into their rendition. :)

I wish I'd actually been aware of Love Spit Love back in the 90's. It wasn't until recently over the past few yrs that I've learned and fallen in love with them. But, crap having their album(s) back in the 90's would have made the 90's so much more tolerable for me!!!
