What product do you recommend for recording vocal on home computer I have a pc not much to work with I guess a Mac is a start? I meant to ask about mixer, interface etc...
@PingPongProductionz If you're sending it off for mastering, you could bounce the vocals separately (a "stem"). But when doing regular mastering, it's important for everything to be in the mix.
@Moemors That's how I answer most people's questions anyway, haha... Sometimes when people ask me a question, I Google the question word for word and then send them a link to the results page.
@Zazquatch1 Good call. I usually do that. Don't know why I didn't do it for this particular track. We have one guitar player whose pickup picks up a lot of low end. I usually end up rolling off all the way up to 120 Hz with him to fit into a pop/rock band mix.
@TheSinghFIRE No, you set it up as a MIDI controller with the HUI protocol (for control). And in the Playback Engine settings, you set it up for Audio in and out.
@jaronie6 I use Adobe Audition for that. I think Pro Tools 9 now includes an MP3 converter too. Or, you can use something like iTunes. Just Google "how to make an MP3 in iTunes" for step-by-step instructions.
@bdubrecords thnx and your videos are awsome best tourtorals on youtube man im tryn to become big im doin good things right now and if i do come big ill rember you thnx
@vZamfir Sometimes I use a three-prong to two-prong adapter on my monitors' power cords to remove the grounding. There are safer (and unfortunately more expensive) ways to accomplish a ground lift, so you should look into that instead of doing what I'm doing. Also, power conditioners by Furman are great. No matter what, stay safe around electricity, and consult an electrician, if needed, for the safety of you and your gear! I'm not an electrician, so take my advice with a grain of salt!
mastering should be done on full range monitors...everyone has their own technique/taste but it is your last stage, the version the world hears, so use something more critical. be careful with width tools they can throw the mix out of phase... you would benefit from sitting in with a local mastering engineer and seeing his/her process...
otherwise, pretty good tutorial...
though i swear the vocals need a cut at 150hz (not like I can really tell through youtube though.
@ilovesabian1n1 I would think so, but I've never used Garage Band, and I don't know what types of interfaces it supports or how many channels of simultaneous recording it can do.
@theDrumkilla That's true -- IF you're routing more than one thing to the FX. Otherwise, it just creates an extra track. For simple things like snare reverbs, I use FX as inserts. For more complex needs, I use sends, busses, and aux tracks.
@elinnova22 MacBook Pros are hard to beat. But for a more budget-conscious choice, I'd go with a Dell. Just make sure it has Firewire. Other minimum tech specs are on avid (dot) com.

can i use the projectmix to replace my m audio audio interface, i have pro tools 8 m powered and i want the projectmix but i would really like it if it can be used as an interface
@TheMagnumGuitar This was recorded through the M-Audio ProFire Lightbridge and a Yamaha LS9 digital sound board. You can see that setup in the Home Recording Part 1 video.
Hello, the project mix is similar to what other converters interface in terms of quality? how many simultaneous channels can I record with it, since they are only eight entries Balanced? What she has to or better than the competitor Digi 003? I have in my home studio and an octane blue tube, use the delta today 1010 m-audio but I can not write quality, with the project mix can improve the recordings and to extract the full potential of these pres amps? Thank you.
@Renato27ify I don't have anything to directly compare it to, but I hear other interfaces have less noisy preamps. I think you can record more inputs with it, using the S/PDIF digital ins. It's biggest advantage over the Digi 003 is 2x the number of XLR inputs.
@notu8815 I think so. The ProjectMix can work with any DAW that uses the Mackie HUI protocol. So if you set Audition to accept MIDI input and output from the ProjectMix, technically that should work, but I've never tried it.

@Solja4Christ Supposedly, the Digidesign hardware is better, but I don't have a good ear for that. Even when they're turned up pretty high, they sound good to me.
Audition is separate from Creative Suite, which contains Soundbooth - it wasn't replaced. Adobe tries to sell these two aimed at different audiences, you can check on their site.
i need a question answered could you record multiple tracks simultaneous in the software and then go back and do automation on all of the with the project mix I/O
I don't have Logic. I've only used it with Pro Tools, so I'm not sure. However, I do know there is a key combination you have to hold down while you turn it on to get it into Logic mode. (See owner's manual or look up one online.)
your videos are easily the most useful ones that I have seen thus far
but i did wanted to ask you an important question, since I am contemplating buying the projectmix:
do you feel that the project mix preamp are good enough for the whole studio to be wired through that? or would i have to get better (maybe focusrite) preamps?
They're fine for my use, but they do get a little hiss when you turn them up really far. Using focusrite for some inputs might not be a bad idea if you want really clean audio.
God bless you man your very helpful i hope i can hear some more of your upcoming mixes i like the song and its true you should have some more vids posted up mabye some mastering.. keep up the musical talent.. ps let Gods glory shine up on you as if his spirit was hovering over you like a dove.
Thanks! I have some videos posted about mastering that could be considered part 4. But I hope to make time to continue the series beyond that soon. Thanks for the encouragement!
I'd love more in depth info on signal processing. A deeper delve into the processing or raw takes to get them where they are when the mix is completed. From EQ & Compression and beyond. You brushed on this before.
Good idea for a future video. I'm actually a minimalist in that area. I try to get mics with nice smooth frequency responses matched with singers that fit them well. Then, you don't need a lot of EQ, except maybe some low roll-off. I've always found that I do more harm than good by doing too much.
I have the projectmix I/O , actually Ive had it for over 2 years now, and slowly but surely I keep losing channel inputs. It started with channel 1, now if you listen to channel 1 , its nothing but interference and static. I lost channel 2 a month later, and just recently I lost 7 and 8. I dont know what to do about it, I dont think I have warrenty anymore. If you have any advice Id appreciate it. Thanks.
Wow, that doesn't sound good. Sometimes I hear static through channels, but if I power cycle the device, it goes away. (I think it's somewhere in the Firewire connection with my Mac, which goes through an external HD to get there.) You might try different ways of attaching it to your computer (if you use a FW800 to 400 adapter, for instance, changing that somehow). Also, check your I/O setting carefully in the M-Audio FW app and in Pro Tools.
I just bought a Project Mix I/O in it pro tools it only lets me use 2 inputs the other 6 it doesn't list them when you go to the mixer and go to inputs it just says 1 and 2
I used to have strange things like that happen. Make sure you're using the most updated M-Audio FW device driver and the latest version of Pro Tools. You'll want to open the M-Audio config app and make sure it's set to use the XLR inputs. Sounds to me like it's only using the S/PDIF or something. But above all, while you've got free access to Digidesign support, use it! Wear out their phone support because after a few more weeks, it won't be free any more!
Firewire only. And to work with Pro Tools, it must be booted into Pro Tools mode by holding a key down while it turns on. (Details in users manual.) You only have to do this once, and then it stays in that mode until you change it again. After that, you have to change a setting inside Pro Tools to enable MIDI control by the HUI protocol. Again, you only have to do this once, as Pro Tools will remember this setting next time it loads. Again, details in users manual!
You need a Digidesign approved audio device and the software itself. Low end is somewhere around $500. High end is virtually limitless. You could spend as much as you wanted to!
You can't use it as a stand-alone mixer. It's just an input interface for your computer, as well as a control surface that interacts with your DAW software.
As for setting it up, you just install the latest drivers from M-Audio, plug it in, and it's working as an audio input. You have to put it into the right mode (Pro Tools, Logic, etc.), and the details for that are in the manual, as are the details for how to set up the control surface to interact with your DAW through MIDI. But I've never done that with Logic, so I couldn't help you with that. I'd say it's really easy, though.
Yes, using M-Audio's application, you can choose which inputs to monitor in zero-latency. Or, you can turn up the track you're recording to in Pro Tools and hear it with effects applied (but a little bit of latency).
IM HAVIN trouble with audio leveling.... what would be the problem?.. is it my eq or comprettion... but i cant seem to get the sound leveld... it sounds loud in sum parts and low in others please help?
That's something compression would help with. Add a compressor to the track, and set the threshold so that the louder parts are being reduced by about 3:1 or so. You can fine tune all the settings once you get the basics dialed in.
thank you sounded a bit better LOL just the damn vocals are always poppy in places ill use ur advice and see what happens thank you very much ur a life saver
there is a software called "sound booth" by Adobe which is "Auditions" cousin. runs on mac and P.C. just a tip.. lol i prefer macs myself i own one and i use logic pro.... unfortunately i have a presonus firepod.. i am looking forward to buy a project studio soon ive always wanted a control surface its very easy to use but that is when i have the money.. its kinda tough in this economy though.. GOD BLESS!
Good thought. Unfortunately, Sound Booth is a distant cousin. I actually have it but never use it. If you want to know why, check out my video reviewing the differences between Audition and Sound Booth. Thanks for commenting!
A question, Pro tools you are working with is the M-powered, right? Its not the LE? Im asking this because you are using Projectmix, and Im wonder if it works fine with Pro tools LE. Thanks!
Great question. M-Audio products only work with Pro Tools M-Powered. And Digidesign products only work with Pro Tools LE. They are not interchangeable, which is unfortunate since the two versions of Pro Tools are about 99% the same (M-Powered is not as upgradable).
A friend of mine uses Sennheiser HD280's in the studio. I have a pair, and they're pretty good, but I don't like to use earphones at all for mixing or mastering. That being said, sometimes I'll take a quick listen through Bose Tri-Ports just to make sure I'm not missing any subtle elements in the mix. But, generally speaking, your frequency response and stereo imaging is much better on studio monitors.
They're the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX Certified Computer Speaker System. I don't know for sure how accurate they are (flat frequency response, etc.). But I know they sound GOOD! So, while no substitute for real studio monitors, they do make for an excellent second set for comparison.
so you spent over $1000 on a machine that merely control the program(same shit that I have on my $150 keyboard(a midi mixer), but cheaped out on what the audio was being played through. if you use your mouse, and spend $1000 on yours speakers your shit will be better mixed
Hi, robnhay. Thanks for your comments. I appreciate your concern. Actually, the $1,000 I spent on the ProjectMix I/O got me 8 pre-amplified and phantom powered XLR inputs, 8 line inputs, SPDIF I/O, optical I/O, wordclock I/O, MIDI I/O, etc. Plus, motorized faders and the ability to use Pro Tools, which requires an approved device like the ProFire Lightbridge to be attached before even opening.
As for the speakers, I use Roland DS-8 bi-amped 120W monitors when mixing. They cost over $1,000. I only use the Klipsch speakers for mastering, as a way of getting a fresh perspective on the mix. I thought I made this clear in the series of videos, but apparently not. My apologies!
Great Video, I have been using Pro tools M-Powered 8 for about 2 Months and It's very nice. But I find that it is a lot more CPU intensive than Logic Pro 8, which I also use. I wish Pro tools could be as efficient as Logic Pro 8. I guess Digidesign want us to purchase the HD pro tools.
I Find even though I have upgrade my Macbook pro 2.5ghz from 2gigs of ram to 4gig I still get thoughs same errors on occasion, Very frustrating. To be safe when I do live recordings of my five piece band. 16 I/O I use Logic Pro 8, then save it as an OMF file and open it in Pro tools 8. Sound like a lot but I don't trust pro tools m-powered 8 for that kind of project. I is great for editing and mixing I've found.
I have the 2.8 GHz Core2 Duo with 4 GB RAM MacBook Pro, and I still get errors when recording 18 tracks at once in Pro Tools M-Powered. Sometimes recording stops for a CPU overload. Other times, audio blips are made a permanent part of the recording. So, I agree, I may be looking into Logic Pro for recording. Let me ask you this, though: Why do you still edit in Pro Tools? Why not Logic all the way through? I'd be interested to know, since I'm considering buying Logic now...
The main reason I still use Pro Tools M-Powered for editing is the elastic time feature. It's very useful when the drummer falls out of time, or the rhythm guitar is not quite on the beat. I am not saying that Logic Pro 8 can't correct these things, It's that it is a lot easier in Pro Tools M-Powered 8. Logic Pro 8 is fantastic for creating music with Software instruments. You can have a lot of instruments in various channels with out Logic breaking a sweat. Logic has some very good built-in FX
That's what I've always heard -- Logic has better bundled instruments and effects. I'd love to see a video tutorial on practical uses for Pro Tool's elastic audio because I've never really played with it yet...
I actually don't mix with Audition. I just use it to process individual WAV files (as with mastering the final mix that was exported from Pro Tools or pitch correcting a vocal track). I'm sure someone else out there is much better with this program than me. I never have been able to do much with multi-track mixing in Audition, although I know it's quite capable.
My video would be pretty boring-more like a still! Seriously, it doesn't do anything. Works as a soundcard-iTunes plays out to my powered monitors, and the A-B button lights up. That's it! The Mac recognizes the PM, just won't work with it. I really think the issue is in the OS X midi control panel...I just have no clue how to configure it :(
Also, make sure you've got the latest M-Audio drivers installed from their Website. Install them, power down your computer. Plug in the Firewire cord and then power your computer back up.
After all that, start up Pro Tools, making sure your iLok key is in a USB port. After that, you should be good to go. If it gives you some error message, let me know what it is, and we'll go from there.
Great jOB!, can you please do a video on how to hook up the projectmix to the computer, monitors, mics, headphones, ect, i just got one and i want to make sure i hook up everything right for the best sound quality. Keep it up! God Bless!
I'm in the same boat as this guy...having a HELL of a time trying to configure our MacBook Pro to play nicely with the Projectmix using Pro Tools M-Powered 8... Thanks for doing these videos!
I was trying to keep it simple for this brief video, but I'll do a demo of doing it that way sometime soon... I agree that doing it that way gives you a ton more versatility.
I've had no issues with the ProjectMix's inputs being too hot. When I use my mics, the gain knobs stay about centered (with the pad switch set to mic). When I use a keyboard or instrument input, again, the gain knob stays about centered (pad switch in line mode).
The new MacBook Pro's have FireWire 800. You can buy a cheap FW400 adaptor. I use a FW800 hard drive and then daisychain my PM into the HD's FW400 port.
But the regular MacBook's do not have FW at all, so stay away from them!
I've heard the Inputs are quite "hot" on the ProjectMix and that you need to buy connectors to cut some of the input volume, is this the case? I also read a forum from around 2006/07 and it said that the PM only had -10db inputs (no +4), is this any different with the newer ones?
and I thought the new Macbooks didnt have Firewire? or do you have an Expansion Card/PCMCIA card?
Cool

i need a question answered could you record multiple tracks simultaneous in the software and then go back and do automation on all of the with the project mix I/O

@uppergaragerecording Absolutely. I do it all the time!

Hi! Great info thanks very much!
Can you tell me , when you hit the option write function all your inputs turned RED? Mine stay grayed out. Thanks again!
Acustiman 2 years ago
I think you mean record-armed? Yes, when I enable tracks to record, they do turn red, I think. Enabling writing of automation doesn't, though.

will this mixer work with windows vista?

Yes, M-Audio's Website has drivers for Vista 32-bit and 64-bit.

hey bdub.
just bought my M-Audio Project mix and am trying to install it with Logic pro 9 running on my new macbook pro.
this seems to be the exact setup you have minus protools.
did you have to install anything different to get the project mix to work with Logic?
I'd really appreciate your help!
Cheers,
David
dammitdave245 2 years ago
I don't have Logic. I've only used it with Pro Tools, so I'm not sure. However, I do know there is a key combination you have to hold down while you turn it on to get it into Logic mode. (See owner's manual or look up one online.)
bdubrecords 2 years ago
Ah, I meant minus logic XD
I've just managed to get it sorted, turned out it was an issue with the firewire cable I had!
Your videos are fantastic btw, really helped me with getting to grips with the Project Mix and Audition! Cheers.
dammitdave245 2 years ago
Thanks! Glad I could help.
bdubrecords 2 years ago
Hi thanks for these amazing videos
your videos are easily the most useful ones that I have seen thus far
but i did wanted to ask you an important question, since I am contemplating buying the projectmix:
do you feel that the project mix preamp are good enough for the whole studio to be wired through that? or would i have to get better (maybe focusrite) preamps?
thanks!
Leo
leochanman 2 years ago
They're fine for my use, but they do get a little hiss when you turn them up really far. Using focusrite for some inputs might not be a bad idea if you want really clean audio.

Thanks! I have some videos posted about mastering that could be considered part 4. But I hope to make time to continue the series beyond that soon. Thanks for the encouragement!
bdubrecords 2 years ago
I'd love more in depth info on signal processing. A deeper delve into the processing or raw takes to get them where they are when the mix is completed. From EQ & Compression and beyond. You brushed on this before.
metalfrets 2 years ago
Good idea for a future video. I'm actually a minimalist in that area. I try to get mics with nice smooth frequency responses matched with singers that fit them well. Then, you don't need a lot of EQ, except maybe some low roll-off. I've always found that I do more harm than good by doing too much.
bdubrecords 2 years ago
I have the projectmix I/O , actually Ive had it for over 2 years now, and slowly but surely I keep losing channel inputs. It started with channel 1, now if you listen to channel 1 , its nothing but interference and static. I lost channel 2 a month later, and just recently I lost 7 and 8. I dont know what to do about it, I dont think I have warrenty anymore. If you have any advice Id appreciate it. Thanks.
dvwicked 2 years ago
Wow, that doesn't sound good. Sometimes I hear static through channels, but if I power cycle the device, it goes away. (I think it's somewhere in the Firewire connection with my Mac, which goes through an external HD to get there.) You might try different ways of attaching it to your computer (if you use a FW800 to 400 adapter, for instance, changing that somehow). Also, check your I/O setting carefully in the M-Audio FW app and in Pro Tools.
bdubrecords 2 years ago
I just bought a Project Mix I/O in it pro tools it only lets me use 2 inputs the other 6 it doesn't list them when you go to the mixer and go to inputs it just says 1 and 2
ClixProductions01 2 years ago
I used to have strange things like that happen. Make sure you're using the most updated M-Audio FW device driver and the latest version of Pro Tools. You'll want to open the M-Audio config app and make sure it's set to use the XLR inputs. Sounds to me like it's only using the S/PDIF or something. But above all, while you've got free access to Digidesign support, use it! Wear out their phone support because after a few more weeks, it won't be free any more!

how would you use the interface such as a mackie to control the plugins while mixing
youngcoop910 2 years ago
what kind of recording software do you use?
IDmann700 2 years ago
Pro Tools M-Powered for recording and mixing. Adobe Audition for mastering and sound editing.
bdubrecords 2 years ago
do you need to buy specific audio mixers or can i just buy any one?
IDmann700 2 years ago
Pro Tools only works with interfaces by Digidesign and M-Audio.
bdubrecords 2 years ago
Dose Presonus interfaces work with Pro Tools?
Because I swear I've seen the fire studio hooked up to Pro Tools.
6223tonyk 2 years ago
I just read somewhere online that they do, but I don't have any personal experience with that. Sounds cool, though...

james07jamesjames 2 years ago
does the project mix work instantly with PT
or does it have to be set up plugin by plugin?
and does it have USB?!?!?!
robnhay 2 years ago
Firewire only. And to work with Pro Tools, it must be booted into Pro Tools mode by holding a key down while it turns on. (Details in users manual.) You only have to do this once, and then it stays in that mode until you change it again. After that, you have to change a setting inside Pro Tools to enable MIDI control by the HUI protocol. Again, you only have to do this once, as Pro Tools will remember this setting next time it loads. Again, details in users manual!

I love the song you're mixing! Nice video. I'm a logic man thoguh.

How can i get pro tools, what do i need to run pro tools and what would be the price range? Thank you.
levieames 2 years ago
You need a Digidesign approved audio device and the software itself. Low end is somewhere around $500. High end is virtually limitless. You could spend as much as you wanted to!
bdubrecords 2 years ago
Does the software work on any type of PC? Do you have msn where we can discuss further? thanks
levieames 2 years ago
hi there!
i was wondering if you might be able to help with some questions i have about the project mix?
can you use it as a standalone mixer without firewire plugged in?
would you be able to make a video showing how to set it up with a macbook (i'm hoping to run the project mix with Logic 9)?
i'd really appreciate your help =)
cheers
dammitdave245 2 years ago
You can't use it as a stand-alone mixer. It's just an input interface for your computer, as well as a control surface that interacts with your DAW software.
bdubrecords 2 years ago
As for setting it up, you just install the latest drivers from M-Audio, plug it in, and it's working as an audio input. You have to put it into the right mode (Pro Tools, Logic, etc.), and the details for that are in the manual, as are the details for how to set up the control surface to interact with your DAW through MIDI. But I've never done that with Logic, so I couldn't help you with that. I'd say it's really easy, though.
bdubrecords 2 years ago
cheers for your help - cleared up a lot of questions.
one more - just to be 100% sure - if i plugged a guitar in (line or POD) would i be able to hear it through monitors plugged into my outputs?
also, if i were to want to play music from itunes through the mixer, is it possible?
cheers for your help!
dammitdave245 2 years ago
Yes, using M-Audio's application, you can choose which inputs to monitor in zero-latency. Or, you can turn up the track you're recording to in Pro Tools and hear it with effects applied (but a little bit of latency).
I use mine all the time with iTunes!

IM HAVIN trouble with audio leveling.... what would be the problem?.. is it my eq or comprettion... but i cant seem to get the sound leveld... it sounds loud in sum parts and low in others please help?
nellywwe 2 years ago

Hello, great video, congrats!
A question, Pro tools you are working with is the M-powered, right? Its not the LE? Im asking this because you are using Projectmix, and Im wonder if it works fine with Pro tools LE. Thanks!
EduTred 2 years ago
Great question. M-Audio products only work with Pro Tools M-Powered. And Digidesign products only work with Pro Tools LE. They are not interchangeable, which is unfortunate since the two versions of Pro Tools are about 99% the same (M-Powered is not as upgradable).
bdubrecords 2 years ago
did you bounce it to another software just for mastering ?
rfao90 2 years ago
Yes, I bounced to a stereo file, which I brought into Adobe Audition for mastering on a PC.

HI. Iam loking for some professional studio headphones. Can you tell what are the best now on the market?
CarlosPinto88 2 years ago
A friend of mine uses Sennheiser HD280's in the studio. I have a pair, and they're pretty good, but I don't like to use earphones at all for mixing or mastering. That being said, sometimes I'll take a quick listen through Bose Tri-Ports just to make sure I'm not missing any subtle elements in the mix. But, generally speaking, your frequency response and stereo imaging is much better on studio monitors.

Im sorry, I couldnt hear the part where you mentioned the speakers you brought from Best Buy. What was the name again?
corndogers564 2 years ago
They're the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX Certified Computer Speaker System. I don't know for sure how accurate they are (flat frequency response, etc.). But I know they sound GOOD! So, while no substitute for real studio monitors, they do make for an excellent second set for comparison.
bdubrecords 2 years ago
so you spent over $1000 on a machine that merely control the program(same shit that I have on my $150 keyboard(a midi mixer), but cheaped out on what the audio was being played through. if you use your mouse, and spend $1000 on yours speakers your shit will be better mixed
robnhay 2 years ago
Hi, robnhay. Thanks for your comments. I appreciate your concern. Actually, the $1,000 I spent on the ProjectMix I/O got me 8 pre-amplified and phantom powered XLR inputs, 8 line inputs, SPDIF I/O, optical I/O, wordclock I/O, MIDI I/O, etc. Plus, motorized faders and the ability to use Pro Tools, which requires an approved device like the ProFire Lightbridge to be attached before even opening.
bdubrecords 2 years ago

Donaldalbert 2 years ago
I agree. I even get CPU overload errors every now and then.
bdubrecords 2 years ago
I Find even though I have upgrade my Macbook pro 2.5ghz from 2gigs of ram to 4gig I still get thoughs same errors on occasion, Very frustrating. To be safe when I do live recordings of my five piece band. 16 I/O I use Logic Pro 8, then save it as an OMF file and open it in Pro tools 8. Sound like a lot but I don't trust pro tools m-powered 8 for that kind of project. I is great for editing and mixing I've found.
Donaldalbert 2 years ago
I have the 2.8 GHz Core2 Duo with 4 GB RAM MacBook Pro, and I still get errors when recording 18 tracks at once in Pro Tools M-Powered. Sometimes recording stops for a CPU overload. Other times, audio blips are made a permanent part of the recording. So, I agree, I may be looking into Logic Pro for recording. Let me ask you this, though: Why do you still edit in Pro Tools? Why not Logic all the way through? I'd be interested to know, since I'm considering buying Logic now...
bdubrecords 2 years ago
The main reason I still use Pro Tools M-Powered for editing is the elastic time feature. It's very useful when the drummer falls out of time, or the rhythm guitar is not quite on the beat. I am not saying that Logic Pro 8 can't correct these things, It's that it is a lot easier in Pro Tools M-Powered 8. Logic Pro 8 is fantastic for creating music with Software instruments. You can have a lot of instruments in various channels with out Logic breaking a sweat. Logic has some very good built-in FX
Donaldalbert 2 years ago
That's what I've always heard -- Logic has better bundled instruments and effects. I'd love to see a video tutorial on practical uses for Pro Tool's elastic audio because I've never really played with it yet...

Noob Question! How do you record drums, with a inter face that only has 2 mic inputs? Or would i be better off using a machine?
capufool 2 years ago
can you make a video on mixing using adobe audition
wizardm2000 2 years ago
I actually don't mix with Audition. I just use it to process individual WAV files (as with mastering the final mix that was exported from Pro Tools or pitch correcting a vocal track). I'm sure someone else out there is much better with this program than me. I never have been able to do much with multi-track mixing in Audition, although I know it's quite capable.
bdubrecords 2 years ago
I've actually had a terrible time lately getting PT8 to work with the M-Audio ProFire Lightbridge. I'm about at my wit's end.
If you all can upload a video or describe your symptoms a little bit more with the ProjectMix I/O and PT8, I might be able to help.
bdubrecords 2 years ago
My video would be pretty boring-more like a still! Seriously, it doesn't do anything. Works as a soundcard-iTunes plays out to my powered monitors, and the A-B button lights up. That's it! The Mac recognizes the PM, just won't work with it. I really think the issue is in the OS X midi control panel...I just have no clue how to configure it :(
jdalamo 2 years ago
Make sure it's in Pro Tools mode. Power it off. Hold down AUX 1 while powering it back on. That might be it.
bdubrecords 2 years ago
Also, make sure you've got the latest M-Audio drivers installed from their Website. Install them, power down your computer. Plug in the Firewire cord and then power your computer back up.
bdubrecords 2 years ago
After all that, start up Pro Tools, making sure your iLok key is in a USB port. After that, you should be good to go. If it gives you some error message, let me know what it is, and we'll go from there.
bdubrecords 2 years ago
Great jOB!, can you please do a video on how to hook up the projectmix to the computer, monitors, mics, headphones, ect, i just got one and i want to make sure i hook up everything right for the best sound quality. Keep it up! God Bless!

really big mistake inserting reverb on the track it self, allways use an aux
ragnarthor10 2 years ago
I've had no issues with the ProjectMix's inputs being too hot. When I use my mics, the gain knobs stay about centered (with the pad switch set to mic). When I use a keyboard or instrument input, again, the gain knob stays about centered (pad switch in line mode).
The new MacBook Pro's have FireWire 800. You can buy a cheap FW400 adaptor. I use a FW800 hard drive and then daisychain my PM into the HD's FW400 port.
But the regular MacBook's do not have FW at all, so stay away from them!
bdubrecords 3 years ago
I've heard the Inputs are quite "hot" on the ProjectMix and that you need to buy connectors to cut some of the input volume, is this the case? I also read a forum from around 2006/07 and it said that the PM only had -10db inputs (no +4), is this any different with the newer ones?
and I thought the new Macbooks didnt have Firewire? or do you have an Expansion Card/PCMCIA card?
Sorry for all the questions lol
Nice video, full of good info =)
