ironpyrite, flint, quarts, carbon steel also comes from rock ore. You have tought me many things that my dad would have tought me if I was smart enouph too listen when he was still alive. I was just too young and thought I missed the chance to learn.i do not have a vid camera.maybe someday.
Is anyone teaching off grid living skills? Not all of us want to be found in 72 hours... does the lessons learned provide long term survival skills or are they more for lost travelers? How off grid is Cody...does he enjoy any modern conveniences? One can't avoid property tax, so Off Grid seems to be just "roughing it" for the principle of it.
wow this one sounds cool for practice i'll try it out when i go camping, i won't participate but i'll try it anyways.. the part of leaving no trace, well that one i don't know how to.... if you have it here in youtube i'll gladly learn it

is that all we have to do to win a small knife? maybe I can also stand on my head and juggle golf balls for you......the prize is not equal to the challenge
@bash186 you have missed the whole point of this brother, it is about Owning your skills, understanding and locating resources, multi purpose items, the next fire, and learning. The prize is only for bragging rights. By completing this challenge and watching others videos we learn together. In truth, I could complete this in a hour or less, that is not to say I am good but to say If I can do it then it cant be that tough!
@wildernessoutfitters dave bro,you sure must be patient!I'm just cracking up reading these post's people are making, they just ain't gettin it,lol.can people in new zealand enter the challenge's you set or just the state's?if I have free time I'll try.lit a fire with my ferrel rod and tried to make a primal vessel, was lot's of fun.thank's for the instruction.
@wildernessoutfitters sorry to sound so negative, in truth, I had one really bad day.But at the same time, I don't want to go out in 15 degree weather to compete in a time trial,I am already confident in my ability, but I DO appreciate that your response was a very considerate one
@bash186 You idiot! It is a nice knife, but I have plenty of knives. This is about if you know more you need less. Shut up and listen if you want to learn. Dave is an American Hero who has taught me so much. I am honored by his teachings and if I won a little knife I would be fine with it! Proud of you Dave.
@dtraughber sorry you dislike me so much as to call me an idiot. I simplt have no desire to go out in 20degree weather and compete in a time trial for a knife. I can start a fire just fine, with the tools mentioned ,and have been doing so for about 5 years..I am simplt saying, If you offer a PRIZE, make it suitable to the challenge.Or just issue a challenge
@bash186 Wow what a whiny bitch! You do realize he's giving away something for nothing right? All you have to do is make a video, which is free? Some people's kids...
@bash186 i used to play soccer when i was a little kid, i had to go to practice about 3 times a week plus give up saturdays to play in the games. when it was all said in done i had a little bobble head trophy made of plastic. i gave up a lot of my time to get that little piece of shit trophy, but ill tell you what it was worth every second.
I hate facebook and i hate hitting my knives with stones ;) Good luck to all the participants, but this challenge is beyond my capacity (and i'm sure i won't be alone)... Just watched some episodes of Dual Survival - we all know Dave, but Cody is a great guy too - a hobbit on steroids :)
@wildernessoutfitters Dave--I went to facebook and can't see the link to the winning video nor anywhere on that facebook page to leave this comment. Do I have to be your facebook friend to see it? I signed up for the mailing list.
Damn.... I've spent month trying to find stones that can be used for sparks. We have mostly Limestone (like calcimum or something) but sparking stones are a pain to find
My skill set stopped at making fire and boiling water...I'm thinking "cool"...and then Dave starts adding in the other requirements. Maybe it's time to attend a Pathfinder training. : )
Looking forward to seeing what people come up with.
Dave, I think you are doing one Hell of a Good Job. You are doing your country one outstanding service by posting these videos. I’ve been watching for quite some time now, and even for an old country boy I’m learning something new every day. Your postings have played a major part in that education. In February I’m setting out on a threw hike on the Appalachian Trail and I’ll be well armed with this knowledge. Thank You
I only have two difficulties with being able to finish this challenge...One, I live on the coast and there is plenty of sand and clay, but not much in the way of strikable rocks. Two, I do not own a camera capable of video recording. BUT, I am going to complete as much of the challenge as possible for my own practice! Thanks Mr. C!

@bash186 Hey bro, doing something like this is not very difficult at all and I'm 13 obviously you lack basic wilderness living skills.

If this wasn't a race I'd do it, but I was out shooting for a separate challenge today.
Ya, I get the 'field expedient' argument, but with schedules of normal life, I think pushing for creativity and showing skills is important too.
