What happened to Australia's indigenous people is closer to Native Americans than Afro Americans. Firstly they were already here when Europeans came to Australia. Their children, especially half cast were taken from parents & put into homes run by christian churches. Christianity was complicit in their treatment. Unlike the US, Australia's Govt has never had a policy of slavery. Even the 1st Governor of Australia was opposed to slavery. BTW did you know the bible supports slavery?

They tried trading with the locals but they just ignored Cook & his trinkets. By the time the First Fleet arrived in 1788 slavery had already been abolished in England & the colony in Australia followed British law.

I have friends who have been there and they say the white people were very racist there. It depends where you are, there tends to be less racism in the cities than in country areas but of course a lot depends on the individual. I am white British heritage (3rd gen Australian) & was bought up to respect all people as that - people - irrespective of their background. What I have noticed is that recent migrants are often more racist than people born here. Yes wrongs have been done but Kevin Rudd has begun the process of positive change.

He was apologizing to the "stolen generations" (google it) - the children of indigenous families who were taken from their parents & bought up in orphanages run by christian churches. This continued up to the 1970s so he was apologizing for things past govts had done. They believed they were doing the right thing as many were living a traditional hunter/gatherer lifestye. But it was cultural genocide - destroying their culture & family ties that caused many social problems to this day.
