Political BS! Lincoln's "Proclamation" was just that, it didn't free anyone- it just said it did. The Confederate States simply ignored anything from the US. In the states and occupied U.S. territory in which he actually could free the enslaved people- he chose NOT to.

The only reason he freed the slaves from the south was because the South was making all the money and the north could not survive without the slaves. The south didnt want to release the slaves so the north went to war with the south to free the slaves into northern slavery which we are currently in.

The emancipation proclamation only freed slaves in the succeeded states. It didn't free them on boarder states. He freed the slaves to use them as pawns. He was a racist man.

By enforcing a majority free state rule, he left the right to free the slaves in the hands of the remaining loyal slave states. He also put an enormous burden on them to do so by making the vestigial slave culture disdainful. The last remaining slave institutions revoked slavery on their own without federal rule, just as Lincoln designed....Brilliant strategy...brilliant

i remember reading that old abe sead if the south came back to the union they could keep slaves. then later when books like uncle toms cabin along with public opinion about slaves changing he backed it.

hold on. Uncle Tom's Cabin was published before the war. Abe Lincoln was initially for stopping the expansion of slavery into the west, not for banning it. He rose to power because public opinion in the north was riding with his position, and because the democrats were divided three times over. Sorry, but you had it totally backwards.

Lincoln disliked slavery from the beginning and wanted it banned, but was willing to accept it in the south as a way to preserve the union. He wanted to isolate and make the institution untenable by preventing its spread into the territories. He knew that limiting it's growth would eventually turn majority public opinion against it. His ultimate plan was to ban it, not by federal action, but by public opinion.

Thanks for correcting me. History is complex enough that its hard to explain everything in a few hundred characters. But yes, Lincoln was an abolitionist, and the South knew it. I think they seceded more because they knew, like Lincoln did, that limiting the expansion of slavery would ultimately lead to its destruction.

The US Civil War was really about state sovereignty. The South didn't like the US Gov't telling them how to run their states' business. Later on it became about human rights and freeing the slaves.

I definitely think ending slavery was a good thing, but people demonize the Confederacy too much. The southern elite probably pushed the war for the right to own slaves, but I'm positive that 98% of the Confederate soldiers had their own, very different reasons for fighting. Why would they fight to keep domestic outsourcing of their jobs legal?

Freeing the slaves was a just action and long overdue, but the war killed many, many people on both sides who had no interest in keeping slavery legal.

A war to free four-million human beings from slavery is definitely a war for human rights. Had the Southern States not insisted on their right to bring slaves into the western territories, there might had been no Civil War to begin with.

This video suggests the Emancipation Proclamation was released in 1864. It was announced in 1862 and the final form issued on 1 January 1863.
