  • thanks for posting this, a friend of mine found this same record in his dads stuff when the old man passed away, we never listened to it though because we had nothing to play it on. I'm calling my friend on the phone right now to tell him I found this gem posted on Youtube.

  • How rare is this record? I never heard it before. This is old bluegrass (hillbilly is what they used to call it).

  • There is a new archive system to play old records like this with zero damage to them. It uses lasers to read the high and low points on the record like scanning terrain on a mountain. The archivist only have them now. It then uses a computer to reproduce what all that data would sound like. You can then do some audio magic to remove the static, and fill in any parts that are missing. It will even work on broken wax cylinder Edison recordings. Science and technolgy is amazing.

  • I looked that up a while back, but a thousand dollars is a little steep. Especially having it traveling over seas by mail

  • this reminds me of Fiddlin' John Carson.

  • that awesome! i'd pay some good money for that shit!

  • thats a sweet player dude.

  • This vaguely reminds me of a recording of Run Nigger Run played on a radio station in Patterole TX. Damn shame to lose these classic songs to time and pc. Hell you can't even find Bugs Bunny DVDs anymore without Whoopie at the start giving some anti-white speech.

  • Sounds like you guys are computer peaple man if you could play all the old records here on this vid site you'd have everyone here than anywhere else I love that old music to bad this country has gone down hill and forgot about true music and good times now music is like that rap shit and I'm talkin country they have turned it to rap rockin country they destroyed a god givin talint and turned it to crap well you guys keep on doing what you do it's great someone has hart for real music.

  • I'd love to hear that song better I can't understand the words that good but I love that record player and your taste for music.

  • Hey bud I like the music but play it on a better record player I'd love to hear that better but fuck yah I love it and I love that player old and looks well takin care of good day brother.

  • can you get me some lyrics? its only a couple of lines

  • Sorry, but no. try googling Gid tanner Nigger in woodpile.

  • Good video. I find history fascinating. If you ever wanted to make a copy of this album you can pick up I think it's called a a usb record player recorder at Best Buy. My friend bought one and ripped an album and put it online a while back. It sounded amazing.

  • This has been recorded by Bill Monroe under the title Stony Creek. Instrumental, no words.

  • You're torturing your records this way.... Straight pins?!!!!

The right equipment works wonders... They do wonders with turntables these days!

  • I am only using scratched 78s. I use a diamond 78 needle on the ones with very little scratches, I also already have this recorded to the computer

  • You'd be surprised how good a "scratched" 78 can sound like if you take care of it... sound can be pulled off of it and cleaned up very nicely... playing records like that is what is making it unplayable very quickly.

  • Yes, That is what I do on my computer with a recording program. Yes it is true the clicks can be removed, but some scratches would damage my needle and wear it out faster, since diamond needles are getting harder to find, I am being chancy. Right now I am using leftover stock from the 70s

  • Correct 78 stili aren't hard to find at all. You can also get custom sized ones that do wonders with worn records. Also keep in mind, that records were made completely differently back then. With the older "78"'s, there was no actual speed standard so they would tend to vary from 60 to 90 rpm and sometimes more than that. The EQ'ing was completely different as well. Even with the more "modern" 78s, there was no standard EQ curve. This is why 78s often don't sound good on modern equipment.

  • nigger in the woodpile, nigger in the shade. tryin to go to heaven, get a glass o" lemonade!!! that's hilarious!!!

  • Tune isn't that great. Ehhh... kinda dumb. Recording is a 1920's Columbia, not 1940's.

  • It is a 1920s record on a 1940s record player dumb ass. Read the info

  • o.k. you right since we say nigga, it ok for whites to say nigger. matter fact come on down to Baltimore, or DC maybe even Compton and say it loud as you can over and over again til you draw a crowd. that should be fun for you.

  • Yeah.... Let's welcome him to the Baltimore Inner Harbor.

  • Great job bring the old sounds of our past back.

The old records and books of the real south are disappearing fast.

  • im riped dreat song

  • I can't help thinking what it would be like if Big Smith covered this tune - they'd catch so much crap from the PC Mafia/Gestapo, but at the same time it'll be almost worth it just to see the look of shock on their highly offended faces!

  • I'd like to see Big Smith do a cover of this song!

  • Does anyone know any good oldies bluegrass from like the 40's ???

  • I agree 100$ about what you said about the song if young THUGS can use the word nigger then whats the big deal. People these days get offended to easy! Thats a neat looking radio combo.

  • Thanks - enjoyed the journey 'round your record player too!

  • cant really hear the song, but the old silvertone phono is cool, my nigga!

  • she's a toe-tapper alright!

  • This is not bluegrass.

  • thank you, glad i'm not the only one, its old time

  • Yeah, it's technically old-time, but most people don't make the distinction.

  • You guys want to see something funny? Go watch the video called "Nigger hatin me." Look for the black guy singing it!! Rotflmao

  • Black people suck. They get mad about this song, but they watch BET and buy rap and hip hop CDs that are way more anti-nigger than this song is.

  • So what? Who cares? Why are you so concerned with what black people are doing? I'm so sick of this generic argument, it makes no sense- and most people know that.

  • i'm soo sorry, but as a player of old-time music from north Georgia i love this tune. It is a popular tune to play atleast with my friends. If anyone is looking for a way to perform this tune infront of black people just substitute the N-word with "hippie" it is also very funny. the same melody is also known as "wild Horse", "stoney point" and "wild horse at stoney point" which is a five art tune.

  • yup, that's what I do too. I substitute an inoffensive word that has the same stressed syllables. My 5 year old's name is Sammy, so "run n-word run" becomes "run sammy run". the kid loves it and no one's offended.

  • I've heard "devil" and "preacher" substituted for the word in question as well.

  • We always used "preacher" as a substitute.

I never thought much of this tune. There's so many better ones. Love the Skillet Lickers though!

"All coons look alike to me" -Riley Puckett

  • Wasn't he blind?

  • As much as I love Gid Tanner and authentic music, I really believe the N-word needs to be expunged whenever it used like this. It is very very unkind and just plain wrong.

  • I have no way in beeping nigger out. IF I could, I wouldn't because it is part of the song and the song is already scratchy and hard to hear anyway

  • it looks like you had to replace the tone arm with modern one..

  • oh booo hoo hoo...the word nigger is an important part of our American history : ) : ) :D You can't erase our history you commie book burner. NIGGER NIGGER! haha freedom of speech in action.

  • Actually, I wouldn't mind you getting your wealth redistributed.

  • Of course you wouldn't. You people all are thieves and freeloaders who want to take things from other people and have people give things to them. You'd make a natural commie pinko! haha. Oh and I can say nigger on youtube , youtube respects freedom of speech it's great. In this pussy whipped PC world it feels very liberating to just say..nigger. Try it. : D

  • Don't those guys still play together sometimes? I wonder if this little gem is still in their setlist. The crazy thing is, this song was probably a huge hit when it was released. But the thing that really makes me uneasy, is thinking about the people that stumble upon this, and are in no way whatsoever offended by the song, and instead say something to themselves like "Sheeeooooot!! I know'd that tune!! I don't care who y'are; Thas' gooood, right there!!"

I mean, it is 2008, right?

  • No, the Skillet Lickers disbanded in the early 1930s!

McMichen hated Gid, and said "He ruined every goddam record we ever made!"

  • 1940's is the record player. I know about Gid Tanner. stopped recording around 1930 and recorded in the 1920's.

  • there was actually a movie called nigger in a woodpile.

  • Intresting title.

  • When I was a kid back in the 60's I had an old silvertone single pick up electric guitar- had a crappy amp built into the case. I wish I still had that bitch.

    Eddie Van halen

  • When commenting on my videos. DON'T CURSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yep, I had one, too. Not a bad little axe.

There are some on E-bay right now.

  • whatever happened to the old tonearm?

  • I still have it. it was way too heavy for a typical neadle cartridge. The orginal had victrola needles

  • did you ripped this arm out of a 70's kiddie player?

  • Yes. An old broken Barbie disco one to be excact.

  • Check my channel for part 2 that shows what i've done to it

  • some folks say a nigger won't steal- i caught three in my cornfield. one had a bushel, one had a peck, one had a roastin ear hung round his neck!! OH baby I LOVE IT !!!!
