We could argue who's the best in that era until the end of days and still couldn't come up with a conclusion. I've a much simpler opinion: They're all supermen. In those days, it was either win or hospital! All when they were on wild 2-strokes, no traction control, finicky carbon brakes, generation-old tyre and chassis technology.
I think Rossi would have been afraid to race on these monster bikes. The legends of this era had to control these monsters with wicked skills and balls of steel.
@dredgewalker Well, actually Rossi won a title with the 500cc in 2001 and fought bravely in 2000 at his first year, coming only behind of Kenny Roberts Jr.
@rafael +++this vids. it's greatest... this was era of legend riders... current perspective in this vids. we see all luxury of Wayne's talent aggressive, pushy, attractive on the wilde two stroke monsters a 130 kg weights.... I also like Shwantz but... he was always in back of Wayne... Rossi similar but lots of electronics support a fluid four stroke... he had no competition of 5 champion same time on start line ... great vids @rafael++++ give us still
Yes, Wayne Rainey was "The Man". Absolutely fearless, in a world without traction control, etc. he was able to harness the 500's power in a "controlled chaos", Steering with the rear wheel, his point and shoot style is just f*ing amazing. Who knows how long he might have dominated MotoGP. He was Epic.
I am not taking away from the other great riders of his time...and now. Rossi is "The Man" of this era.....but even he will tell you the 500's were all but impossible to control.

Is it me, or did SBK racing seem much faster back then? Rainey was so awesome, his battles with Schwantz were always so epic, Lucky Strike against the Marlboro Man!
rainey was the best of all time in my opinion, these bikes were raw power in every sense of the word, and yes this was the best era of motorcycle racing,i think they should go back to racing 2 stroke no computers traction control etc just man and machine
The early nineties saw Rainey, Schwantz, Doohan, Lawson and Gardner all racing at the same time. I think you cant find another era when the talent pool was so deep.
There is no question about it that wayne rainey was the best. He was the fastest on unristricted, No big bang Ignition, no traction control, no powerband machines. So many crashes also this era.. Also Schwantz was very fast but he was not consistently fast enough... HE was champion only whan wayne was out..
As for Doohan, he only cut it with big bang, when Wayne and Kevin were gone...
Maybe Rossi is contender for the title the best...
Look at his comeback this year with a shattered leg!
The rainey, schwantz, doohan, era was i think the best gp era, those guys raced 500cc two strokes hard and they did'nt have the electroics they have these days, legends.I will always remember those days, raniey & schwantz are my hero's.

VÍDEO MUITO LEGAL, RAFAEL ...
WAYNE RAINEY FOI UM DOS MELHORES PILOTOS QUE JÁ CORRERAM NO MUNDIAL.
SE ELE NÃO TIVESSE SE ACIDENTADO NA ITÁLIA, SERIA UM DOS MAIORES VENCEDORES DE TODOS OS TEMPOS.
NA ERA DAS 500 DE DOIS TEMPOS O PILOTO ERA DE OUTRO TIPO. AS MOTOS LEVANTAVAM NAS CURVAS, SAIAM DE TRASEIRA TODO O TEMPO, VÁRIOS PILOTOS NA PISTA, ...
QUE TEMPO BOM ...
VALEU PELAS RECORDAÇÕES, AMIGÃO ...
