I. Hannah Arendt's reflections upon the Eichmann trial were published as "The Banality of Evil." Evil, then, ought also to be considered apart from the occasional ranting, murderous figure in history. Evil also occurs via quiet deliberation, as, e.g., consensual policy among a Power elite. It is the evil of a powerful minority who, e.g., vote "yes" to war, mindful of the lucrative nature of the project.
II. If, as a learned Rabbi once argued, the love of money (or the Power which cultivates capital gain) is the root of all of our evils, then the would-be "Masters of the Universe"--i.e., these Ivy League future M.B.A.s, financiers, attorneys, etc., illustrate the banality of American evil. They have already deliberated upon their businesses which will enslave a working class--i.e., deny them all but subsistence wages. They have already determined their entitlements, while yet grad students.
III. They have already "Other-ized" the working class, i.e., individuals of the working class are no longer human beings, but "unfortunates." Capitalism cannot be rehabilitated, i.e., it is informed solely by greed for personal gain. It must be stopped. That is the banal evil. The overt evil of America exists also. Six-year olds working twelve hour days in New England mills. Blacks crucified throughout the Southland for hundreds of years.
IV. Native Americans all but annihilated. Literally millions of men, women, and children destroyed--all for material gain. This is OUR holocaust. This is OUR disgrace. Evil America.
I read about that, someone at WarnerBooks decided that technical journals, university textbooks and monographs were a prime market they just had to get into [sarcasm] and so they bought a publisher. When the CEO of Warners saw the ad for the Herman/Chomsky book and went and personally read it, he was not happy
Fritz Bolkestein, neoliberal who made sure the internal market of the EU would be as 'free' as possible. The bolkestein-directive received huge protest and had no 'draagvlak' as he likes to call it. Which is public consensus (there was, rather, an uproar against it).
That official was Bolkenstein if I remember correctly and he was responsible for the liberalisation of jobs. Well, his name was in the directive. It was "weakened" by social elite s who feared for the position of the "pampered european workers" who would be paid the same(less than they currently earn) as the periphery workers.

2 is old enough. Chomsky should be read to newborns to prepare them for the real world.
