Master, Help ur fan out please~! I wish to reformat my drive, but the problem is that it asks me to back-up the system files on a DVD drive. My computer did not come with a partitioned drive which has all the system files. If I burn all the system files on a DVD disk and try to reset my computer, will this work? What are the risks? I am afraid of pressing "restore to factory condition" and then my computer saying "Opps, I don't understand the dvd drive (even though I told u to burn it) Help PLZ!
i had my PC for a few years before i formatted it. It was running fine, although obviously not as great as when i first bought it. The reason i formatted it was due to some stupid virus which i honestly have no idea where i got it from.
=/ reformatting is a double edged sword, it can help you fix your computing blues but also cause others. if the conputer has multiple passworded accounts then you gonna find it hard to get the files off the HDD, also if you are using a pre built PC like a packard bell or a HP unit you might fail to notice that the recovery system relies on a hidden partition, which if removed will render your recovery CD / DVDs unusable.
@konataspecial a good tip to those who have hidden sectors on thier HDD is to get a second drive of the same size as the first and make a complete dump of the drive *it normally copy the hidden sectors too* then you can use the recovery system till on the first drive and do a drive wipe through that, not only do you have a exact backup of your old system but also you have a safety net of you do mess it up as you can just recopy the drive and try again with no harm done
@Richard1125 format the hard drive. Take out the actual hard drive on your dell get a dock station and format that hard drive put it back on the Dell and reinstall the OS. Hope it helps.

Thats how Ive always done it on my machines, make one 20 Gig partition for nothing but Windows and the basics, designate that "Local Disk C" and the other the rest of the drive and then make seperate folders on it for all of my other stuff, so that if something happens to Windows, I can just reformat what is on C without messing with anything thats on the other partition, thats a smart way to do things, especially if your system only has one Harddrive, I have 2 harddrives now though ;D
try panda active scan 2 load via internet explorer follow all directions allow active x to load it will get rid of all viruses etc but it will take a while depending on h/d size ps go to google type in panda active scan 2
I'm going to format my Pentium 4 PC, but only the 40GB HDD. I will copy "My Documents" and some stuff on my external hard drive. Rest of the stuff is located in the other 20GB HDD. Both are IDE.
omg i have the same prob i got a scvhost.exe virus and i cant get rid of it i tried to get help from dell but they want 69$ to help me clean all files of my comp... i miss my games lol (flyff)..
I just installed vista on my friends computer for free, he had the same problem as you. DOn tget ripped off by dell, the least someone could do is help you get rid of the virusus.
Backup your documents (pictures, music, video) on an external hard drive or another partition. Likely, you'll need to reinstall your games and applications. Program applications end up placing files outside of their 'applications' folder. There's just no way around that.
It's a good opportunity to take stock of what you do or do not want.
ok i see. that sucks, sounds like a nasty virus. i've never had anything that bad and always gotten rid of any virus in a worst case scenario with a combination of antivirus and anti spyware/malware programs. in that case a format might be in order.
Reformat is similar to format. Format is removing all contents on a hard drive. Reformat is the same. Reformatting does not necessarily mean reinstalling windows.
format is to completely "delete" everythin on the HDD, even the tiniest things, handy to do if u have the OS CD and your tring to recover from a virus
My question is i took my desktop in and they said they would do a clean install. I did not have any disk with the computer and they did a clean install. If they used just any xp disk would'nt the ( product key ) for the disk be an issue. Like if they use there xp disk with there product key, would'nt that be a problem down the line when i hook up to the internet and there is two computers with the same product key on the internet ?
well i had a crazy virus that not only crashed my comp whenever i tried to scan with Mcafee, BUT it also played ADS and COMMERCIALS, from within the comp (when not online.....) AND, whenever i opened IE, it instantly crashed, AND when i plugged in the ethernet cord- INSTANT BLUE SCREEN...
yeah so i reformatted, and now its ok so DO IT..... just get updated antivirus software before u connect the external HD
i goota format soon its getting slow :P and its not letting me connect to windows live website for some reason i scaned for viruses and spyware and registry and i got nothing
Guys, not sure this is the right place to write this but i really need help, my pc died today, i have bought a new pc but i need to get to files on the old hardrive (photos of my newborn baby) Is it possible to install the hardrive from the old pc, inot my new pc and transfer the files over, id really appriciate someone messaging me about this
hi man, i was wondering if you could tell me if its ok to move all my operating sistem files and the important stuff that ive got in my C: drive to my D: drive and then eliminating them from C: without screwing up my laptop. I would really apreciate if you could respond me cuz Ive got 2.25 Gb left in C: thanks
how much gb is it to run xp because on my 40 gb harddrive
C drive: it says format if i click format would i wipe everything but will still have windows xp on it? and please i need a reply please please please.
if i press that button would my keyboard and everythign work? i ve got a e drive to my documents on is that okay..
on my 40 gb harddrive it says 37.2 gb total space does that mean that xp is 2.8 gbs to run?
Backup your data, then put in the Windows disk or whatever OS and then choose format NTFS if XP and thats it. Again make sure you backup your shit as everything will be gone (factory install).
Oh btw whats the difference between Recovery Disks and Windows CDs? Recently i burned the recovery disc CD and it is a set of 2 DVDs, thats alot of data! While i have a Windows XP Pro CD and its only 700mB-ish and fits on one CD.
At school every student has a P: drive and when ever we click My Documents it goes to that P: drive, but recently our whole network "crashed"? lol, so all the PCs were rolled back and now we have to do My Computer to access that drive, how would i make My Documents go default to P: drive when the Properties is disabled? Same with regedit and everything else. Bleh.
My bother reinstall my window XP, but I have a virus now but cant seem to get rid of it. When I go into Google and clink on a link it direct me to other site and I also get this spy ware trying to download something onto my computer. AVG, ADWARE and SpyZooka software dont seem detect the problem. I dont of there a free good anti spyware to down load on the net. Help!!
hey i was wondering im a bit of a newbie on formating my hard drive, i wanna format :C currently using vista home premium, and i also have the old cd i used to install it with. Can i use the same cd after i've formated to install Vista or do i have to buy a new one?
you can use the same cd =D i uses the same cd to install xp on this for the last 3 times. My dum sister is a clickadic so i had to install xp on her computer 3 times i also install vista on this one 2 times use the same cd so issues
idk about much tech stuff but do you know(u prob do) about xbox360 hard drives because when its in my 360 everything is slow like loading the dashboard and i cant save/load anything and i dont know if i need to buy a new one or anything else like that please answer back
just set your bios to boot from cd and load up your xp install disk and during the install it will give you the ability to format your c drive and install xp clean but check for xp drivers for your laptop first and have them on a usb key or a nother drive or cd ..first
You can change the MyDocuments location on XP also. Go to My Computer, go up 1 level so your at "Desktop" then right click "my documents" and the first tab is "target". Also, JKDefrag is freeware that defrags as a screensaver.
I like this guys screens it looks like you know alot about computers i built mine a year ago and its going alright but i still have problems but im gonna format my drive and reinstall all drivers and hardware and all that stuff so everything runs perfectly so i have no more problems
Hey, I'm still pretty lame at this, but i know how to format my hard drive. I got a new motherboard and CPU and I'm just wondering, does anyone know if it's possible to only format and re-install windows components, without completely wiping everything else on the drive? Any input would be appreciated, thanks :)
I would like to learn how to reformat my hard drive. I am running XP and have never done it before. Is there a tutorial, or video I can follow that will give me step by step instructions on how to do this?
I was gonna do that but when i popped in the vista disc it said i needed 512mb of ram
II only have 256 :( And also wouldnt be a good idea for me because my laptop has like a 6gb hdd, Guess I need to upgrade now!
When u do partition it and add an os on each partition, tap [F8] at startup like ur gonna choose safe mode, but just choose start windows normally, then when it asks which os to use, then choose it. Tell me how it goes and if I left something out
when i try to reformat my drive C it always say.WINDOWS CANNOT FORMAT THIS DRIVE. QUIT ANY DISK UTILITIES OR OTHER PROGRAMS THAT ARE USING THIS DRIVE, AND MAKE SURE THAT NO WINDOWS IS DISPLAYING THE CONTENTS OF THE DRIVE.what will i do to it?been trying for ages to reformat it coz my drive C has virus.i cant even double click on it to my computer and see whats inside of it.its not letting me.please please please!HELP ME!:(
Hey um... LockerGnome. You seem to know alot about formatting drives. I want to format all of my free space on my drive without interrupting any of my current files (Un-Deletd files). Basically, Permanently delete (format) all of my trash/recycled items on the disk. How do I do this? I have been in computer management and cant seem to find "free space" listed under "Disk 0". What shall I do?
My compuer has decide to fuck up on me, it lags on everything. I don't donwload anything so i dont know what it is. I get pop ups when pop up blocker is on. I dont know what to do. I was going to change ram but reformatting crossed my mind. But i dont know how to do it... how do you do it?
Before you format your HDD, I suggest you download an anti virus program such as'spyware doctor' since I had the same problem until I done a complete computer check up.
I seriously need to do this on an old family desktop we have. I've decided to start using it again, but its basically destroyed. I seriously need to reformat.
hey chris..you have been doing a great thing indeed..thank you so much for that..i have been benefited many times...thank you

There should be the license key on your desktop chassis -_-"

My laptop has the C drive, but also a D, for backup, and I think both have a really persistent virus that spreads from drive to drive.
So, I wonder if formating C will get rid of the virus, since D might spread it as soon as I install XP again.

or you could get antivirus software
kenanscott24 2 years ago
well i had a crazy virus that not only crashed my comp whenever i tried to scan with Mcafee, BUT it also played ADS and COMMERCIALS, from within the comp (when not online.....) AND, whenever i opened IE, it instantly crashed, AND when i plugged in the ethernet cord- INSTANT BLUE SCREEN...
yeah so i reformatted, and now its ok so DO IT..... just get updated antivirus software before u connect the external HD

While i have a Windows XP Pro CD and its only 700mB-ish and fits on one CD.
lbrtdy 3 years ago
the recovery cd that came with your computer include, besides the operating system, a lot of programs, device drivers, configurations...
caiocc12 3 years ago
i usually just leave the recovery disk in the cd tray as i have to reformat so much. instead of restarting i just reformat.

Bleh.

If anyone needs to know the difference between Fat32 and NTFS, here it is:
With Fat32, you can read AND write on the drive, but it is 32 GB Max, You cannot use Vista with it.
NTFS has unlimited space compatibility, however, you can only read the contents on it if you are in a different OS.

just set your bios to boot from cd and load up your xp install disk and during the install it will give you the ability to format your c drive and install xp clean but check for xp drivers for your laptop first and have them on a usb key or a nother drive or cd ..first

You can change the MyDocuments location on XP also. Go to My Computer, go up 1 level so your at "Desktop" then right click "my documents" and the first tab is "target". Also, JKDefrag is freeware that defrags as a screensaver.

Hey, I'm still pretty lame at this, but i know how to format my hard drive. I got a new motherboard and CPU and I'm just wondering, does anyone know if it's possible to only format and re-install windows components, without completely wiping everything else on the drive? Any input would be appreciated, thanks :)

is it possible that I install 'two' operating systems on separate HDD's in the same computer? (One vista, One XP) and chose which to boot?
mohaab 3 years ago
yes, u need to partition the hard drive though
yokonater 3 years ago
Thanks, that has been bugging me for some time now. I might have to do that!
Vista for gaming!
Xp for everything else!
mohaab 3 years ago
I was gonna do that but when i popped in the vista disc it said i needed 512mb of ram
II only have 256 :( And also wouldnt be a good idea for me because my laptop has like a 6gb hdd, Guess I need to upgrade now!
When u do partition it and add an os on each partition, tap [F8] at startup like ur gonna choose safe mode, but just choose start windows normally, then when it asks which os to use, then choose it. Tell me how it goes and if I left something out
yokonater 3 years ago
I forgot, you might not have to push f8 and stuff at startup, it might ask you automaticly
My laptop just crashed, now im attempting to mix vista into xp so its all 1 os so itll have vista theme and start menu, but still be xp!
yokonater 3 years ago
"6gb hdd" woah! thats like a USB. When I buy my 64 bit vista OS, I will tell you how it goes. thanks again
