I know right!? I watched this my Junior year in High school and ever since then it has had a special place in my heart. :) I remember coming home still thinking about it and sobbing (don't worry I won't give away the end) but it was so touching, so well done, and the acting was so inspirational. I'm happy to finally see that some one agrees!! Hope you have a good day! :)
Found it - the Anthony Sher / Nigel Hawthorne version - it is on video and it's an RKO Home Video which was issued by the Royal Shakespeare Company and is price $89 on Amazon.com
It's probably worth contacting the RSC to see if they put it on to DVD, and Amazon.co.uk would give a price on the vid for over here.
@IrelandsPatriot I will, about the only thing I can think of is to contact AS himself he but doesn't appear to have a website nor a direct "to him" facebook page, so it's a little bit difficult................ Thanks for the reply.
@timsan55: The version you remember is an Royal Shakespeare Company production. I believe it's from 1984, and is directed by Bill Alexander. I love it too -- Antony Sher is the creepiest Tartuffe ever! You might be able to track it via Amazon.co.uk
There was a production of "Tartuffe" on TV in the UK in the mid to late 80's Anthony Sher as Tartuffe, and Nigel Hawthorne as Orgon, it was fantastic, but I have never seen it since, I wonder if anyone else saw it or knows about it or where it could be found ?
:-/ ...not sure if he counts as a contemporary of Shakespeare; he was born 6 years after Shakespeare died. ...but it was certainly around the same time; although, someone who died 6 years before I was born had a much different experience than me, to be sure.
Merveilleux...L'histoire de grands ecrivains...
Merci.

Ahhh, say my own sentiments. tis the dissembling of the tartuffe and skill of its creator's pen that has me on the edge of my seat again!
