For anyone who was born in the USA, the imperial system is easy. You've been taught that since birth. Everyone else uses the metric system. Whatever system you got taught at school, it's always hard to learn another system.
Are people really spending time arguing the metric system vs. the "english" system on youtube. I was born and raised in the US and Canada, so I am familar with both systems. The metric system is easier, and the US should be on it, but to argue on which is better. It is what you were raised on. If you were raised on metric, that is easier for you. If you grew up in the US (or the UK somewhat), then the "English" system you understand better. It is a waist of time to argue on here about it
I'm from Australia, the metric is the only way to go. The only measures from the imperial system which aren't bad are miles and feet and inches for height, celsius is way better than fahrenheit, millimetres are way better than fractions of an inch, kilos are way better than pounds and metres are way better than yards.
I live in Europe and we still use horsepower in stead of kilowatt as we should do. I guess the people who grew up with a system have to die before the country changes
@ozzy61foster No, horsepower is currently being replaced. More and more people are using kilowatts. Of course, that's the story with vehicles. For everything other, kilowatts are a standard.
Um, maybe most of the people commenting are extremely old....but in school we use the Metric system. At least in the state of Michigan. We know how to use both systems.
@mcstaal Finally: The world realizes that Americans are actually taught the metric system and do use the metric system, but prefer our own way of measurement. How small minded to think that because we don't use OTHER countries' system that we are somehow medieval. Both are correct, it's just that the metric system makes it easier for the kids who can only multiply/divide by tens. LOL.
said they were freezing and we were like WTF? It must be sooooo confusing for Americans in chemistry class. We know water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees but for them it's way different. Imagine measuring height in feet and inches and measuring your weight in stones and pounds. I'd be so confused
Americans do use the metric system, but only for sciences. If someone's career is science based, then they typically use it everyday. It's just not practical for everday life. Most Americans also learn the Metric system in school. If you think you're confused, just think how confusing it is for us to understand metric after being so long on the Imperial form. I'll admit it though, the Metric system does make much more sense.
@geobiochem I'm English and we pretty much only use metric in graphics and tech and stuff, I use imperial for my height, my weight, cooking, distance... We had to use kilometers for D of E instead of miles and it was dead confusing, we got all our times mixed up. But we use Celsius, not Farenheit for temperature... okay, now I'm confused.
In Ireland (like the rest of the world bar the US) we use the metric system and I just cannot understand feet, stones, pounds, miles etc. They're just way too confusing.... A km is 1000m and a mile is like 1609.344m, I just don't understand how anyone could find that messed up imperial system easier to use. The other day I was watching a US documentary with my cousin and they were saying these people got trapped in a flood of like 34 degree water and we were like woah that's hot and then it sai
@geobiochem How can you not know feet and miles? It's still used in the UK. And people in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand usually give you their height in inches
@negvar I live in Australia, and I distinctly remember using metric to measure our height in school. Its easier for me to say that I'm 1.7m tall than 5'7"
@36Hitler63 Hahah, im just hoping i dont get extradited to the US and then locked away in some unknown post Guantanamo prison for my ranting about a measurement system.
The continued use of the imperial system by the US is just the most supreme form of arrogance. The whole world made the switch and paid lots of money to do so because the system was a much better one. Oh well the Chinese, who completely use metric grow stronger and more important than the US everyday. The US will continue to isolate itself with similar acts of self worship. PS the calorie unit you guys are always using is an obsolete metric unit not even a standard system unit, we use joules now
When my stepmother told her gruff father that she'd had a hysterectomy because she had a benign tumor the size of a grapefruit, he said, "You aren't supposed to be growing fruit down there!"
Wanda Sykes is awseome, but I just don't get this - what is complicatet about the metric system? It makes perfect sense, 10 mm is one cm, 10 cm is one dm, 10 dm is one meter. It's like math for toddlers ^^
When my doctor says 5 centimetres, I understand the amount - what I don't understand is why I need to spend 10 years in university like they did to understand all the bullshit about diseases and what-not they are telling me!!
Also, America is one of the only countries in th world that's NOT using the metric system, every other country is, and so does all the scientific communities.
@danielhrm5 No we have a total of 7 on this Earth; Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia (which is also a country) Anartica, North America and South America.
@Agent00Justice North and South America are more of political division. rather than geographical.
But yeah, it doesn't make much sense to divide Asia and Europe either. Asia and Europe are basically connected, the same way as North and South America. But it make no geographical sense to slap the Ural mountains as division line. Nor it makes any sense for 2 American continents.
@Moionfire no it is nooot. America is a continent, with North, Central and South, you live at the UNITED STATES of AMERICA. you are a north-american, I live in Brazil, so i'm a South American. And, is not good...hahahaha
@YouStoleMyTube I measure my height in feet and inches, just find it awkward to list it in meters or centimeters for some reason. The only thing I don't like about the metric system is weight measurement. Yeah it's easy to convert like the rest of it but I have never liked how I can't feel 1 gram, whereas an ounce I can... (I'm from Canada too btw) so yeah, hear what you're saying.
@YouStoleMyTube lol oh yes and my other pet peeve with the system is how we measure fuel efficiency... I wanna know how far I can go, not how much gas I will use per 100 kilometers :P Which is why I think it would be cool if Canada measured efficiency in "Kilometers per Metric Gallon" (4 liters). meh, just my random night rambling.
