You know having actually met the guy, I don't really think he deserves a tribute. When Carlson passed, that was a Gracie who deserved a tribute. Ryan was a bully and troublemaker, the guy had some serious issues.

Great I had the honor and priviledge of training under Gracies like Carlson (RIP), Rickson, and Rorian. And a lot further back than two years ago junior. I'm old enough to remember Renzo when he was over at Torrance. So what's your point?

Ryan had serious issues and everyone knew it and to pretend that they didn't exist disrespects the true legends in the family like the late Carlson Gracie. Carlson was a true pioneer and champion. Where's his tribute?

Another thing since you bring up family, where's your beef with Rorian when he said that Helio was the true founder of Jiu-Jitsu? Completely erasing the contributions of Carlos Gracie. Or the total deletion of Helio's brother George from the history of the art?

Did you have a problem with Rorian suing Carley over the name "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu"?

And how about the Gracies who talked bad about Carlson before he died? There were a lot of them as well. Where's your beef with them?

I have nothing but admiration and respect for Helio Gracie. If you read deeper into the history, you'll know that, although Carlos did create the art, it was Helio that modified it for a person of smaller statue to perform.

Again, I'm not trashing anyone nor am I making light of his death. I'm only pointing things that have happened in the past and pointing out issues from personal experience.

The Gracies are a great family but should someone have a tribute solely for the fact his last name is Gracie? Or should one really examine why the Gracie name is so famous and look at the true champions in that family who really stepped up and made that name famous?

For the right reasons too.

I don't believe Ryan has a tribute just because his last name is Gracie. He has a tribute because he was a very entertaining fighter that died tragically. He obviously had something wrong with him, but no one's perfect. It's sad the way he went out. So much potential, but his demons got the best of him. I'm not sure if you know anyone that has serious disorders such as bipolar or schizophrenia, but it's heartbreaking watching a loved one go through it. I heard Ryan was schizophrenic.
