Ire Works is a great album, one of the reasons I love it so much is because of the versatility on there. It's not all one thing, and as much as I love calculating infinity, it seems to lack versatility....miss machine is still my fave though. Either way... DEP are fooking amazing!
how do they? nine inch nails have never done grindcore or hardcore in anyway, and dont dabble in math rock at all. the point is, is that ire works is new and fresh, and no one can deal with that they want reporduced bullshit over and over
I've been listening to Dillinger since 2003 2003, I got into them through Under The Running Board and Calculating Infinity. I'm all for bands going out and trying new shit, i love progressive shit, but they raved this was going to be their "best and craziest record ever" and with songs like black bubblegum, i find it hard to agree its their craziest and most chaotic record ever, because its not. It pisses me off when kids who saw Unretrofied on MTV try to tell me what to think of this band.
i like to think of songs like "black bubblegum" and "unretrofied" as the craziest dillinger songs because they are not so crazy. it would be crazy to expect "calculating"-era dillinger to be able to write songs like that
i agree ive seen them through the first singer who i loved and dint like greg at first but he grew on me. after miss machine i was like neh, i'll stick to their old stuff. i dont like singing in my crazy music. mostly devin townsend is the one exception
Gil Sharone, IS A FUCKING INSANE DRUMMER, AND I'VE MET HIM AND HUNG OUT WITH HIM UNTIL 3am HE IS SO FUCKING COOL AND SUITS DILLINGER SO FUCKING MUCH :D SO GLAD CHRIS LEFT(fell out with Ben Weinman :D)
This Gil guy is definitely getting the job done on a technical level, but when it boils down to it, he's basically doing a shameless Chris Pennie impersonation. I guess I can't really blame him. What would YOU do if you were called in to fill Pennie's shoes?
I have to disagree with the "Pennie Impersonation"; if you could imagine what Chris WOULD have played on Ire Works, I don't think it would be anyting close to what Gil put down. Also, ANY drummer taking on the DEP gig would HAVE to sound like a "Pennie Imposter". Other than that, I think Gil put more funk, groove, and spice into the band; too bad I don't think he'll join the band permanetly.
I still think that Pennie deserves credit for the creation of a new style of percussion back there. Gil's drumming on Ire Works sounds vaguely similar to Pennies, but it is obvious that, without Pennie and the predecessor, there would probably be no Gil Sharone, and no Dillinger for that matter.
people say what makes coheed better is the fact that they have better song writing quality. listen to ire works, best songwriting dillinger has to date in my opinion. but if i had to chose, it would be musicianship over song writing anyday...dillinger!
I have to agree with mcenaney29, Dillinger pretty much created there own genre that other musicians wished they could play, extremely technical, jazz signature timing with some grind. Just one of there songs has the amount of effort, notes and time signature changes put into an average bands full album. Best band ever.
There is no way C&C are a better band than DEP. DEP are about 5 times the band C&C will ever be. The musicallity, technical approach, stlye and accuracy are WAY more advanced than anything C&C have made
Mmm... I disagree on the last bit. I enjoy both bands, but listen to DEP more because ... Well I don't know, I like that more. :)
I think that what they've managed to do IS actually to combine this massive amount of technicality, and just going fast and weird, with catchy songs that my ear enjoys. I like Dillinger both concerning technicality, style and sound.
LMAO you cant just say coheed is a better band without having ANYTHING else to say after that. better band in what sense? technicality? no, musicianship? no, dillinger mixes styles like craaaazy, coheed?-rock and roll. chris pennie DOES make coheed better, but theyre not a better band
I love how people NOT in the band say they shouldn't be doing what they're doing...hey guys quit growing and being diverse! i wonder if people ripped on da vinchi for not painting the mona lisa over and over and over...if you dont like change, growth, or diversty then i suggest listening to nickelback- that way you'll have no surprises!
that's true.. change can be good, even if old was very nice :D people should be open, and after listening to their new songs, you can make a decision whether you like Gil or not :)
lol your da vinci reference was excellent. you're absolutely right. bands grow up. they expand their horizons. if they stayed inside their comfort zone, i feel any band would get tired of the same repetitive stuff. dillinger fuckin rocks and their new stuff is different, but equally just as great.
Just got to say that you comment was one of the best I ever read. I couldn't agree more.
The thing about Dillinger isn't whos in it, it's about growing and experiment as a band.. They said it themselves. So I just hope that this last a bit longer than the previous line-up's because this material and line-up is a fucking beast comming to rape our ear-pussys up!
of course he can brother, new dillinger is way more complex than old. it may seem more difficult, but it isn't... Besides, do you think these guys would've even consider him if he couln't nail, calculating stuff?
lol... how is new stuff more complex? i can play some new stuff on drums...couldn't say that for old stuff though..old stuff is wayyyyyyy more technical.... (ie. " Clip The Appex....")
when they lost pennie, Gil e-mailed the band stating he could play ALL their previous stuff, they went to california to jam with him and sure enough, he matched the parts and they put him on drums. i would like to see him do 'van damsel' though, that songs sick on drums, drummin to two different time signatures
Ire works is not a bad album, but it´s the worst of all. If DEP lost fans with miss machine, with Ire works could be worse. I´ll always hear this band, but WTF songs like Black bubblegum should never exist in a band like DEP. The rest of the album is good and smoetimes too much strange. This album it could have been better
I like how you don´t see the whole picture. The album together is the craziest every, and as Mr. Sharone says : Packed with many dimensions.
I also think that it´s nice that they actually evolves and change, cuze if i wanted it too be harder, i could just listen to any other album. Now there is a new view of DEP:s world that i find very intresting to look at.
I got to hear the whole Ire Works album and it's not one of their BETTER ALBUMS. I'm a DEP fan but disappointed, Ben stated on a radio interview that this album is gonna be twice as hard and crazier? Yeah Right, more twice as soft and softer! I'll wait until I find it USED for $4 somewhere which will happen. The songs are NOW easier to hear and play PLUS they sound they SAME. You don't like my opinion, I don't give a damn.
this new drummer seems to deliver, but the new song didnt impress me much, felt like it lacked the " nervous " or sudden moves of DEP, maybe it was just the bad quality of sound taking over
No, you're TOTALLY right they drummer good, but NOT for DEP! I got to hear the WHOLE album and ALL the songs sound the SAME on the album PLUS they have TOO MANY electronic interludes in it and not enough guitar scales/riffs. Not one of their BETTER albums. Gonna wait til' I find it USED for $4 somewhere which will happen.
by sound quality i was referring to the qulity in myspace, from what i've heard of this new album, there are some killer tracks and some very poor, like being sick on sundae or waht ever thats called like.
The only bad thing about Ire Works is that alot of the songs are really short. But you wouldn't want it to sound the same as the previous albums, would you? i think that it'd be less appealing if the songs followed the same format as before. I still think that the entire album is fucking nuts, theres so many different aspects to it. It doesn't have to be heavy all the time to be good. Overall, I think it's a really good CD, but thats my opinion as well.
I totally get you, but i got the album and it sounds awesome, no craapy quality of sound at all!! Yeah new drummer is awesome, what i dont get is why chris penny left for Co&Ca...i suppose every awesome drummer to their own.
i'm so mad that chris pennie left DEP. it seems like he really held them together and was just an all around sick fucking drummer. oh well i just hope the new guy can keep up.
I'm somewhat skeptical. But still looking forward to it. It's tought when such an integral band looses two of it's key members.....Chris Pennie and Benoit.
i like dep cause they made songs like highway robbery panasonic youth and so on ...i think miss machine is the best album hope the next one top it...PS: some of the old songs are just so bad man lol
The rumour is that Pennie is drumming for Coheed and Cambria now, which is awesome but it's a real shame to see him leave DEP. One of my favourite gig memories is of Pennis breaking his snare drum after one song!
Pennie is the reason I fell in love with this band, the only reason I really bothered trying to understand the music or anything. There is a special place for him in my heart. Gil has some good chops too, but I am still gonna miss Pennie. He seemed like such a funny nice guy lol, almost always smiling.
I'm going to be excited for the album just because it is dillinger... For one they still have Ben Weinman who's one of the most insane guitarist in rock today... And come on it's dillinger they're whole point of even existing is to play some of the most complex music around so I'm fuckin pumped
I really think this album is going to be great although there are a different drummer and only one guitar. I say: Sharone is amazing!. But why did Chris leave the band?
Does everybody remember having to listen to a "Chris Pennie" drum beat about 10 times before your brain comprehended what he was playing? That's what i think DEP's gonna lack now. This SUCKS!!!!
Dillinger Fucking Rules! And I'm already thoroughly impressed by Gil. Love the Hat. And btw, just because it's not melodic doesn't mean its not revolutionary. Stravinsky did basically the same thing with orchestral music in 1913 and people still can't handle it. Open your minds to dissonance people!
It is pretty funny when something like this causes this much fuss.DEP found a suitable replacement in Gil. hes pretty fucking awesome. and so what if Chris left for C&C (which personally i do find pretty wank... but you dont see me hunting down there vids and slating them hard). this stuff happens. fair play for DEP to go on and make a new album. and again for people here to slate DEP. NO ONE bar you gives a shit. Appreciate the musicianship even if its not to your taste!
damn man, sharone sounds freakin awesome!! admittedly, its sad to see pennie go, but coheed's still a pretty sweet band so at least his talent won't be wasted. Sharone's beats sound wicked, so i reckon DEP still has it comin with this new album
btw dream theater, opeth, (I know i'll be getting a lot of hate comments for this but whatever)coheed and cambria, Between the buried and me, yes, rush, king crimson, the mars volta, porcupine tree, megadeth, kansas, maiden, old genesis, camel, deep purple, angra and mostly every prog band rules! :)
DEP is a great band, I really ain't a fan as I'm just getting to know them (and personally I don't like all the screaming!), but they're great, they do have a lot of technique which is great.
I guess it's just stupid criticising bands, if you just don't like them (except rap and hip hop!), especially this one, 'cause maybe it's not ur music taste, but you can't say they ain't good musicians.
it seems like there wasnt much time between when the band first hinted that pennie was gone and when they announced that gil had finished recording drums. also there was a long period of time where dillinger posted updates of the writing process while chris was still in the band. this leads me to believe that alot of the drums on the record may have been written by chris. i'm not saying gil hasnt put his own voice into it, just seems like most of the songs were written before he joined.
Honestly, I feel Gil will bring a better approach to the album.
I prefer his playing style and some of the shit he comes up with, Chris pennie did alot of the same( grabbing the guitar riffs with the snare and not alot of difference.
Already in this clip, when Gil mentions ryhmic pattersn that drum beat is fucking interesting on it's own.
And the drummer. I don't think he ruins it - the aproach is a bit different but the licks still stay. Hes a bit looser (technically, not in timing) than Pennie was. It's different, but I'm OK with that.
that's fucking priceless! =D andyyhitscar, YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS?! o my FUCKING GOD'S MOTHER MARY! ..and what comes to robitussin217's comment, what's wrong with him expressing is opinion - and about that music theory tid-bit, it holds true for DEP. You should take that dick out of your mouth so what you say would make some sense.
If it's just about who plays, then check coheed. If it's music then get over it! =) I feel for you though, Chris really is something and really made this band something.
Read and learn Throne1607, if you'd be half as smart and musical as robitussin217 here I wouldn't have slated you, dumbfuck! See this is a guy here who knows HOW to express an opinion.. Thanks, dude, that's the kind of critisism any place needs! =)

yeah Pennie drums for Coheed now..
karlness91 4 years ago
i like dep cause they made songs like highway robbery panasonic youth and so on ...i think miss machine is the best album hope the next one top it...PS: some of the old songs are just so bad man lol
ehykey 4 years ago
Haha, the rumor?
Chris has officially been playing with Coheed for like two months now.
Chapter93 4 years ago
The rumour is that Pennie is drumming for Coheed and Cambria now, which is awesome but it's a real shame to see him leave DEP. One of my favourite gig memories is of Pennis breaking his snare drum after one song!
MrPatton 4 years ago
Pennie is the reason I fell in love with this band, the only reason I really bothered trying to understand the music or anything. There is a special place for him in my heart. Gil has some good chops too, but I am still gonna miss Pennie. He seemed like such a funny nice guy lol, almost always smiling.
KuzzEyeSedSoe 4 years ago
Can't wait, but i did not know pennie was not going to be on it. Keep an eye on pennie, he must be working on something too.

Fucking fuck shit balls. It's about time. I love dillinger
ssssaint 4 years ago
I'm going to be excited for the album just because it is dillinger... For one they still have Ben Weinman who's one of the most insane guitarist in rock today... And come on it's dillinger they're whole point of even existing is to play some of the most complex music around so I'm fuckin pumped

DEP sucks but gil sharone is the booomb
Dasemannen 4 years ago
I really think this album is going to be great although there are a different drummer and only one guitar. I say: Sharone is amazing!. But why did Chris leave the band?
danieldrumss 4 years ago
he joined coheed and cambria.. dead serious
squintzzz 4 years ago
whadafuck why did chris leave thats wack yo...i bet the album will be good but not the same
tghooker 4 years ago
Does everybody remember having to listen to a "Chris Pennie" drum beat about 10 times before your brain comprehended what he was playing? That's what i think DEP's gonna lack now. This SUCKS!!!!

i jiz every time i watch one of these webisodes lol, i proper cant wait for the new album.

Gil seems very talented.

Dillinger Fucking Rules! And I'm already thoroughly impressed by Gil. Love the Hat. And btw, just because it's not melodic doesn't mean its not revolutionary. Stravinsky did basically the same thing with orchestral music in 1913 and people still can't handle it. Open your minds to dissonance people!

gil sharone has chops and is good but he overplays
andyyhitscar 4 years ago
It is pretty funny when something like this causes this much fuss.DEP found a suitable replacement in Gil. hes pretty fucking awesome. and so what if Chris left for C&C (which personally i do find pretty wank... but you dont see me hunting down there vids and slating them hard). this stuff happens. fair play for DEP to go on and make a new album. and again for people here to slate DEP. NO ONE bar you gives a shit. Appreciate the musicianship even if its not to your taste!
ablueafternoon 4 years ago
i think they already recorded some music with chris so, and have him layed down in some tracks. So in the end everyone gets the best of both worlds

i find sharone sounds a little more simple than pennie. but whatehell... we'll see
casperado666 4 years ago
you are fucking retarded if you think this music sucks
jaasum 4 years ago
I dont argee to that =)
AndrewBravener 4 years ago
damn man, sharone sounds freakin awesome!! admittedly, its sad to see pennie go, but coheed's still a pretty sweet band so at least his talent won't be wasted. Sharone's beats sound wicked, so i reckon DEP still has it comin with this new album
protestx 4 years ago
He reminds me of the drummer from HELLA. I think this drummer will add to the band in a positive way for sure.
soilworkforever 4 years ago
btw dream theater, opeth, (I know i'll be getting a lot of hate comments for this but whatever)coheed and cambria, Between the buried and me, yes, rush, king crimson, the mars volta, porcupine tree, megadeth, kansas, maiden, old genesis, camel, deep purple, angra and mostly every prog band rules! :)
HighendDT 4 years ago
DEP is a great band, I really ain't a fan as I'm just getting to know them (and personally I don't like all the screaming!), but they're great, they do have a lot of technique which is great.
I guess it's just stupid criticising bands, if you just don't like them (except rap and hip hop!), especially this one, 'cause maybe it's not ur music taste, but you can't say they ain't good musicians.
HighendDT 4 years ago
Gil sounds like he's an amazing musician! Can't wait for the new album.
tylerxxx69 4 years ago
it seems like there wasnt much time between when the band first hinted that pennie was gone and when they announced that gil had finished recording drums. also there was a long period of time where dillinger posted updates of the writing process while chris was still in the band. this leads me to believe that alot of the drums on the record may have been written by chris. i'm not saying gil hasnt put his own voice into it, just seems like most of the songs were written before he joined.
birdman88945 4 years ago
Honestly, I feel Gil will bring a better approach to the album.
I prefer his playing style and some of the shit he comes up with, Chris pennie did alot of the same( grabbing the guitar riffs with the snare and not alot of difference.
Already in this clip, when Gil mentions ryhmic pattersn that drum beat is fucking interesting on it's own.
JoshElgood 4 years ago
And the drummer. I don't think he ruins it - the aproach is a bit different but the licks still stay. Hes a bit looser (technically, not in timing) than Pennie was. It's different, but I'm OK with that.
Raasto 4 years ago
ummm yes he does ruin it. just look at 1:29. do you see how he lifts his arm and pushes his glasses up.
andyyhitscar 4 years ago
that's fucking priceless!
Raasto 4 years ago
I know my bod homie. im just having some separation anxiety from chris i just miss him. CAN YOU BLAME ME
andyyhitscar 4 years ago
If it's just about who plays, then check coheed. If it's music then get over it! =) I feel for you though, Chris really is something and really made this band something.
Raasto 4 years ago
Read and learn Throne1607, if you'd be half as smart and musical as robitussin217 here I wouldn't have slated you, dumbfuck! See this is a guy here who knows HOW to express an opinion.. Thanks, dude, that's the kind of critisism any place needs! =)
