  • what you have there is a device once used by an idiot.

  • I spoke to a guy yesterday telling me he uses 160 grains of smokeless pistol powder in his .50 Hawkins rifle.... I could not get out of that discussion fast enough.

  • hows the shooter doing?

  • lol did he ever use Smokeless Powder again......

  • This is probably a test barrel, if they have many of these, then they are testing them to see what actually happens when someone loads smokeless into them and adjusting the steel so that the barrel splits and peels rather than shattering.

  • that barrel did not split on any rifle stock.if it had when that part of the barrel that wrapped the bottom of the barrel would have caught wood in it. not been so tight against the barrel. it looks to be a barrel that was split on purpose.

  • What happened to the shooter?

  • That ruined someone's day.

  • @Me102288 gauss rifles suck you are stupid for bringing them up to raise your credibility. also they don't use any kind of explosive propellant so it's not above this intellectually it's just sideways, knowledge isn't intelligence in such a broad world

  • Good Lord! Whoever did that had a horrible day

  • "Hi, I'm Larry Potterfield with Midway USA, let me show you how."

  • OK I Solved the whole damn problem... REPLACE THE with a 4 guage barrel.

ps, anyone know where I can buy a Blunderbus ? big old black powder gun with the horn like barrel.. they were fun with nails 'n shit you could stuff down the barrel

  • come to think of it, thats an awefull pathetic gun , you might as well throw the led at your enemy.if it going to explode in your face..

Thats a gun I'd gladly give me enemy lol

  • @Me102288 its not ment for smokeless only blackpowder and blackpowder sub's and this is why it blows up

  • @camerl2009 ya, ppl are to stupid to buy a proper one and you black powder...

I dont see why you can even buy one that cant fire gunpowder..its just asking for it...

they should just ditch them for barrels that can take either..then a noob cant make the mistake in the first place.. agree?

  • @Me102288 what i could not understand a word of this

a muzzleloader is ment for blackpowder only not smokeless the muzzleloader was made in a time where only powder was blackpowder even some cartridge guns can only use blackpowder blackpowder was the first "gunpowder" to use a muzzleloader you should be able to read the warnings that says only use blackpowder if you cant then dont touch one plain and simple use smokeless powder in a muzzleloader and your going to hurt your self big time

  • Larry Potterfield concurs

  • @ironlionkalo harry pothead is wasted, ironlak smashes steel

  • proof that smokeless powder is the cocaine of the firearms world. just dont do it.

  • "Experience keeps a dear school, but fools learn no other way."

  • Santa???

  • That's what you get for using smokeless powder....and jamming your finger in the muzzle

  • @xXUSMCGRIFFXx Mythbusters tested that finger in the barrel myth..

on a shotgun, they made a metal finger and tac welded it after the hammered it into the barrel..

I thought it would Banana, small dent above the end and the metall figure shot out while the slug was jammed in the end of the barrel.. weird stuff..

I think these muzzle loaders are pretty weak, or pehaps even defective...

hardware store, pipe to fit a shotgun shell is $15... it doesnt banana :-\

  • @Me102288 Yeah I know, I've seen that episode. I just felt like making a Bugs Bunnie and Elmer Fudd reference lol :D

  • Big Boom

  • be smart people if you want to use smokeless USE WAYYY LESS shit just test it out start out with small amounts then add until you find the right amount you can always add more but if you automatically use to much well you see what happened dont let it happen to you

  • @xXxchipperchopperxXx sounds like bad advice.

  • @panoptes1 if you think about it not really if you dont use enough the projectile will not exit then you can just plunge it out not that hard use to much nd congrats you just made a grenade

  • @xXxchipperchopperxXx I dont claim to have experience in this situation but using exposive and fuel isn't a simple issue of quantity.

  • so what you really mean to say is use the aplicable LESS smokeless powder..

    you'd figure it obvious why..

Hell just use cordite, that stuff burns as slow as black powder :-\

  • @Me102288, While smokeless powders burn rate are pressure dependent, BP typically has a FASTER burn rate then most smokeless powders. It is the pressure curve, not the burn rate (though they are directly connected in smokeless powder) that blows up BP guns.

  • @andytheturtle87 cordite is a slow accelerant, ver very much like BLACK POWDER. it just burns for a longer period of time...

there is no difference in pressure.. pressure dependant? lol no.. gasoline is presure dependent.... if you do not compress gasoline it will not explode.. same with gun powder, black powder...and any other "flammable" powder..

the rate which the build pressure inside a closed barrel is dicatated by how much you put in.

  • @Me102288 cordite is way different them BP and not even made anymore

  • @Me102288 BP is not an accelerate, it is an (low) explosive. If you can't understand simple facts like that I really have no reason to waste my time educating you.

  • @andytheturtle87 then why say what you said

  • Comment removed

  • @MUNCHIES46, He claimed cordite is similar to BP, it is not, regardless if BP is an accelerate or an explosive, cordite is quite different from BP from the burn rate and pressure standpoint.

  • @andytheturtle87 LOL oh boy you missed the point black powder is a slow burning powder the build pressure gradually... why the long barrel on a black powder gun... you figure... you with me.. I'm into balistics not just dinky little firearms.

RDX or Tricyclonite is a high explosive to me.. BP is right next to "You might as well use gasoline"

This summer I will be testing Hydrogen, since I can get it from water. it it a very gentle high explosive.

  • @Me102288 BP is not a "slow" burning powder and does not build pressure gradually, sit down and look at some pressure graphs for BP and any smokeless powder, BP SPIKES quickly to a low pressure and they drops, smokeless powder is a much more gradual pressure build up compared to BP. The reason for long barrels is simple, most ML rifles are military copies, a long barrel let the soldier shoot when stacked 3 deep and more effectively use a bayonet. Makers today keep the tradition alive.

  • @andytheturtle87 LOL ok there ... its not slow, its just 15 times SLOWER THEN GASOLINE..

given hydrogen from WATER burns 9x FASTER then gasoline.. its SLOW as hell.

  • @andytheturtle87 ps gasoline is a low explosive to, but it doersnt explode unless it compressed..

its actually just flammable.. thats why it sucks for fuel... Hydrogen is flammable too.. it burns 9x faster though.

educating me? lol fuckoff..I deal with gauss rifle, this is so below my education field

  • It's like elma fwud mayn...

  • Another note: blackpowder is an explosive, smokeless powder is a propellant. Smokeless generates MUCH higher pressures, NEVER use it in a muzzleloader! The only exceptions are those higher end muzzleloaders that specifically call for smokeless, such as the Savage model. All others that do cost many thousands of dollars.

  • @BRTowe actually there all just very flammable.. TNT, Plastic explosives and what not are explosives...

you know how that works... the gas expands to push the led out the end of the barrel.

this is simple physics, and its exactly why you put X number of grains of powder in to expand to x # of cubic inch's volume of you barrel..

the only thing you guys are pointing out is you need much less of a more explosive powder to obtain the same damn thing.

  • Jas430100: even posting that comment is setting yourself up for a huge liability. Unless you have a pressure testing barrel then you have no way of knowing what kind of pressure you are creating. Also, "smokeless" powder is a general term, not all are the same. Throw in the variabilities of different bullet weights and you just gave someone enough knowledge to blow up their gun and kill themselves or a bystander. Hopefully they read my post before they proceed to do so.

  • @BRTowe no, thats where you'de expext the person to read up on balistics and how thick the barrel has to be.. etc..

well hmm, I just described a gunsmith didnt I ? LOL

  • I have been useing smokless powder in my TC for 10 years as well as 6 other people that I hunt with. A lot of the time when this happens its due to people not knowing what they are doing. We shoot 52 grains of smokeless but if we were to up it to say 60 grains then this could happen. If you put a dime size pile of black powder in an ashtray and light it, you get a much bigger bang than you do with smokeless. Know what your doing and stay safe.

  • @jas430100 only 52 grains?

  • @jas430100 NO, black powder ignites with a fixed rate of combustion, while smokeless powder burns faster under compression, as in a cartridge case. 40 grains of black powder will propel a .45 round ball out to about 1200 fps. But only 25 grains of smokeless powder confined in a .223 Remington cartridge case will propel a 43-grain V-Max out to more than 3400 fps. When compressed to certain limits, smokeless powder CAN and WILL detonate like a plastic explosive.

  • @jas430100 yeah that's really a bad idea, I was just wondering about Trail-boss and got my answer, No not even trail boss, which I wouldn't of tried anyway. Its just too much of a pressure spike with smokeless, and even if you get the measurements/grains correct, one pinch too much and boom, since smokeless is not as forgiving as black-powder, thats why black-powder can be measured by volume and smokeless has to be accurately weighed.

  • and they call rednecks dumb

  • on one episode of mythbusters they tried so hard to get that banana peel effect and could not do it. There is a perfect example, with one exception, it peeled from the breech-end. Wow, I knew there was a reason why I use "Geox" FFFg in my .50cal muzzle-loader and not smokeless. Seriously though, I really feel that anybody looking to get into black powder shooting better get the "lyman's Black Powder handbook and loading manual" Before even attempting to load & shoot a muzzle-loader.

  • @Nwest82 A bore obstruction such as a stuck bullet or congealed lubricant in ANY firearm will cause the barrel to "banana peel". I work on guns and I have seen an AR 5.56 barrel peel due to the fact that the shooter allowed wet dirt to go into the muzzle while wading. When the rifle was fired, pressure built up in the barrel catastrophically and the hot gas had to escape, so it did through the weakest part of the barrel.

  • @Rachen30 they tried mud in the muzzle of the barrel and yes the barrel exploded but there was no banana peel effect, They should of tried it with an Octagon bbl.

  • I'm not willing to try it in my muzzle-loader as I don't want to ruin it, but there is one brand of smokeless powder by IMR called "Trail-Boss" . It seems that it behaves much like black powder but with a little more "spike". I wonder if it is possible to tailor specific loads using "Trail-Boss" and have it function without blowing up the gun. Like lest say if it calls for 100 grains of FFFg scale it down to 60 grains of Trail-Boss. Again I'm not willing to try it.

  • @Nwest82 "Trail Boss" is ONLY, and I mean ONLY, meant for BLACK POWDER CARTRIDGES. They are NOT to be used in a traditional muzzleloader. Trail Boss duplicates the ballistics of black powder when used in old straight-wall cartridges like the .45-70, .45 Colt, and the .38 Special. Trail Boss is NITRO based powder, and WILL spike in pressure. That is why the powder is manufactured very large disc pellets. So it will fill up a case and the reloader does not load a double-charge by accident.

  • @Rachen30 yeah I knew that, which is why I said that I wasn't willing to try it. But I was thinking that since it acted so much like black powder in cartridges, (IE: You fill the cartridge to the brim with TB and insert the bullet its a perfect load in most black-powder cartridges). than it "maybe", if done correctly, could work. Personally I like the Big BOOM and all the smoke that Geox Black-Powder black powder gives, and will stick with that powder for my front-loader

  • @Rachen30 but like you said the "pressure Spike" is still way greater than Black Powder

  • I trust noone got hurt?

  • Yikes!

  • reminds me of a gun I saw when I was like 13 in hunters safety. scary stuff.

  • I once bought an original 18th century smoothbore barrel, 0.60 calibre and more than twice as thick at the breech and hat it test proofed ( legal requirement for shooting firearms on shooting ranges inour country). I watched through the splinter-proof window of the testing room when it was fired. As if it was slow-motion I saw the barrel twist like a snake when it ripped open and the breechplug came out and two pieces flew away amidst a cloud of fire and smoke.

  • @Jeansschwimmer We examined the piece and found a liong stretch of blackened, corroded iron where it had burst. The welding must have faulty from the beginning and the double portion of modern blackpowder was then just too much for that old tube.

So, even blackpowder in a bad barrrel shows to you it is an explosive.

  • Holy shit!

  • Great Advice....Just remember no matter how hard you try you cant make anything idiot proof....idiots are so ingenious....Semper Fi...Keep on shooting and making videos...and I still love my fat heavy cheap Hi Points...But I love my M&P15 more LOL

  • Excellent education piece to share.

  • Why am I laughing? That guy might of lost a finger or 4 or his whole hand.

  • dont wanna put that in my pipe and smoke it!

  • four people used smokeless powder... =D

  • Why does this happen?

  • @Eddythebandkid because muzzleloaders are not ment for smokeless only blackpowder or subs

  • @camerl2009 correction, OLD muzzle loaders... Newer ones are as pathetic nowadays

  • @Me102288 ? never is any muzzleloader use smokeless even in the savage as smokeless needs air space witch in turn will cause a bore obstruction

  • @Eddythebandkid to much pressure

  • @TheAlexagius the barrel must be aluminium, none of my barrel go,

I think this is more of a dont use high quality gun powder in a piece of garbage that gas an aluminium barrel :-\

  • @Eddythebandkid Smokless powder burns much slower than black powder. What probably happened is the ball got stuck halfway down the barrel due to a lack of force, and as the powder continued to burn behind it the pressure got too high for the seams.

  • u guys should show this to mythbusters thay done a myth alot like this

  • Guess it wasnt wabbit season.

  • I avoided the entire issue by buying a Savage MLII. It can fire either black powder, pyrodex or a variety of smokeless powders. I shoot mine with only smokeless powders. Nice and clean and I can hunt in primitive weapon seasons. But never ever use smokelss in any other muzzle loader. Savage is the only muzzle loader on the planet that actually proof tests every barrel made to 3x a normal load! Research it for yourself.

  • Problem #1 : shooting a CVA.

  • From what I hear, smokeless powder is much more powerful than black powder.

    Apparently this is very true.

  • @ForlanceAbice not so true, the modern powder just burn quicker. and black powder riffle are suppose to have slow powder in them...

  • @hitachi088 tehy burn quicker...that means higher pressures, teh bullet cant get pushed a littel forward before all the powder is gone. this blows the barrel up.

  • @kainhall i know, its exactly what i said.

  • imagine the respose you would get when you sent that in for warenty work haha

  • I thought smokeless powder was less powerful than blackpowder

  • @iamadness69 really? we use smokeless powder in our modern guns... its for reloads (i think) i think we use it for .50

  • @pcblah we use it in every modern cartidges because it doesnt dirt up the gun like black powder would

  • @iamadness69 ... not the only reason

  • how can those americans won the war?, without russia they didnt.

  • id keep it tell people its a new kind of art. see what people say bought that

  • It looks like it is straight from a bugs bunny cartoon

  • @immrlizard i bet there face doesnt..

  • i thought some company recently made a smokeless power mussel loader but they discontinued them

  • @ModernFun94 Savage made that rifle, the ML10. By the accounts of anyone with credibility, the finest muzzleloader ever built, bar none. You might see stories that would claim otherwise, but they've all been traced back to a disgruntled former Savage employee who started a smear campaign.

  • Looks like someone packed a 1/4 stick of T.N.T. as a charge.

  • how much work would it take to make a muzzle loader capable of using smokeless powder? Just a new barrel or a complete overhaul of the gun excepting the frame?

  • @krlcspr You will need a donor gun such as a a Rem 700 or equivalent, a barrel threaded for a breach plug, a breach plug and priming system. Head on over to Doug's Message Board and check out everything there. It was started by people with Savage 10 ML smokeless muzzleloaders and has evolved into much more. All the info you will need to convert a gun to smokeless muzzleloader.

  • We got Coyotes! Lets go Scurry Outdoor South!!!!

  • So...only use 1/2 smokeless and the other 1/2 black powder?

  • @NatePlaysMM Never, ever use powder that your rifle is not designed for your rifle. Do not exceed the max either. Exceeding the rifles recommended load can blow your barrel no matter what the powder can says. Even black powder. This can happen. There are now a couple of muzzleloaders capable of using smokeless, but they are designed for that. Your owners manual or the manufacturer will identify that. In fact, they use it as a selling feature. Me . . . I like the smoke!

  • I agree that you should never use smokeless propellant in a muzzleloader designed for black powder or BP substitutes. There are however, muzzleloaders designed from the ground up for smokeless powder use. I own the Savage ML1, a first and second gen ML-II. These were designed by a fellow named Henry Ball for Savage. He's been building custom MLs for smokeless use for 20 something years. Others include Bad Bull, Swinglock, SMI, Precision Rifle Inc, McWhorters are those that come to mind.

  • Isn't it a matter of just lowering the amount of smokeless powder to reduce the chamber pressure? Not the type of powder?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, I haven't shot muzzle loaders before yet.

  • @juki009 I'm certainly not an expert on this... but I think it is the faster burn rate of smokeless powder that causes the barrel to burst. The shock from the quick burn may cause older muzzle loader barrels to burst, even with lighter loads. probably best to just stick to smoky powder.

  • That is wild did the individual survive???

  • I like Barry. You and him compliment each other well.

  • awesome

  • Barry is awesome, nuff said.

  • i used smokeless powder in my muzzle loader once, ONCE

  • Unless it's a Savage 10ML or 10ML-II. They are specifically made for it and each and every one is actually pressure proofed before leaving the factory. And can easily handle 129,000 PSI. No other company even proofs their ML barrels, none. CVA gets their crap made by the lowest overseas bidder and should not even be trusted with BP or Pyrodex. TC barrels aren't much better.

  • Yikes!!!

  • holy shit did the shooter lose his face?

  • Thanks for the tip guys I wonder if that person ever got hert? And I wonder if that person ever new berter or not.

  • And to think black powder is explosive and smokeless powder is not....

  • Never underestimate the power of idiots in large groups.

  • HOLY SH1+!!! 0_0 bet u wont see that guy at the range for a week or two. he probably narrowly escaped a heart attack after seeing his rifle explode at the end of his nose!

  • Wow!

  • Never seen such an entangled mess.

  • I don't think it was smokeless powder. I think Bugs Bunny put his finger into the muzzle when Elmer pulled the trigger. I've seen it before. ;-)

  • Wow, I knew smokeless powder would be a capital-B Bad Idea in a muzzle loader, but that wreckage is truly impressive.

Thanks for all your awesome videos! Keep up the awesome work.

  • Damn if that doesnt kill someone, it could take their face off!!! Nasty!!!

  • Yeah, but an explanation why for paranoid people like me that know about the _ew world order would be nice in the video description. What's the differences?

  • I use smokeless powder in my muzzleloader all the time...when I want to turn my barrel into spaghetti!!

  • Thanks for the valuable info.

  • oh boy...

  • Wow. Amazing. Wonder what happened to the shooter. I suspect natural selection was at work.

  • Forewarned is forearmed. You'd think people would know this stuff by now!

  • mercy. i can only imagine what that sounded and looked like when it happened. that could have killed someone.

  • GOOD LORD!!!!! I hope they were wearin saftey glasses!!!!

  • we just need to be reminded to think BEFORE we act,i have friends that do stuff like this just to see the results, could be a life changing event for some 1 ,thanks for the videos keep up the great work!!

  • wow some people are stupid.

  • Wow!

  • What exactly happend to cause this catasrophic failure? too much powder load? didnt use bore butter? or just the chemical formula of the smokeless powder?

  • @KAPichon The pressure curve of smokeless powder is faster than black powder. The barrels on black powder guns can't withstand such pressures because of the way they are made and because most guns were made before smokeless powder was invented or widely used.

  • @metalhead2508 Ahh ok, Im glad i learned this before trying that stuff in my gun, thanks! =)

  • Id have to agree with the 911feltner guy to an extent, Barry does kinda seem like an ass sometimes but when you have THAT many years experience in something youve earned the right to be an ass, an that goes without saying. By unsubbing this channel the guy is only shorting himself so fuck em its his loss... I love the channel, the humor, and even Barry's sometimes prick attitude so hell with the nay sayers keep up the good work guys!

  • How can anyone dislike Barry?

  • @Harris91 I am saying right?

  • Barry rocks. I don't hardly know anything about muzzle loaders but I'd definitely research before buying/shooting one. That's f'ing nuts how much pressure it took to do that.

  • that is some crazy shit!!!! Never got into the muzzle loaders, but I will remember this if I ever do.

  • What happened to the shooter. . . . .

  • Whoa! Looks like someone had a bout with bugs bunny

  • I was wondering about this the other day, guess that question is answered...Hope that shooter was okay...

  • Was the shooter hurt?

  • Wow I know jack squat about muzzleloaders but I sure as hell know not to put smokeless in them. This is what happens when people buy guns cause they look cool in the movies and don't do an once of research to learn what they've gotten themselves into. Good post, and hopefully this guy still has a head on his shoulders to absorb the lesson he has be taught.

  • Can you say "catastrophic failure"?

  • @thegangvault2 More like apocalyptic failure.

  • Smokeless powder is more powerfull and overall faster than black powder. It's a matter of preassure... Easy way to make a pipe bomb. lol I know a guy that uses HS6 in his, BUT you can't shove 150grs of the stuff in there... He casts and cuts down his own bullets, it's a preassure thing he plays with. He's hunted for years like that, but you'll never catch me with that in a muzzleloader. I like haveing two eyes and ten digits....

  • ok I understand, could go over the minute details as to why? isnt the steel in mu M77 thinner than that think ole .50?

  • Lmao elmer fudd Hahahahaha

  • @911feltner911 Do what you want, but if you have watching my videos for any period of time, you know people other than myself post content on my youtube page as well. Chad puts stuff up, Ray will, and more recently, Barry has put some stuff up. I put up a lot of stuff on this youtube channel....There is something for everybody. I work hard to put videos up here and I don't do it for own health either.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 sounds good bro. like i said i miss your stuff. hey it is what it is.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 Barry is awesome and is probably one of the funniest guys on youtube. Don't listen to this tard. Besides, I don't know how telling people not to use smokeless powder in a muzzle loader is stuck up, its good advice lol.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 don't worry about the haters bro, you're doing an awesome job.. oh and are you thinking about putting another steak video up? lol

  • @Iraqveteran8888 I'd prefere to talk to barry than some other gunsmiths, just cuz he seems more personable.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 agreed, i don't understand why people feel the need to announce their unsubbing either. If you don't like the content that features Barry, don't watch it! I think Barry is awesome btw. He tells it like it is and doesn't sugar coat anything. Need more people like Barry in this world!

  • @911feltner911

If you think Barry is stuck up, I'd hate to meet you... Barry is awesome!

  • @token5gtd was i talking to you? good question right? next time talk to the owner of the vid. i am not trying to convert anybody. if you think he is cool that is fine by me. i really could care less.

  • @911feltner911 you must have missed the entire highpoint series if you think that Barry is stuck up...

  • @IssunQuixotic nope i watched every video on this channel. i watched that entire series. at first i didn't mind him. but when he did the last gun gripe video and the one before about clips/mags his attitude really came out. and it wasn't good. think about it if you were that consumer that brought that messed up 22 in and you happened to see the video that was done behind your back making fun of what you did, how would you feel? i thought that was just unappropriate and snobby.

  • @IssunQuixotic for me it just made me mad. in this profession you should hold yourself to a higher standard than making fun of customers. i get crazy stuff myself in my shop. but i would never make a video about it and have a good laugh at some elses expense. i know i don't know it all and i am humble that way. but i would never make fun of my customer. i would take that time to educate them so that way they don't go and hurt themselves. i would do it with the respect they deserve.

  • @911feltner911 jees, why didnt you post this at first instead of calling him a stuck up snob? you would have come across and much less of a jerk

  • @IssunQuixotic well as you can tell i just suck at typing and i find it hard to convey what i am feeling through text. its not really my strong point. you are right i should have explained my point first and what i really was trying to say. for that i am sorry. but it is what it is i guess. notice iraqveteran didn't ask me to elaborate either. so it just sucks all the way around. i figured he would have at least asked why. so its no biggie but i am just moving on.

  • @911feltner911 Whats wrong with Barry? I like Barry, he's kind of a throw back, adds a lot of character to the channel, not to mention a little humor. Gun snob??? did you see the series they did on the Hi-Point? What is a gun snob anyway? Someone that doesn't like the brand you like.

  • @911feltner911 ..................

  • @911feltner911 Barry is a believer in what's right, not what's easy or popular

  • @911feltner911 lol snob ? i dont think he fits in that slot

  • @911feltner911 You don't even shoot guns on your channel. You just yap like a woman

  • @EliteAmericans actually i do. i have more than one channel. lol.
