Thank you SolidJake for the video, much props. The only thing that Pep Boys recommended to me was not to use carburator fluid since this can ignite. Instead they recommended to use Electric Part Cleaner made by CRC Lectra-Motive which is nonflammable and won't risk ruining the electric components inside the ICV
ICV Cleaned, DIdn't notice a difference while driving. After 96 miles of driving same code comes up again!!!!!!!! Someone please help. I am so sick of this SES light coming on because of this p1093 fault code!!!!! Really sucks when you really like a car but hate driving it with your eyes on the dash waiting for that ses light to pop up.... Please help me!!!!!!
@Cloud2fou5 try replacing the disa valve. I had the codes and thought it was o2 sensor related. changed disa instead and cleared everything up. if its still there change o2 sensor as well.
I have a e46 325Ci and keep getting the P1093 tried cleaning MAF, cleared code and it just keeps coming back...Do you think cleaning my ICV will get rid of the SES fault?
Big help, thank you. I found I could do the job without taking off the plasticx shield that surrounds the brake master cylinder. It saves a little time. The clamps down by the engine block are tough to get at as well. Mark Malatesta E46 Fanatic
Many thanks for this video, I followed all your steps on my sister's E46 320i, it works like a charm now! FYI to others: The last intake pipe doesn't have to come off though, just the part connecting to the IACV. Cheers!
Many thanks for posting this video...I had an idle problem, especially when moving from neutral to reverse (kept stalling) and I followed the process described in the video, found and replaced a split pipe and cleaned out the ICV and hey presto, problem sort car runs like a dream. Plus I can imagine a lot of money has been saved as I was on the verge of taking it to a BMW dealer to rectify.... so many thanks
Fantastic video! You made it look so easy that I did it myself today! The only trouble I ran into was removing that lower boot...that took FOREVER! Other than that, everything else was simple. Thanks again!
Followed these instructions and it worked like a charm. Minor change from the video was I took the top half of the air filter box and left the MAF connected to it and put that aside. the rest was as instructed. Thx SolidJake +1

Are BMWs (E46s) difficult to maintain yourself? Is it expensive and is it true that they have made it that you can only replace parts by using THEIR tools?
Thanks for posting. It took a moment to get the ICV out. Did you reuse the gasket/grommet? I am reading where it indicates to replace gasket/grommet whenever the ICV has been removed/replaced. Thanks!
Hello. That was a great video. Big help to my problem of fluctuating/dropping rpm that I did not resolve after replacing the whole crankase ventillation system. One important tip: After removing the DISA valve, tape up the hole with and, say painter's tape. This is to prevent any foreign object from falling inside the hole. Otherwise, your done for! Imagine a nut or bolt inadvetently falling in! Thnx again.
thanks for the video, you just saved me an arm and a leg, dealer wanted to charge me $650. followed your video and did it myself. i even did my 550i, and 650ci and boy what a difference. thanks again

Thank you Jake! You saved me $500+ I'm sure. My car started doing the die on start-up periodically for indefinite amounts of time and delayed acceleration in general (because the ICV was stuck. Did your project today and it runs awesome now. One thing I'd add is the two clamps holding on the lower boot are a BITCH to get out and frankly impossible (upside down on my ride). I just hack sawed them off (being careful not to cut the rubber). Did the trick. Just have a couple spares on hand :)
Thank you Jake for this posting. I had the infamous "whistling" noise coming from under the hood. It turned out that I had a ripped lower boot like most people with this car. Problem is now fixed. Anyway I thank you, I thank you , I thank you !
Very helpful vid!! My Saturn's been idling extremely high lately and I think that if I can find the icv and clean it, that should fix it.................. It looks like the hard part is gonna be getting the damn thing out!! lol
Kudos to Jake for his video posted to Youtube on removing and replacing the ICV (Idle Control Valve). Mind you, like most of us here I am not a mechanic by any stretch, but Jake's video gave me the confidence to attempt a repair that the dealer wanted $756.00 to do.
Damn what a bitch. I have the M60B40 engine (740iL) and the ICV is right in front. All I have to remove is the intake boot. Literally takes about 2 minutes to get it out.
hey follow the instructions and clean my icv, but car still has a rough idle, infact even worst. 8 beats and thn cuts off. hitting the accelerator its like no gas goin to the engine.i somehow drop the pin that holds the power connector to the maf. do u think thats the problem???any suggestions will help.

Great job! After viewing your videos, I replaced my worn out air intake boot. The boot was a bitch to take out. Is the oil separator (cvv) in that same location? I need to have it replaced and at the same time clean the valve control. Thanks for the videos. Do you still gave your e46?
@JCruzify1 Thanks!! The oil separator is hidden under the intake manifold more towards the front of the car. I did the job and honestly it's not THAT bad. Took me 2hrs and 50 min. (new record? :) )
Yes, I still have my car. She's at 96k right now.
i had a high idle 1400rpm.cleaned the icv, reinstalled it.car idled around 400rpm nearly stalling. remembered theres a philips head screw somewhere on the throtle flipper.readjusted it as it was set acording to my high idle.Car runs at idle 900rpm. i am delighted.thanks for your post man
Just a thought but when I removed my ICV it was quite clean, I installed a new one anyway because I had already bought it, PROBLEM SOLVED! I think that the cleanliness might not be the main problem. I think the electromechanical device inside might wear out or get weak so that people who clean them often don't get the results they hoped for. Just my experience here.
The Signature Motoring performance intake kit is only $170 and adds up to 9HP in the E46 323/325/328 and up to 13.9HP in the 330. That's about $17/per extra HP... A good value for the extra oomph.
what about if the rpm drops down when the car is almost at a complete stop? at the same time when the rpm drops it vibrates the car like crazy. i am guessing my VANOS is fucked up. maybe i should do a VANOS seal job no what you think?
@JackDballa It's possible. Once in a while when I stop and go to reverse my RPM dips to 450 or so and bounces back up. Pretty much everything was changed on my car except the seals.
@JackDballa I had the same problem as you. Put new VANOS seals in. Didn't do a damn thing. I am going to clean my ICV this weekend. I'll let you know if that helps.
bro even though it was dirty inside, it changed absolutely nothing. i did not notice a single change in anything. but i guess its good to know that i got a clean idle valve controller now lol.
@JackDballa It's possible for a dirty ICV for affect the idle of the car, but in your case as with a few other people it didn't do anything, but hey still good to have clean parts on the car.
@JackDballa From what I've seen the majority of people that take it out it has some oil on it. My best guess is that the two hoses from the oil separator that go to the intake manifold are backed up and cause oil build up.
Thanks for the info... My wife has a 2005 hat would not idle as it should... Cleaned the ICV as you have shown and it runs just like new.... You saved me HUNDREDS!!!
Thanks a lot for posting this! I am about to go and do this, and seeing your video will help me a lot. It was actually the first result when doing a Google search for E46 ICV.
i just did mine yesterday it was very helpfull video but i would say all the part you took off was correct and even the cabin filter..it is very help full to have that out of the way..
I just wanted to say thanks for posting this. I just did this fix on my 01 330Ci - Sport Option and you were very good at teaching me had to do it! My car was doing this pretty badly in traffic jams. These cars have a stigma of being impossible to work on and it actually isn't like that at all.
good work pal. i have a 318ci with an N42 engine (2.0litre). when the car is idelling, it sometimes goes down likes gonna stall. where i have to hold the acc. pedel for like 2 seconds before it resonds, then the engine would be fine again. I cleaned the control valve already and i made sure the oil is all correct. the car is also service. if you could help that would be great, cheers soildjake...ps i wish i was where you are (all nice and sunny), i live in london where its always raining.
i have a problem with my idle on e36 m42b18, i cleaned the ICV but i still have the same problem, didn't check the O2 sensor yet, how does a bad ICV look like? any idea or photos or something that might help?
Awesome Video... Too bad I got suck in part at 2:50 and I could not go any further. cleaned whatever I was able to get out... I wanted to do this sooo bad.
yea, my friend had the same problem. Just make sure to loosen even single hose clamp that you see and it will come out. Use some brute for if you have to :) I also recommend just getting a new lower intake anyways. It's about $20-30
great video. do you know if carbon buildup in the ICV, DISA, and MAF would cause the car not to start? I was told it may but there would have to be a LOT of carbon no?
Great video! Your videos are very helpful. I'm trying to clean my ICV and I'm having trouble getting to the 2 hose clamps on the lower boot. It's near impossible getting a flat head screw driver and or a socket. Any advice?
Great vid, very professional. Quick one though - when you took your ICV out, was it slightly open? Did you try moving it to fully closed or fully open? If so, was it easy to move? Mine is out, & moveable, just wondering if that's normal? Thanks bud :-)
Thanks, when I took mine out it did not move freely. A few minutes of brake parts cleaner spraying and it was moving extremely easy, the way it's supposed to.
thanks. well, i drove the car around and it seems to respond better, but that might not be affected due to the ICV, but I'd clean it anyways because it was filthy and stuck inside
thanks for the vid bro.
I just fixed mit e85 z4 3.0i. it runs like it hasn't in some time :)
Perfect guide. it only took an hour to perform.
Great work

great video. do you know if carbon buildup in the ICV, DISA, and MAF would cause the car not to start? I was told it may but there would have to be a LOT of carbon no?

@logikphryk
Doubt it. Probably a battery issue

A few minutes of brake parts cleaner spraying and it was moving extremely easy, the way it's supposed to.

what did you use to clean it? spray brake cleaner?
ricardo11321 2 years ago
CRC brake parts cleaner, the green can.
Just make sure the part is dried out well

Thanks! The E46's are easy cars to work on and it's not that hard to work on. I'm an aircraft mechanic.

heeey is it possible to put a turbo on a bmw ? like I have a 320i .
and I found a greddy turbo(just the tubro no headers )
how would I put this in ?
can you help me thx ^^

Turbo's for E46's are custom and cost about $7000 parts alone to do it right. I highly doubt it will work.

Cool video. Did it make any noticeable difference? I miss working on my car... nothing needs mx right now.

thanks. well, i drove the car around and it seems to respond better, but that might not be affected due to the ICV, but I'd clean it anyways because it was filthy and stuck inside
