  • hello mick ! thanks for BT and tutorial! i's t fantastic!

  • @ninomatias

Thx! But it's Mike. Mick is more talented than me. ;-)

  • @U2GuitarTutorials Ok. Lots of thanks to you for this info!

I'm sorry that I ask you a lot of questions, I won't waste your time anymore :)

    Thanks for patience!

  • @Rafal102able

No need to apologize. It's just more efficient to post on the Google group so others can help you in case I can't get to it or don't know the answer.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials Hi Michael

Do you know in which position The Edge plays Sunday Bloody Sunday on his black strat ( bridge or bridge + middle pup) ?

  • @Rafal102able

I take that back. I found out it's bridge position, not quack. Sorry. This makes sense because he plays it on bridge position on the telecaster.

  • I have listened to this song a million times since it came out in 1983.....I know every note and word by heart....I hear it in my sleep sometimes.....It takes me to another place....A happy place......You did the same thing with that guitar cover......You got it man....You got it!!!!

  • great cover man!

  • great cover man ;-)

  • you nailed this one!!! Great, great job

  • I love your playing this song, I hope to achieve 40% play this song like you and I'll be happy.

    ;) thank for posting!

  • in the first part of this video, it would be possible to put subtitles in Spanish?

    please please please!!!!!!

  • Thanks to post this. Awesome.

    Thumbs up!

  • simply fantastic !!!!

  • Great job with nailing the tone ....

  • @areripe:

I did have it installed on this guitar way back then, but it was not used in this cover. Guitar was set to bridge position for NYD. I now have a Fernandez sustainer built into this guitar.

  • Awesome mate

  • Covers don't get any better than this.

  • very cool, bru!

  • Luv It, Awesome sound

  • excelenteeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

  • what type of effects are you using?

  • @flyingmonkey96:

See the other parts of the tutorial (especially Part 1). I go through them. Everything on this cover was done with Fractal Audio's Axe-Fx Ultra.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials by the way awsome cover

  • great tut...and even better playing!

  • Come on Dave, put your beanie back on and grow your beard back. We know it's you really!!!!

That is some seriously nice playing! *Envy* ;-D

  • @christhesnaildriver Dave wouldn't use a Fractal Axe-FX. He's way too attached to his rig.

  • @muymalmoon:

Never know. Edge would not use the amp modeling, but he does use Line6 and other digital effects. Maybe someday he will use the Axe.

  • Very nice! You definitely have the edge tone/playing down pat.

  • excellente! veryyy great cover ;)

  • hey! how did you get that sound with the strat? Are you using a computer or a pedal and an amp? Sounds like Edge´s Strat.

  • @gitolucero :

I modeled everything with Fractal Audio's Axe-Fx Ultra. The best digital effects processor on the market in my humble opinion. Thx!

  • @U2GuitarTutorials The only problem with the Axe-FX is that isn't powered by tubes.

  • @muymalmoon :

You don't have to use the amp models in the Axe-Fx. Just use it as an effect processor in front of a tube amp. You will get amazing tone.

  • @gitolucero The Edge day wasn't doing a lot with signal processing in the early 80s so you could get the same sound with a Vox AC30 and TC Electronic 2290. Thats all Dave used for this song.

  • Great job!

The tone and delay are spot on, as is the playing.

    Thumbs up!

  • Wow that EQ really does make a big difference! :)

  • mate, what amp you running?

  • Hi. No amp. This was all Fractal Audio Axe-Fx Ultra with amp model and cab.

  • wow that was excellent! and nice guitar! im looking for a black strat

  • damn , that's a tutorial! nice

  • good job there mate, but looks like you are hypo ventilating lol

  • that kicked ass bro... helluva job on a great song

  • That concert is at Slane castle (Ireland)

  • WOOOOOO! you rock! it's perfect like all your vids. Thanks a lot for all your amazing job, as U2 contributor !

    Peace from France :)))

  • excelente,un 10 para ti,10 for you you touch incredible

  • hey excelente can you share me the tab hahahaha

    pls xD

  • See other parts (3, etc.) for detailed tutorial. ;-)

  • Ok, thanks for your answer. Anyway English is not my fist language, maybe that's why my coment seems unkind. I never sad you tuto was bad, i think it is really good.

    Greatings.

PD: The question i did was about that it's really dificult to change tuning on guitars whit ployd rose trmolo, i think it would be a good idea to record this tutorial in 440 hertz ; )

  • Ok, got it, thx. Are you asking me to record it again in normal tuning? Please don't take it personally, but I have too much to do on other tutorials. The backtrack was in Eb, so I could not use normal tuning (E). Do you have another guitar you can tune down?

  • HI! THE EDGE HAS A PARTICULAR "DRY" SOUND THAT YOU GOT TO REPRODUCE HERE. i DON'T GET IT EVEN TRYING HARD. WHAT'S THE SECRET? I HAVE A STRAT, SOME BOUTIQUE PEDALS AND A MESA BOOGIE NOMAD BUT MY GUITAR ALWAYS SOUNDS MORE BRIGHTER THAN YOURS. IS THIS A HUMBOCKER SOUND?

  • Good and tough question. I was going after the Slane tone. Edge used a Gibson LP which is obviously a humbucker. But Edge used a Strat many years ago for this song (see old U2 vids on YouTube). I kept the volume way up on the bridge only. I also added paraEQ to give it more mids for a humbucker sound (you could use a hotter bridge single coil also). Finally, I used the SD-1 drive model with strong 1/4 note modulated delay into the AC-30 amp model on the Axe-Fx. AC-30 is key to Edge tone.

  • Yes, ac-30. but you told me about the mids. and I increased them here on my mesa boogie. mesa has lots of mids, so, I was cutting them on my clean sound. and I modified my settings on my bb preamp: less treble and more bass. My strat has a jb jr. at the bridge . with these mods I got sometinhg similar. This trick of the increased mids was the key for my setup, i think thank you very much. God bless you.

  • Either your neighbor has a laser sighted rifle pointed at your scratch plate to shoot you (do you play too loud) or I can see the reflection of the red record light on the camera. I think I prefer my Bourne Identity style explanation! Great version Michael. Makes me want to play this song now!!!

  • Good eye! Never noticed that. I think that's a red LED or other light from my rack to my right. Also the TC2290 LEDs come up a couple times.

  • Honest Straight Forward And No BS!! Love the lesson.I always had trouble with that I will be wit you again guitar part! I thought edge took it down 4 steps.Thanx

  • no veo tu mano derecha,,,jj

  • Hey man you just inspired me to try to get this song going again! Hope this time with this video I'll get closer to it. My favourite U2 song ever so cheers, great video.

I'll be a happy chap if I get this one and Pink floyd's Coming back to life close enough... greetings from Costa Rica!

  • Thx! Note there is a serious of videos that make up the tutorial.

  • do you live near milwaukee? i'd love to sing this with you playing.

  • Nice of you to offer, thx! But I'm in NYC.

  • Hey man I love your cover!

I've got the basis of the song down like the verse and solo down but its just the little stuff im trying to get down haha...

I was wondering if you could tell me how to do the Slide at 1:57, i think i heard ppl saying its harmonics but how do you do that haha...

    help greatly appreciated haha

  • It takes a certain touch. Hard to explain. It's a harmonic, but it's also the Herdim pick giving some "bite" to it. I hold the Herdim slightly angled to make it easier to cut across the string quickly and I'm lightly touching just the G string like a harmonic, and sliding down. You have to be able to play simple harmonics well first. You also need that sustain to bring out the song. See one of the other tutorials in this series.

  • do you tune the guitar differently?

  • Yes, Eb. U2 tunes down many songs often. The backtrack used was based on the Slane version which U2 played tuned down 1/2 step.

  • This was awsome!!! You played it perfect. Thanks for the lesson. Cheers from Spain.

  • Fantastic! I didnt realise that the guitar solo was mostly done on harmonics.

  • The lead solo is not harmonics. But many of the intro notes are harmonics and the slide down the strings is also.

    Michael

  • I've watched it again and can see that now. I think it was late at night and I hadnt realised that they werent all the right fret positions for harmonics. (Can you believe Ive been playing 25 years? lol)

  • If you've been playing 25 years, you must be great. Not all my videos are that good, but NYD and ISHFWILF came out great. You have no idea how inexperienced I really am. I don't read music and don't know my scales! I just focus and work hard on U2 songs. Thx!

  • Then you must just have natural genius!

Scales are boring but worth the effort.

  • Nope. Practice, practice, practice. Repition and determination. I do have decent technique, but I'm horrible at lead guitar. I can find a note and have decent right hand rhythm. But can't improvise for my life. That's why I like Edge's approach so much. It fits my style.

  • Yes it is only really practice, that's what I tell everyone who says that can't learn to play the guitar. However, when I started playing there was no internet, let alone U Tube. I would have loved to have had all this help available in the mid eighties.

  • wow bro your great, amazing sound

  • Nice! Thank you very much!

  • Thank you very much. Your lesson training daily.

  • My friend..

I have a gt-10 from Boss, know it very well, but settings in the style of u2?

    no can-do :(

    You suggest me something? ;)

  • If you are asking about NYD, then all you need is a quarter note, modulated delay, Boss SD-1 drive or similar, AC-30 and Les Paul (like in Slane) or Strat (older versions). You want a lot of full, smooth, drive and a pretty loud delay with at least 4 or 5 repeats. I use Fractal Audio's Axe-Fx Ultra for most of my covers.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials

    I have a boss gt-10..

And how many ms is the delay for NYD?

If you know the "GT-10", maybe you can give me some information especially for the GT10?

    Tnx mate..

  • I'm not in front of my gear, but I know I provide this info in one of the tutorials. I think I go through it in Part 1.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials

    Tnx Maestro =)

  • I understand how to play this and etc, but do I need to tune down the guitar at all? Sounds right even at eadgbe.

How to get the clean sound though? Mine starts growling if I use too much distortion and if there's not enough - no power in sound.

  • I was tuned one half step down here to Eb. I spent a lot of time experimenting with the many parameters on the Axe-Fx. I used the SD-1 drive model. Try different distortion and volume levels. Or try different drive pedals. It will likely depend on the rest of your equipment. If you have an Axe-Fx, I believe my preset is in the file secion of the U2_Guitar_Tutorial Yahoo forum.

  • Great sound, great playing. Well done.

  • Wow . You spared me a lot of painful and long listening. Ii like this song and Ihave to learn it for my cover band. Simpler than I thought. .Tthanks

  • Great, really great ! Do you have un idee where we can find a good tab for this song ?

  • See my channel U2GuitarTutorials. I have playlists of the tutorial videos. This part 2 is from a series of videos that show you how to play every note. See Part 1 and the other parts. You might not need the tabs.

  • so i will do that to learn with your videos! Thanks, it's seems to be very clear

    IIIIIIIIIII will begin agaiiiin....

  • Hey I have the same Fender Strat but unfortunately that is where the comparision ends, Nice Job. One can only aspire.

  • awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I recall explaining the effects in the other tutorials. Try Part 1 and 3. I used a paraEQ into SD-1 drive model into 1/4 note modulated delay. This was all Axe-Fx Ultra (amp and cab models). I did not have my AC-30 at the time.

  • Excelent. Better than Edge.

Which is the effect that you used.

    From Chile

  • Thx! I explain the signal path in Part 1 if I recall correctly. It'a bridge pup on the Strat --> AxeFx --> dynaudio monitors --> MXL 990 USB stereo microphone.

Within the Axe-Fx the path is: ParaEQ --> SD-1 drive model --> Top Boost AC-30 amp model --> 2x12 Brit Cab model --> Delay (modulated at 441ms which is a 1/4 note delay) --> Reverb.

  • tabs plz

  • I have not tabbed this song, sorry. See the rest of the video tutorials. Tabs take a long time to produce. I prefer to spend the time on the videos. My goal is to make the video as clear as tabs. I will try to be more careful and slow down the tutorials and make the video as clear as possible.

  • exelente. te pasaste eres muy bueno. Me dejaste pasmado y muy emocionado. Suerte, espero que sigas asi. abrazos

  • Class A++++

  • Michael,

Most excellent YouTube site. You call yourself intermediate? Brah, you're a humble dude. Keep posting braddah Mike - your vids are truly helpful to beginners like me. Aloha!

    Oz

  • Excellent job!!

  • Wow, thanks ScalerWave! More to come...

  • Hey Mike, i'm really looking forward to the new "magnificent" video...thanks again, you're an awesome player and teacher!!!!!!

  • DAAAMMMNN!!! That was AWESOME!!! You make it look so easy. Great job!!

  • This is one of the best videos I have seen on youtube. You really nailed it. Awesome!

  • Michael, you did an excellent job in walking us through this song. I mean, i had to abandon playing this song because I couldn't find a single tutorial on U2 songs, or even New Years Day, for my life. Not only you provided the dead on guitar visual, you gave amp setting and playing techniques too. I really appreciate these videos of yours and encourage your tutorials of any song that you come across because it will be immensely helpful.

  • I'm incredibly humbled by these kind words. Thank you so much! This motivates me even more. I had surgery on my wrist and will be able to start playing guitar again this weekend. It will take time for me to get my strength back. Much more to come. Thanks for the support and pass the word on about this YouTube channel.

  • Wonderful job,really amazing!

  • 5 stars Michael, what pick ups do you uses?

  • Hey,

best cover of it on Youtube in my opinion =)

Great Tutorials, great guitar player, keep on !

    5*

    Sincerely,

    Luke

  • Thanks Luke. I watched your BDay video and it was also very good. What was your distortion on the chorus? It sounded like the studio version. I liked it!

    Michael

  • I always look forward to your videos, another 5 star effort! Thanx!

  • Thx Racer! More to come. I intend to do a tutorial for every song I learn. I need more time!

  • REMEMBER to add "&fmt=18" at the end of the URL for high quality video and audio. If you have your YouTube account set to receive high quality video at all times, you still will not get stereo audio unless you add "&fmt=18" at the end of the video's URL.

  • Wow, thx everyone. Motivates me to keep this going. I was always frustrated with many videos on youtube by very talented people, but I couldn't figure out exactly what was being played. I intend to make it easy for everyone interested in the Edge/U2.

  • SIMPLY AWESOME! :-)

  • I urge anyone wanting to have ago at these songs to have a look at Michael's site on utube for a really good explanation of the Edge's technique.

Hey Michael, any plans on touring England!!!

    Pete
