The arrangement that Bunk is playing(and it was an arrangement ) was by W S Mygrant who was a cornet soloist in the the late 19th- 20th century.I know this because the group I play with has just recorded the original arrangement which was available to everybody at the time at music stores everywhere in the United States(or what used to pass as the United States ).Everything Bunk is playing is in the historic arrangement.Sorry Bill Russell.
All I wanted to say was:- to European ears it is very odd to hear an anthem used by the left i.e. The Red Flag with emotive words "our flag of deepest red dyed by workers blood" etc etc played at a sports event especially in the USA. and thats all.
This tune seems to be very similar, but not exactly the same of "Red flag". Here in Europe we have another theme called "O mein tannenbaum", which is asolutely the same and one as Maryland my Maryland; both are quite sounding as a military march. I heard calling it "La Svizzera" (The Switzerland") here, in Italy: It could be confirm a teutonic origin. Anyway this song is delightful and I enjoy a lot when I play it in "New Orleans Revival" Style. :o)
The full band is: Bunk Johnson tp, Jim Robinson tb, George Lewis cl, Alton Purnell p, Lawrence Marrero bj, Slow Drag b, Baby Dodds d. Recorded 21. Nov. 1945
Cool 5 stars! Does anyone know why Maryland my Maryland was written? The Tyrants it refers to are the Yankees that entered the state that forced it back into the Union.
@MoleDFigg Hi Clive, I don't speak Dutch but it's so close to German and English, "onvergetelijk" must mean UNFORGETTABLY but "mooi" is out of reach to me.
This was one of the earliest records I ever bought and I still love it now as much as I did then ... but does this mean that there are no extant clips of Bunk? If you dedicated researchers have finally come up with a clip of Bix, surely Bunk is not beyond the bounds of possibility ... ?
Clive, gratulations with your Bunk contribution. Quality is just fine. I know unfortunatelyt here is no film clip of this. That would be an absolute winner. The comments on the right make for interesting reading and put you ahead of others who do not comment or have only record data. Keep 'em coming!
I love it too. One of Bunk's best.
Thanks for posting it.

The main theme is also a famous socialist anthem The Red Flag. I used to play it endlessly as a lad as it infuriated by mother's conservative fella.

corksand this song is older then socialist or communist. This song came around the civl war era, communist.

Don't get me wrong I have a Trad Jazz collection to die for. Perhaps its only in the UK that the chorus has associations with the far left.
