What appears to be happening here is that when you heat graphite you get carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide gases. These gases are driving the piston as they form from the heated graphite. Eventually the graphite will have expended the gas available and the machine will stop.

Once the rotation frequency of those circles in the wheel surpasses the camera's FPS (frames per second or pictures per second) it looks like the wheel is rotating in oposite direction to what it started. for example if you have a wheel with spokes rotating in such speed that it's rotating spokes frequency is of 60Hz and he camera you're using films at 60 FPS you'll see the wheel stopped when you play back the video...
