So Ive been trying to hook a sturgeon forever.. went to the forks a while ago to check it out and it was running reallyfast. where exactly do you fish for them there? The island looked good but I didnt have a boat and I wasnt about to swim across that bitch with my fishing stuff.
That was the best year ever since I been fishing there. There was a Flash Flood in Lethbridge. The Old Man was murky from all the Run-off. Everyone down there fishing was hooking into Sturg non-stop!
i live about 20 mins from the forks!! cant beleive i found a video of it :) a couple wknds ago i caught one and it was 44 inches and last wknd my cousin caught one that was 49 inches and its girth was 17.5 inches man it was a pig!! thanx for posting this video man!!
Awesome fish! I envy you. That area has one heck of a Fishery and scenery alone is worth the trip. I'll be heading down in a couple of weeks for my annual trip there with some buds. This time I be filming some action sequences and post.
yeah thanx man!! in the past few weeks there have been some 60 plus pounders comin out of the forks!! cool shit, maybee ill see you guys down there then...cheers!!
Thanks for the info, I hadn't even read the regs because I assumed there was a ban on even fishing them. Where else can you fish sturgeon in AB (if you don't mind sharing...It'll save me a few hours of research time).
The majority of Sturg come from 2 primary Water systems that stem from Saskatchewan. One being the North Sask River and the other, South Sask.
North coming out of Tobin and South from Dief. Haven't researched much into the North but the South is forked by the Red Deer river by the border. I've caught Sturg also in the Red during Spring Run-off.
They migrate up during run-off and the Oldman Dam, Bassano Dam, and Dickson Dam are as far as they can go before they head back down to Sask.
Ban is not for fishing for them just retention. Not familar with Sask Regs but if there is a O limit, it'll be the same, C&R. I'm trying to arrange to get the Regional Biologist to meet up there to do some Sturgeon tagging.
About the best was in the high 30's. Although we did have a scale there, did not want to stress anymore than necessary. TAke a couple pics and get them back into the water
Unfortunately did not have a good Camcorder until the Lower Bow trip. There's always next year as it's just a span of 2-3 weeks when they're in the full run.
One day I'll make it out to the mighty Fraser and do a Vid there. Just heard recently that someone landed one over 300 kgs there !!!
We used primarily Salted Minnows and Worms when it got kinda slow. Once it got slow with Worms, we switched back. The water was so murky that the Sturgeon were biting all day long and into the evening. We fished one nite until 3am and still getting fish. We gave up to get "some" rest and started fishing again at 6am. It was 3 days of hardcore Angling! LOL
If you use HOTRODS beef jerky they won`t stay off salty and has oils .

@MrMrtiki Will have to give that a try this year. Best thing about that bait is that if fishing is slow and you get hungry..LOL Thanks for the tip

I thought there was a ban on both fishing for (and keeping obviously) sturgeon in Alberta + Sask? No?

Is it a heavily fished spot or is remote? Would I be able to find it if I was ever visiting the area?
