I have grown up with guns all my life, professional shooting, and i will tell you, a .22 caliber round, is MORE deadly at times than say a 5.56 Nato, 9mm, .40 ect, because a larger round, with a higher grain, will blow a chunk of you off, but a .22LR hasn't the power to penetrate

hunting rounds exist because 99% of hunters are not good enough shots to place a bullet in the area required for a reliable kill. You can kill anything with a .22 if you hit it in the right place. Jugular vein, brain, heart and lungs are all places where a .22 calibre bullet would easily kill something.

If you think killing something is about exceeding some "damage threshold" rather than placing a bullet in the right spot then you play too many video games. Large bullets are large in order to increase the chance that the wound channel overlaps something vital. It also makes the target bleed out quicker. If you don't hit anything vital, than yes, you do need a large wound channel in order to insure a kill, but if you hit something vital you do not. Get off COD and learn something about firearms.

i would prefer a .22 in the leg which get's stuck in tissue then a .50cal which goes through and does so much damage at the exit wound.

well at the shooting range where im active there is a guy whom got shot last year in his lower belly ( just 10cm above his dick :P ) it went clean true and lodged in his spine..
didnt bounce around, just stuck in there.. was removed afterwards...
When we shoot bunnies or other small vermits with .22lr.. normally a clean shot..

@jewsalot Not everyone is stupid but many people are, and mistakes do happen, you clearly have no training in weaponry, and wouldnt know that even trained soldiers have made mistakes that cause death "BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT IT WAS EMPTY" sometimes knowing its empty can just be you believing its empty or thinking it is, when its not, also it doesnt take much to set of a round, heat ooor a pin that there is a weapon, with a live round that fits it will go off, or create a breach explosion.

@lb8068 Yes you can kill a deer with a .22, has been done many times. Not from a zip gun though, from a rifle. Reason we use large caliber and lots of powder? Cause the head is small and the body is big and there are too many variables to rely on .22 to put food on the table. The deer "might" die from a chest shot with a .22 but it might take days and you would never find it.. Not ethical at all.

@lb8068 a .22lr bullet could definitely kill a 600 lb animal. All it takes is piercing the skull, or making it to the heart or lungs.
hunting rounds exist because 99% of hunters are not good enough shots to place a bullet in the area required for a reliable kill. You can kill anything with a .22 if you hit it in the right place. Jugular vein, brain, heart and lungs are all places where a .22 calibre bullet would easily kill something.

If you think killing something is about exceeding some "damage threshold" rather than placing a bullet in the right spot then you play too many video games. Large bullets are large in order to increase the chance that the wound channel overlaps something vital. It also makes the target bleed out quicker. If you don't hit anything vital, than yes, you do need a large wound channel in order to insure a kill, but if you hit something vital you do not. Get off COD and learn something about firearms.

There are about 5 firearms (M4, M9, M249, M240B M2) that your average person would operate in the military, and none of them require any special training to operate.

@maincourseistoocool during several engagements in the past US Special Forces teams have been known to use Ruger 10/22 and 45/22 rifles and pistols, and versions of those weapons exist which are integrally silenced because of this. Both of those weapons are .22s, and both of them have been used to kill quite a few people. It is estimated that the .22lr calibre round is responsible for more animal kills than any other hunting round, due to it being a popular poaching cartridge.
